Happy Independence Day to my southern neighbours (deliberate spelling!). As a British and Canadian citizen today is just another work day for me but I do enjoy the reduction in email and conference calls on this day so I’m delighted you are celebrating your Independence.

Reflecting on this holiday, beyond the barbecues, hot-dog eating contests and fireworks displays, I’m proud to be an American and happy to live in what I believe is still (after 240 years of existence) the best country in the world. I have visited nearly 60 countries – and for the most part have enjoyed my travels but I am always happy to come home. So, today I reflect upon the wisdom, sacrifices and fortitude of our founding fathers who established this nation as an experiment in democracy. Reflecting that we celebrate this secular holiday as we each see fit, I am also appreciative of all those who have sacrificed, often with their lives, to preserve and protect our freedoms. To all those who have contributed to, and continue to work to perfect our democracy and make it better for all those living here, I also give my thanks.
