Hilti ProKit – a New Modular Tool Box System

Hilti ProKit Tool Box System Rolling Stack

Hilti has announced a new modular tool box system that will launch globally towards the end of 2025.

Posts on social media by a Hilti North America sales manager strongly suggests that the new tool box system will also be available in the USA and Canada.

Hilti ProKit will launch with 6 SKUs:

  • Trolley – a rolling hand cart
  • XL Box – the base for the trolley
  • L-Box – large tool box
  • M-Box – medium box
  • Assortment Box – clear lid organizer
  • Tool Bag

That the trolley rolling hand cart can be removed from the XL tool box base unit presents some interesting opportunities for future expansion.

Hilti ProKit Stacking Tool Boxes

It’s not immediately clear how the Hilti ProKit tool boxes latch together.

There are large pockets at the front of the bigger tool boxes, with no clarity as to its functionality.

Hilti ProKit Tool Box Working Height

With how the ProKit rolling cart is designed, you can attach a smaller tool box above the base unit for a “mobile workstation.” Not only does this give you a light duty working height surface, it presumably improves access for tools or supplies stored in the base unit.

Hilti ProKit Tool Box Interior Organization

The large box features a removable divider. Hilti says this size fits “all core devices in one box.”

Hilti ProKit Parts Organizer

Here’s a look at the Hilti ProKit parts organizer. At this time, only one size has been announced – this one is a deep box with 11 removable bins that can hold masonry screws, anchors, and other such things.

Hilti ProKit 2025 Launch Lineup with Tool Boxes Organizer and Tool Bag

The tool bag will feature 37 compartments.

Hilti says that their ProKit tool boxes will be field-repairable with replacement parts such as wheels, fasteners, and connectors.

The Hilti ProKit tool box tagline seems to be “Pack it. Stack it. Track it,” with mentions that the boxes will be trackable presumably with additional products or services. Or you can use an Apple AirTag as a lot of folks have been doing with Milwaukee Packout, Dewalt ToughSystem, and other existing tool box systems.

USA Pricing: TBA
Global Launch: October 2025

First Impressions

As expected for a new entry into a now-mature market, it looks like Hilti’s ProKit storage system designers applied some lessons learned from other tool box brands.

For example Ridgid was first to launch interchangeable base unit tool boxes that can attach to a removable rolling cart.

What does Hilti ProKit do differently from other brands? What are they doing that’s new? That part hasn’t been made very clear, but I expect to see more over time.

All of Hilti’s product imagery show workers in hard hats. Tajima’s system – see Here’s How Tajima Tackles Modular Tool Storage and Organization – features ways to secure safety harnesses and hard hats. Where does a worker stow their PPE on the Hilti ProKit tool box system?

Hilti ProKit Tool Box System 2025

Will there be integration with the Hilti Nuron cordless power tool system? Maybe a ProKit vacuum? What about worklights? A portable multi-battery charging solution?

What about Hilti drawer tool boxes? Work van racking?

Hilti is not a consumer brand. They have shown increased interest in the needs and wants of individual tool users, although they seem to remain focused on fleet users and commercial buyers.

Does the Hilti ProKit tool box system solve unmet needs? Does it eliminate any pain points in better ways than other brands’ more mature modular tool box systems? I think – or at least hope – it could if we give them time.

I know that many of you will have a “that’s it??” reaction to what you see here, and if I’m being honest I share that sentiment. But, every new modular tool box system needs to start somewhere. 3 tool box sizes, 1 mobility option, 1 tool bag, and 1 organizer seems like a fairly standard launch package.

Hopefully the second wave of products will include ProKit drawers and a battery charger or vacuum. What would be on your Hilti tool box wishlist?

Do you think that Hilti ProKit can take on Milwaukee Packout, Dewalt ToughSystem, and other well-established modular tool box systems? What might Hilti do better, now or in the future?

One more big question – will there be tool-customized inserts for the ProKit tool boxes? In other words, if you’re buying a Hilti Nuron cordless impact wrench, rotary hammer, and fastener kit, can you get everything shipped to you inside or at least with fitted these tool boxes? I think that would fit right in with Hilti’s sales and distribution business model.

Thank you to Joe for the heads-up!

Looks like you can mount a smaller box on the handle of the cart without attaching to the box below.

Yes. I noticed that too. This is a huge improvement and has been missing from other brand. Hanging, beside stacking, to wall or to other boxes w/o additional attachment is what I have been wishing for.

I’ve heard the its Black Packout because Hilti reasoning too but apparently this is not the case. I wish I could remember where I saw it and give you the source material but I would have to try and look it up.

          They’re wrong, I’m not.

Milwaukee Packout tool boxes in Europe are black and not red because they have “an agreement with another tool brand” where they said they won’t come out with red tool boxes. Hilti is most likely that other tool brand. Hilti does have some trademarks and trade dress protections for red tool cases.

I’ve seen YouTubers and influencers try to guess as to what the real reason is, but they’re just guessing. I’m not guessing. I asked Milwaukee managers about this face-to-face in either 2018 or 2019. I couldn’t find my notes, but I did find an email with reader/commentor Jim Felt going back to March 2020.

I doubt they’re worried to much about taking on the other options out there. The vast majority of these boxes are going to get sold/leased to their big customers as part of the package they get.

Another quarter, another modular toolbox system.

Stuart, It would be interesting to see a status/deathwatch of all the systems. Looks like Masterforce is in the way out, kobalt case stack accessories have been unavailable for months, Flex is hit or miss on availability, craftsman trade stack is fading, Klein has a lawsuit against jt, and both Makita and Hilti are on the way in. Stachtedh? Ridgid? Both DeWalt systems? Husky? Bauer? Plus any other coming soon systems

Which modular system should I (continue to) invest in?

