We were at IKEA last weekend, and I came across their new Skadis pegboard and accessory line. It looked interesting. Light duty, but perhaps useful for workshop needs.
I picked up two boards and some accessories to test and play around with. Please let me know if you have any questions!

The new IKEA Skadis pegboard system features a couple of different pegboard sizes, each 22″ tall. There are 14.25″, 22″, and 30″ widths.
You have two color options – brown and white. The brown Skadis pegboard is finished with clear acrylic lacquer, and the white one with acrylic paint. They’re made from fiberboard.
Accessory options include hooks, large hooks, small shelves, bungee cord hooks, small containers, and removable clear containers.

I didn’t see the loop hooks at my Ikea store yet, but they look decent. I wonder how well they’ll work with screwdrivers and other such tools.
It’s too soon to comment on the usefulness or quality of the components, but it seemed good enough for me to buy a couple of boards and accessories on the spot.
You can mount Skadis pegboard to the wall, or to a benchtop or Ikea Algot rail with optional accessories.

I’ve been thinking about this system for my bike room, shelves included. The install of a smaller system in my son’s closet, although the lack of 16” centers did require some tweaking of install to satisfy my OCD. My solution was to drill into horizontal supports. Nice system for the price.

These remind of Elfa’s Utility boards. We have the white version in our Flex room.
The Elfa ones are not meant for pegboard hooks though, and (from memory), the slots seem narrower. They are metal though and the accessories are OK for office / home use, but so much for tools.

Just came across this.
The Elfa looks sturdier, being metal. But the kit you have there costs $76 (though discounted 25% every spring), and the IKEA Skadis kit costs $36 and has twice the area.
On the other hand, the Elfa board integrates with the Elfa post and rail system, while the Algot rail system, which the Skadis works with, seems to have been discontinued.

Is it functionally better than ordinary pegboard? And is it compatible with ordinary pegboard accesories? I would prefer not to have to drive to IKEA every time I need some new hooks or something.

What I’d really like to know is how well the hooks or bins stay anchored to the board when you’re grabbing something out of the bin or pulling a screwdriver out of a loop.

I had the same thought. I use the plastic doohickies that cane with my pegboard hooks and they work pretty well to anchor the hooks down.

The price seems pretty good. I’m not sure I’d use in the garage but this looks perfect to put in our tiny kitchen for my girlfriend to organize all our receipts and bills.
I’m also curious as to the diameter of the tool holder. Their site says it’s 2″ deep so maybe around 1.5″ diameter hole after subtracting the vertical part off that sticks off the back? Surely they made it so screwdrivers and such won’t fall through. Guess maybe I have to see in person.

I don’t think so.
“Regular” pegboard hooks – engage with the back of the board at the top of the hole.
Since the holes on this Ikea style are elongated the regular hooks would not be able to engage completely – and smaller hooks (J style or L style) might just fall out. Other pegboard hooks like 2-prong bracket hooks might fare better – but might not be as strong as they are in use with normal pegboard.

I still prefer 1/4” holes in 1/4” duolux Masonite. The old KD and/or knockoff steel attachments. Always with the addition of the little black plastic cross hole hooks.
Amazon has them.
We’ve used them with no failures for decades.

Idk much about Duolux branded pegboard but I would recommend anyone looking to buy pegboard to seek out the 1/4″ thick stuff as oppo sed to the 1/8″ stuff that seems to have become the standard. It’s harder to find but is worth it.

The pegboard itself looks pretty expensive, but accessories are interesting, nice and affordable. Hm… I have access to a laser cutter…
I share the concern about hooks staying put. Thats why I stopped using regular pegboard.

I have only ever had problems with cheap hooks not staying put. the good 1/4″ thick gauge hooks stay put.

For garage applications, especially with humidity being a factor where I am, I will stick to my Wall Control panels. Probably way more expensive than the IKEA board, but I’m confident I won’t have to replace them.

Ikea says they can be used in bathrooms, and so presumably humidity isn’t an issue.

In the photo, it looks attractive enough for use in the kitchen or bedroom, unlike regular pegboard. Kind of like a textured wall.

