Today’s Home Depot tool deals of the day, featuring Dewalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi, and other brands, are so good that they’re beating the retailer’s own Black Friday deals.
Or, at least some of them are. Some of these deals are the best one could hope to see on Black Friday, others are active Holiday deals center promos with additional discounts applied, saving you more.
Not all of the deals are fantastic, however. For example, they have the Milwaukee M12 5pc tool kit – a special buy for $199 right now – plus a bonus battery for $249. Frankly, I think most people would be better off with the regular deal, rather than the special bundle.

Luckily, the majority of the deals are really good, with either good discounts or additional savings.
The new Milwaukee Packout-equipped super combo accessory kit I posted about the other day, for example, is a $74.88 special buy in stores. Online, today-only, it’s $69.97. They also have a 2-pack 120pc bundle for $142.97 which makes no sense – why spend more compared to buying 2x of the 60pc set?

If all you really want is the hammer drill kit and Forge battery, that’s by far the best deal out there right now. Like you said, the regular seasonal special buy is $299 for the hammer drill kit with free Forge battery right now. Saving $30 on top of that is much better.
I took a quick look, and haven’t found anything similar to this promo. There are other options where you get the same battery for free, but not with the M18 Fuel hammer drill.

That M12 Variable Speed Polisher/Sander deal of the day is a bit nuts. A polisher + 2.5 high output battery for less than the bare tool or any of the other tool deals is crazy.
I happened to need a polisher and I’m in the M12 battery family already so another 2.5HO is just cake.

Brad, I got this in today.
Oh-boy this is a small polisher (just as advertised). I can knock out some headlamp covers with this but have you/or do you recommend an adpater for larger whole/car pads? larger pads. I see an adapter, to 1/4″, on ebay.
This 2438-20 polisher feels solid. Gonna make some old headlamp covers shine! (3M headlamp kit)

The Milwaukee FUEL 7-1/4″ circular saw w an 8.0 batt for $209 is a SMOKIN deal if you like right-bladed saws. I prefer a left-bladed saw (even though you sometimes fight sawdust on your cut line) but I wouldn’t let that stop me if I was in the market… Reinforces my opinion that there’s no good reason whatsoever to buy a crappy WEAK OLD MODEL 6.5″ non-Fuel circular saw.

I toasted my electric 1/2 hammer drill trying to mix mortar. Now I don’t have one. I’m considering the 1″ sds for $299. Does anyone have thoughts on that? I saw it on their deal of the day on Halloween for $289.

If your old one was just a hammer drill and not a ROTARY hammer drill, then this rotary one is in a completely different league altogether (Will drill into concrete exponentially faster and I mean EXPONENTIALLY!)
I’d recommend the Milwaukee “mud mixer” or if you only mix mud infrequently, use your 110V 1/2 ” drill.
I only use my cordless 2 SDS Rotaries for chiseling and drilling into concrete, so I can’t say for sure, but the rotaries are WAY better than simply a “hammer drill”. Be advised that to do any drilling with normal, non-SDS bits, you will need an adaptor chuck and I’m betting the adapters are maybe $50 now and make your tool maybe 2.5-3″ longer.. (SDS bits are EXPENSIVE and I don’t remember ever seeing any SDS made for wood or metal…if they’re are such, they will be almost prohibitively costly if you’re drilling wood or metal a lot). I also have a 110V Milwaukee SDS rotary and with an adaptor, we drill a lot of 3/4″ holes into treated 6×6’s and it works great. I would never try that w a cordless one though.
If you’re not drilling concrete or chiseling/”mini-jackhammering”, a cordless rotary hammer drill isn’t really for you.

I purchased the DeWalt mud mixing drill the next day. I would like to have a rotary for drilling concrete. That hammer drill didn’t do a great job unless it was like quarter inch or less. It doesn’t come up a lot, but when I need to drill concrete, I don’t want to be there all day. I’ll drop another hint to the wife regarding Christmas.