These are generic enough that if your a DeWalt person it does not matter if you use Milwaukee, Ryobi, Stacktech etc. But what matters is it a system is on deathwatch then investing (more) into it is not a great idea.

For example, the Container Store’s Tactic line is gone but I think that is still compatible with Bauer and Masterforce.

For professional use? Milwaukee Packout. For DIY or light user demands? Take your pick. It has become clear over time as to which brands are investing in continued development, and which are not, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the stagnant lines aren’t worth buying.

Would be cool if the rolling cart pulled away from the tool boxes and folded into a table or work platform that you could stand on. When you want to move the work platform from one spot to another, you pull up on one handle lifting one end and at that angle the wheels touch the ground and you can roll it along the ground to the next spot. If a tool bag can hang off the side of the cart/work platform while in that configuration too then that’s a bonus.

I’ve worked for a construction company that had a multi-national presence. And everything was always Hilti. The Hilti plastic tool storage boxes would all be stacked up in the corner of a room. Huge stacks, sometimes, because of the scope of the project. Those boxes that Hilti’s tools came in, weren’t flat sided. So they couldn’t be nestled into each other. It was more of a balancing act.
So if Hilti decided to revamp their storage boxes, I can see them deciding to take it a step farther. It will be interesting to see how these boxes would be incorporated into the cordless tool purchases themselves. Will these boxes always be a stand alone product, & will Hilti still have their curvy sided boxes also?

I like Hilti. They do things differently. Because of different user atmospheres and different expectations of the tools themselves. I’m sure this product lineup will be well thought out. I think the way the wheeled trolley can be moved between different stacks is brilliant. But I don’t think I’ll see too many opportunities to witness the use of this modular box system out in the wild. In North Dakota, the Milwaukee Packout system has a very strong presence. Many hardware and farm supply stores have steady Packout products on display.

In this particular case, I don’t think Hilti’s modular boxes are entering an already overcrowded and saturated market. Hilti knows who their customers are. These boxes aren’t intended for me, my neighbor, and the local plumber/electrician. I think they will be more for customers that have already bought into Hilti. Although I am looking forward to seeing this new modular box system, in the local Acme Tools store, if they get them in. You never know… maybe I’ll decide I’m ready for that trolley that can be moved from stack to stack.

Id hope for the cost of the tools they could use boxes like these rather than the plastic cases they use at this time. They could charge a bit more ,and the customers would be more likely to buy in if the tools they buy fit the stack. They could still sell the XL rolling carts and other sizes, add in a drawer system and a couple of different sizes for parts, screws and bolts. They focus on concrete work mostly,so maybe they could make it so the larger jackhammer’s will lock into the system as well. So they could just remove the trolley from a stack to move the jackhammer around, though its been awhile and the jackhammers might have their own carts, these could be an improvement, especiallyif they find a way to lock it in and remove in seconds. They could even sell the trolley separately, because large worksites would require more than one or two trolleys. Oh add a vacuum, a radio (every company needs a radio apparently), and whatever else thst could stack and they’d be set. The guy mentions a work table. Not sure how it would work but if they sold a table top that locked onto the two trolleys that are fully loaded and facing out, you’d have a table with tools at two full carts of tools available. They might focus on concrete but contractors have a wide range of skills so even if it might not fit into the concrete business model it would still fit in with alot of contractors, general contractors specifically.I dont see Hilti failing globally, but here in the states they have dewalt and milwaukee specifically as competition and they have a solid headstart, though this is a great start for hilti and im sure they have more in the works. I hope these are durable like dewalts tough system and similar pricing. Knowing hilti the prices will be a bit higher than what’s out there. That might make most of us hesitate, but they have a customer base that will definitely buy these. So i dont see these being sold at a Lowe’s nor do I see them failing, Hiltis in a different league. Like Metabo used to be for steelwork, seems like they took a step back after Hitachi took over.

I’m going to make a friendly wager that these will be vastly more expensive than any of the others, including the “other” red ones.
That in itself be the reason this will not be widely accepted, other than to Hilti users. And I’m guessing market share will be 1-2%, if that.
    Just saying.
Too many options in a way oversaturated market.
Home Depot allows most people easiest access to the market leader in traveling cases/storage….enough said.

I was quite honestly shocked by their move, but I actually like it. The removable trolley is a unique feature and I like the single handed latch system.

The Hilti reps have confirmed that there will be drawers and a vacuum among others.

I think Stuart hit it on the money that if these come with custom inserts, this could be game changer. They always make quality things so I think this will be no different, but I hope the prices are not absolutely outrageous.

At first glance at this (understandably) limited selection, it looked too much like Milwaukee to get excited.
But having tromped around muddy and concrete infested construction sites, that “attach a smaller tool box above the base unit for a “mobile workstation.” is brilliantly simple, at least to my knowledge.
We were always hurting for a clean, flat surface to lay engineering drawings and other paperwork on. This would be such a big help.
I wonder if Hilti will do the fleet leasing program for this modular storage. Not sure if the modules will get so beat up they deprecate too much.

I found out (just a little) more about this system here on YouTube:
    https://youtu.be/c9hxMcAjHi0?si=CAjY5MnNVBI5m7kx

If the link fails, search “HILTI are FINALLY Joining the Modular Toolbox Game!” on the Tube.

I still can’t make up my mind what to think of it. I think it’s not for me (but then, I don’t get on well with the Packouts that I have), but I suspect there are some people that might really like this. Ultimately, I think it probably better to appeal a LOT to 5% of the people than have 95% of people think it’s OK.