I used Ikea heavy duty standards and shelf brackets in a number of closets in my last place. Liked them – good value and plenty sturdy, but after a few years they discontinued the series. Would worry about that on something like this that isn’t industry standard and could go out of stock at any point in the future.

Just to mention it, there are also steel pegboards that will last much longer (the holes don’t wear and get larger) and come with wall standoffs. Magnets will also stick to them. But they are more expensive and probably heavier. They have appeared here a few times.

We are considering using Skådis for hanging pans in the kitchen. But we use heavy solid steel pans. Not sure if those boards and hooks are strong enough.

I’m using mine to hold my cast iron skillets and aluminum pots. It’s fine! Just make sure to properly anchor the bracket that comes with the unit and you’re good.

I know non-Ikea accessories don’t work on Ikea pegboards, but could the Ikea accessories work on a regular non-Ikea pegboard? Or might it depend on the accessory?

If you’re still wondering, the answer is NO. We tried using Ikea’s attractive pegboard fixtures on an existing pegboard we have in our nusery. The good ‘ol American holes were a little too wide for Ikea’s accessories. And, even if they were at the same width, the hooks on the back are designed to fit into that elongated hole. The physics would just never work. We WERE able to use the elastic cord accessory ( https://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/40321631/) by forcefully jamming the ends into our pegboard holes.
We also took the fabric bags from this accessory kit (https://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/20377799/) and wrapped their velcro bands around normal pegboard hooks. It works well! But, that’s all we could use.

Thank you for this answer! I was just about to order some accessories to go on my good ol’ regular pegboard that was just installed in my craft room. It’s a bummer, though, because the IKEA accessories are, by far, the best looking ones i have seen.

Which peg board would be easier to paint based on how they are finished? White or tan? Would it require sanding? Primer? Thanks!

The brown pegboard has a clear acrylic lacquer, and the white an acrylic paint. Applying a primer, or sanding to scuff or even remove the factory finish, will likely yield better results.
You might be able to get away with not using a primer, but it’ll depend on the type of paint you use.

Do the boards have to be mounted with the holes vertical or can they be horizontal, I brought the square and the small rectangle to display one above the other but now am home the instructions show they have to be vertical which means I can’t have them one above the other. Can they be mounted the other way up or will this stop me being able to hang the shelves, pegs and mail bag….?

If you want full use of the accessories, they need to be vertical. Maybe only the hooked bungee cords can be used with the board in either orientation.

I know you specified the ikea accessories were not compatible with the original peg board but can they be used on the container store pegboard?

Interesting question.
Visually, looking at both up close, chances seem slim regarding peg size and spacing. The container store slots look rather narrow and spaced differently.
If you have access to a 3d printer, you could print a small 3d double hook or something ( from a site like thingiverse ) and double check, without having to order a product.

I bought two of these to mount my son’s nerf guns on. Sadly, the fog ate one of the packages of hardware. Im looking fo a substitute for the plastic screw head thingys that mount the board to the metal mount. Any suggestions? I went to the hardware store and cant find just tge right thing. The hole in the metal bracket is quite small, the head of the screw/pin must be wider than the pegboard. I guess I could use a little flashing or something to keep the screw head from falling out of the hole. I also need something to to substitute for the little plastic nubs that raise the board off the wall. Any creative tool people have suggestions?? Ive been to Ace twice and keep failing. Thanks!

If you contact Ikea they *might* be able to send you the missing part.
My experience with Ikea products is that off-the-shelf hardware, except for small wood screws, are never exactly right. For something like this, I unfortunately can’t think of a suitable replacement.

I’ve had the boards for a while, and I recently saw your image with the clock. I liked it and bought the TJALLA wall clock due to the resembalance, but I can’t find a safe way to hang it. Was that the clock you used? Can you guide me on how to hang the clock on the board? Thank you.

Having purchased a house with a garage that had lots of pegboard space on the garage walls and inside of the garage cabinets … and having hung a fair share of clocks … I’d expect that image to be nothing more than a clock with the keyhole cutout being place over a slightly angled but maybe shortened wallboard peg … whether one has the decades old traditional round hold peg board or the modern slotted equivalent.

Actually, I’ve learned that they small pegs that are meant for the bottom of the board are the perfect size for the keyhole. Now I have one at the bottom in the middle and the board is stable so everything worked out.