I was about to dissuade you from getting the SDS until I saw that you bought the mud mixer already. Rotary hammers just do not have anywhere near the same levels of torque that most drills do – quite weak in comparison. They don’t need that torque for what they do and the hammer mechanism is their magic.
But yeah, rotary hammers impact with a lot more energy than any hammerdrill (even the weaker/smaller SDS models like you’re considering), so it will be a vast improvement for you. That said, keep in mind that the advertised max diameter spec really is kind of a max (and actually it’s higher than what is recommended for most work or for frequent use/efficient speeds). So the 1″ should really be considered about a 5/8″ efficiency…it will slow a lot with larger bits but will still work them and will handle larger than 1″ if you don’t mind the slower performance and/or only need to do that occasionally (you can, however, invest in core bits for larger holes…not cheap but will increase the usable capacity for the occasional pipe, etc).
I think Metabo and Bosch and DeWalt have consistently been the better performers across the size ranges but most of the Milwaukees seem to do just fine except that little M12 5/8″. But if you’re not using it a lot then anything will probably make you happy and last a long time, and will absolutely seem like a huge improvement over the hammerdrill.
Pays to shop around for sale pricing but Bosch usually has a great price on a bit kit with several drills and a couple of chisel bits in a convenient case. Since Milwaukee changed their bits from Germany to China a few years back I haven’t bought any more of theirs (they seem to cut slower and not last as long) but sometimes they have starter kits for an ok price, too. It’s been a few years but I got that Bosch starter kit for a lot less on Amazon with random sale pricing. It’s worth checking the prices at Harbor Freight, too, and last I looked the pricing for individual Bosch bits at Lowes was still pretty fair (better than Amazon sometimes). I think the Diablo bits are grossly overpriced at HD but they work well. If you need a ton of holes in a size or two, go Bosch or better yet, find Hilti bits.
If you’re not married to Milwaukee as a battery platform I’d sure give the Bosch 18v models a look (not sure the rotary hammers are included in the Lowes special deals right now but check there as well because they’re pretty good this season).

When in “drill” (non-hammer) mode, my 110V Milwaukee rotary hammer will out-drill THE ABSOLUTE BEST cordless drill. I disagree, with experience to back me up, that a rotary hammer has less torque than a regular drill and are “quite weak in comparison”. Simply not true on a 110V rotary hammer anyway.

It probably depends on the model but yeah, comparing AC vs. DC cordless is not a fair game. AC will of course continue to increase current under load until a breaker trips or it burns itself up, unless it has some safety cutout built in. Give a more apples to apples test and even some impact drivers will give more torque than rotary hammers (cordless for cordless) and a good drill will do more than any impact driver.
I’m going off old data and old memory combined but I think some of the better cordless rotary hammers were topping out somewhere around 30-ish ft. lbs. of torque and many were half that or less. The stronger impact drivers are I think 40-ish and the M18 Fuel was…around 60-65? This would be a great idea to see TTC cover someday if they have any interest in concrete drills.

The SDS deal today also includes an 8ah Forge battery – previously, the deal included an 8ah HO battery. The new Forge batteries are better than the HO equivalents, so there’s some added value there – despite the fact that the retail price on the Forge battery is the same as the HO.
I’m considering the SDS, but don’t think I’d use it enough to justify dealing with buying SDS bits instead of regular ones.

Wow…. glad I stayed strong and resisted the Metabo circular saw deal from a few days back…. I’m far more invested in Milwaukee than any other battery type, and that $200 w/ forge battery really seems like the best deal I’ve seen yet.

I wish I needed some M18 batteries. It’s time I replace a couple Dewalt 18v batteries but the deals on batteries aren’t that great. Don’t need any tools. I saw the previous posting on the Dewalt batteries a couple weeks ago but didn’t seem great…..maybe good…. But not great. I may have to settle for the 2 pack with the free one.

An HD side note. I was in the Massena, NY HD this past weekend and in the last 10 months, the Klein tools is shrinking.
Around Jan/Feb it was 40% Milwaukee, 40% Klein and the last 20% was Commercial Electric. Maybe 3-4 months later, Milwaukee was just a touch over half the hand tool display, Klein and CE each slim down a bit.
This past weekend, Milwaukee was 70%, maybe more. What was left was Klein and about 4 Commercial Electric tools scattered in with the Klein.
I don’t remember Stuart’s last info on this, if Klein was Officially out or just reduced at HD, but it doesn’t look like they will have much of a presence during this upcoming holiday season…at least in the HD I go to.
BTW, the Milwaukee was maybe 60% MITUSA and 40% import.

