Home Depot Special Buy Deal of the Day Feb 12th 2018

Over at Home Depot, they have a couple of tool-related deals of the day today.

  • Dewalt DHS716AB FlexVolt Miter Saw (Tool-Only w/ AC Adapter): $299 (Same at Amazon)
  • Ridgid 18V R9626N 8-Tool Cordless Combo Kit: $549
  • Ryobi 18V P1894 8-Tool Cordless Combo Kit: $349
  • Milwaukee M12 Heated Jacket Kit in Gray and X-Large: $99
  • Dewalt DWMT73801 108pc Mechanics Tool Set: $50
  • Dewalt DWMT73813 23pc 1/2″ Ratchet and Socket Set: $30 (Same at Amazon)
  • Dewalt DWMT73804 34pc 1/4″ and 3/8″ Socket Set: $25 (Same at Amazon)

The FlexVolt miter saw, which is the non-sliding 12″ saw, looks to be a good buy for someone on the market for an AC saw and who might buy into FlexVolt a later time. Or maybe someone who already has FlexVolt battery packs. Just keep in mind that it comes with an AC adapter but no batteries or charger.

The Ryobi 18V cordless power tool combo kit comes with a miter saw! I think that’s the first time I have ever seen a cordless miter saw as a combo kit inclusion. Nice.

Deals end at 3am ET 2/13/2018, unless supplies sell out sooner.

Random question of the day .

Out of the 2 kits. Ridgid or ryobi. What would u pick.

Id go ryobi. I do not see the added value in ridgid. I feel ryobi is super innovative and am always wishing i had a charger and a few batteries cuz i would buy a chemical sprayer and a glue gun . Probably a grease gun and a caulk gun as well

Kinda…LOVE the oddball Ryobi stuff, been using the caulk gun all morning. I found Ryobi’s eclectic selection pairs well with my more commonly used DeWalt tools. Much easier to justify a lesser used tool at 1/3 the cost of a similar yellow tool.

I’m the same way, ryobi fills in the odd tools dewalt doesn’t have yet. Love the cordless glue gun too.

I actually just had a friend 3d-print me a battery adapter so I can use my primary tool’s batteries in the ryobi tools, and promptly bought the glue gun and caulking gun. The savings of buying the occasional use tools in ryobi would pay for a cheap 3d printer after just a couple of tools( cheap printers are less than $200 now). There are several already made models on [thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=ryobi+adapter&sa=) so you don’t even need to know how to do 3d modeling.

If you are going to use an adapter printed from Thingiverse make sure you use something made by Simhopp (or a remix of one of his designs).

I’ve printed out a ton of battery adapters and holders for many different platforms and the ones he’s designed always fit and work perfectly.

The adapter I have was designed by him, his stuff is VERY well designed, and like u said fits perfectly. it also is very robust, it was printed with a low infill but is still very strong feeling.

I would really like to see you do a post about some of these items, as I think this may be an eye opener for some of your readers. 🙂

I am no expert, but it seems like Ryobi tools vary a lot from tool to tool. So you have to look at each one. Apparently the OMT they include with their kits is terrible.

On the dewalt miter saw. What is a cutline blade positioning system? This isn’t the same as the XPS is it?

Yes. It’s the LED shadow-line system. They moved away from “XPS” branding for some reason.

XPS = “Cross cut positioning system.” I guess cutline blade positioning system is more descriptive?

Yes, Cutline is the new name for the technology and takes the place of the XPS name.

Thanks for the help. I already have the 60V batteries and this is in my price point. The only thing I am hesitating on is thinking I will regret not having a slider at some point.

Would I be better off getting a corded slider when they go on sale? I also want one with the Cutline system as I don’t want to mess with lasers. Didn’t have luck with the current one I have.

I honestly don’t know what to recommend.

I don’t know which of the sliders have the Cutline system, aside for the DWS780. The DWS780 is a good saw, but it’s practically the same price as the FlexVolt kit. Sometimes the FlexVolt kit is on sale, sometimes the DWS780 is bundled with a free stand.

Milwaukee and Ridgid also have similar LED shadow-sight cut guidance systems.

If you’re working out of a home workshop, you might not need the capacity and footprint of a slider. If you work on-site, you might not want to have to find a circular saw or miter gauge and table saw to make larger cross cuts.

          Tough call.

Thanks….for what I use it for having the battery is probably more important to me than the capacity. I don’t want to spend the $$ to get the battery slider so think this will be a good compromise.

I too had the same conundrum, but I realized I grew up with a 10” non-slider, and only once or twice that I can remember needed more crosscut capacity. And those crosscuts didn’t particularly need miter saw accuracy I don’t think, so the circular was perfectly accurate. Just upping to the 12” saw was good enough for me, the extra price, size, weight, and potential for slop in the slider for the very rare actual times I need that capacity just weren’t worth it.

Someone on a job site cutting wider materials where time is money and getting out the circular saw wastes minutes would do well with the slider. For any non-pro user, unless you are routinely doing projects with super-wide crosscuts, I cant really see justifying a sliding miter saw, especially since you presumably also first had a circular saw.

I went with the DHS790T2 which is $649 on Amazon right now. I got it over Xmas for $499 and added the ac adapter for another $50. At $499 it came with the dual charger and a pair of flex volt batteries. I thought that was a premium buy at the time.

I don’t know that I will need the slider very often, but the aggravation of needing it and not having it, outweighs the extra cost for me. The saw seems to perform as well as the 780 imo.

I love that ryobi set but the ridgid set has their 3 year warranty and a lifetime service agreement by purchasing it at Home Depot.

I only have a cheap socket set I got from Wal-Mart. It only goes up to 1/2″ and 13mm in SAE and metric. I’ve been looking on a deal on a socket set for a bit now. I will mostly use sockets for assembly and occasionally driving in lag bolts. Would either of these be a good set for me?

The 1/4″ & 3/8″ set, and 1/2″ set, do look to complement each other nicely. They’re at good price points. The 1/4″ & 3/8″ set only comes with a 3/8″ ratchet.

I’m trying to think of reasons why I couldn’t say “go for it,” but I’m coming up short.

Take some time to think it over. If they sell out, it wasn’t meant to be. And if they don’t, you can be sure that you didn’t jump at the deal and thought it through.

Even if you upgrade again in the future, these could make for compact take-along kits.

Thanks! I went with the 1/2″ set. It complements the sockets I’m lacking from my other set pretty well.

Those dewalt socket sets look pretty cool. I keep hoping to see some milwakee kits at my home depot but haven’t seen any yet. I don’t know if i would order a set, it’s more of something i think i would have to see and feel to see if i wanted a set…. even though i have too many sockets already lol.

I highly doubt that Milwaukee will make a socket wrench set any time soon. Even if they did, it probably wouldn’t be anywhere near the price range dewalt is selling their’s for. Milwaukee seems a little too proud of their products. I’ve got 2 sets of the dewalts and they are well made and worth the price. I’ve got the 205 piece set (not sold by HD) and the ⅜ set. They’re pretty awesome and feel good in the hand.
