A reader tipped us off that Home Depot is now selling select ToughBuilt StackTech tool boxes online, which came as a surprise.
StackTech launched at Lowe’s and has recently expanding to online dealers and marketplaces.

Even more surprising, Home Depot is beating Lowe’s on price.

For the StackTech XL tool box shown above, Home Depot’s price is $149, and Lowe’s price is $164, both with free shipping.
I couldn’t find any other sizes at Home Depot, just this one. Maybe it’s a limited test of some kind?
I’m not sure what the implication is here, but it certainly is an interesting development.
Thank you to Adam for sharing their find with us!

Home Depot is my preferred vendor. I will drive past a Lowe’s to get to a Home Depot because I don’t appreciate the way lowes bought Sears and messed up Craftsman
Fowler
I don’t think Lowe’s bought Sears (maybe they bought Orchard Hardware which I think was a Sears subsidiary?) and Lowe’s doesn’t control Craftsman, SBD owns them
Terry S
There are plenty of reasons to decry the changes in Craftsman tools the last 30 years, but Lowes hardly makes that list. They are just a customer of Stanley Black and Decker and probably has little sway as to the what/where/how/when of Craftsman tool production or sales. They may have some price pressure on SBD based on volume, but that’s about it.

This statement is confidently misinformed

Lowe’s didn’t buy Sears or Craftsman. If you were around for the demise of Sears you would have realized Sears ruined Craftsman many years before they closed.
NP
Sears was bought and taken over by a venture capital firm, basically, then cannibalized and sold off piecemeal through less-than-scrupulous deals the the CEO’s own real estate firm, enriching himself and leaving the company struggling to pay rents and debts. This made Sears continue its death spiral.
Look up Eddie Lampert sometime. Its a wild read and a damning indictment of VC firms.
Jim Felt
Such understatement! Attila the Hun would have been impressed with Fast Eddie. Or just as likely in fear of.
Brian H
The day Eddie made it more profitable for a Sears store to sell DeWalt hand tools vs. Craftsman was something…..it is hard to explain how such a great place to work was destroyed by a single human being.

Strange. Lowes has in my area been running a silly ad about the “Lowes’t” price. That they will match competitors’ price. Saw it while watching HGTV. I think it was in terms of bringing it to the Lowe’s store.
Dan G
I too have gotten to the point where, within reason, I will drive by a Lowes to get to a HD. The one and only time I ever tried to price match at Lowes you’d thought I was trying to rob the place. I was just trying to save like $10 on a cordless heat gun and I got run around the store, treated like garbage, and eventually told no they wouldn’t honor the match. Apparently in-stock, shipped and sold by Amazon is not a “competitor” even though their own corporate website said otherwise at the time… HD I never have had a problem- all I have had to do is show the cashier the deal on my phone and sometimes they confirm on their device, but either way they are always super amendable to it.
Dave
Not going to apologize for Lowe’s here because not only are there virtually no stores in my area (like 3 vs. 20+ HDs) but the experience there is no less frustrating than HD when I do stop in, but I’ve never had luck with HD price-matching. Blain’s had the DeWalt construction jacks like $30 cheaper than HD a few months ago and I really wanted to buy a pair on the spot, but two floor reps and one manager insisted they’re not “a competitor” so I had to settle for free shipping and a week of waiting…

I bought my carbon steel cookware from Home Depot online. It is within the realm of ‘home’ but I doubt they ever gave floor space to those items, and I wasnt sure they gave warehouse space to them either.
This could be something like that—Home Depot as the virtual storefront representing inventory somewhere.
Bonnie
Yeah they do a marketplace thing where other companies sell through HD’s website, but those are usually clearly marked as such.
Jronman
Lots of companies are Scamazon-ifying their online storefront. Adding a bunch of stuff not sold in stores. Walmart, Tractor Supply, Best Buy, Home Depot, and possibly others do this.

I hope this is a sign that new Stacktech boxes such as the (large) single or 4 drawers that has been released in other parts of the world for sometime are coming to the US.
Adam
I sure hope you are right. I am waiting patiently for a few of the drawer boxes and my hope is that Home Depot will sell them. As others have mentioned, I avoid Lowe’s as much as possible and prefer Home Depot. I recently had a less than stellar experience with an online order from Lowe’s. I would be stoked if Home Depot carried the StackTech line.
Julian Tracy
The ONLY thing Lowes does better than HD is a larger variety of cordless tools in stock. I don’t mean more brands, I mean a deeper asst of Dewalt tools or Tablesaws, for instance compared to HD. Good help you if you need plumbing or electrical supplies from Lowes: very limited selection. Menards offers a deeper selection of electrical and plumbing, and within pretty much ANY dept, but it’s a useless place to buy any power tools. And – it’s a depressing store for a variety of reasons; the Walmart of building supply stores.

I can get Two of these DeWalt XL boxes (I don’t have Stacktech) for that Lowes price.

These lock and are great for storing tools and more. Though I want to see if these Stacktech are instore to compare quality. Funny that my System 2.0 XL boxes have different hinges than the newer Dewalt, and no longer have vent cap.
Dave
I wonder if this is actually Home Depot selling and shipping these, or if it’s Spreetail selling through HD.
Stuart
Home Depot doesn’t sell other products that Spreetail sells, and so I doubt it. Maybe it’s an experiment to drop-ship via Spreetail, but there are no indications of this being the case.
Nathan
Home Depot at one time carried other toughbilt stuff like their saw horses and things. So hopefully this is a sign that home Depot will be another viable storefront for them and they aren’t tied to Lowe’s.
I have gotten to where I shop Lowe’s and home Depot via app but try to not drive to either
Robert
Home Depot link not working “Product has been removed”
Stuart
Thanks for letting me know!
I’m glad I included a screen capture.