There’s still a presence of Klein tools at Home Depot, at least for now.
Home Depot has Klein online-only deals, but it looks like the better holiday deal bundles are at Lowe’s.

I’ve been watching Klein shrink at HD over this year, too. Last month it seemed like all they had was 6′ of unstuffed pegboard for testing equipment and maybe 3 whole square feet for hand tools – no linesman pliers, minimal strippers, and only small kitted screwdrivers (none of the traditional famous bread and butter screwdrivers). Pretty sad and what they have will mostly be relegated to DIY buyers (doesn’t seem that too many electricians or tradesmen actually purchase their Klein at HD anyway but there’s almost no reason for them to consider it anymore).
The selection at Lowe’s really isn’t a lot better but they have more sku’s.
Offhand it might seem like it’s a blow to Klein but they do the lion’s share of their sales at supply houses to professionals anyway (and what’s on Amazon), and they sure seem like they’d rather not mess with after-sales and warranty service for home gamers, so they may not be too concerned about the box stores.

Hey man! Followed you for a year or so and love your work. I’m looking at a new combo kit to replace old tools and just in general update my arsenal. Have two bathrooms I need to overhaul this winter. Would you recommend that milwaukee set above or piece together this dewalt set (https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-20-Volt-MAX-ToughSystem-Lithium-Ion-6-Tool-Cordless-Combo-Kit-DCKTS681D1P1/324869940). Maybe once a week general house hold use if my need. Hoping to add outdoor tools to the mix for the battery crossover. Any need for higher end brushless tools or should I go with Ryobi as a non contractor?

There’s a 5-tool combo kit for $599, and you get a bonus Forge battery with it.
The Dewalt combo kit you linked to is a good price – $499 for the 6-tool kit. But is it the right combo for you? If you’re redoing a bathroom, will you need a recip saw instead of the angle grinder?
For outdoor tools, I like Milwaukee better than Dewalt, but they’re both good. They’re also both pricey. You might want different power tool and outdoor power tool platforms.
You might want to build a Dewalt or Milwaukee combo kit with the “free with purchase” starter kit or combo kit options. There are at least 10 ways you can go, from ~$400 to $800 and have long-lasting high-performing tools that should serve you well for years.
Determine which tools you think you might want or need. Look over the deals of the day one more time, and bookmark some model numbers. Even if there aren’t any more deals like this between now and Black Friday, there are usually deals of the day on Black Friday and again on Cyber Monday. Then there are seasonal special buys in between.
Since you don’t need the tools right away, and aren’t quite sure what you want, take the next 2 weeks to answer some questions for yourself. I’ll be here.
Ryobi is a good choice too, with their 18V HP tools helping to elevate their reputation. I’m not seeing great pricing or deals on the better stuff, and so there’s going to be a bigger quality and performance gap between the brands’ best values right now. Will that matter to you? It’s hard to say. Generally, I think it’s a good idea to buy into the best brand you can comfortably afford. Going with Ryobi will get you more tools. Going with Dewalt or Milwaukee will – in general – get you better performance and durability (which you might want or not need).
The BF and CM deals of the day might steer you in a specific direction, which is why it’s good to be able to answer as many questions about what you’re looking for.

In his case, I believe I’d try to find a deal on Ridgid. Free service/free batteries for life and normally quite a bit cheaper than Dewalt or Milwaukee and quite a bit better than Ryobi.

No deals when I was there yesterday. I picked up last of three M18 LED light (the model that charges USB devices and sold without battery for $80). There were plenty of “seeing red” pack out boxes but none less than $30 (for a small 6 compartment…ouch). Even the larger one, was $44. And they were nested that I didn’t realize until trying to open…eeerrrr..what..how? OH… slide it up and away.
I think there aren’t deals. I miss those areas called, “clearance”.
