Klein NCVT-3 Voltage Tester and Flashlight

Did you read about the new Klein voltage tester that we posted about last month? It’s impact-resistant, dustproof, waterproof, sensitive down to 12V and up to 1000V, and it’s got a built-in LED flashlight. It also has a high-low scale to show voltage strength.

Yup, this is a neat little voltage tester, and you could win one!

We have arranged with Klein to give away (5) of these NCVT-3 testers to readers. That means you have pretty good chances of winning one!

It’s surprising how handy something like this could be. I don’t do much electrical work, but found myself using it to troubleshoot a surge protector and power adapter just the other day. it turns out that the adapter was okay, the wiring was okay, but the part that plugs into my device had failed, possibly due to poor strain relief.

Oh, and it’s still a waterproof, dustproof, and impact-resistant flashlight. While not as bright or compact as other pocket flashlights, the LED built into the NCVT-3 has an independent on/off button and is bright enough to be useful.

How to Enter: Leave a comment in reply to this post, and put some thought into it. You could tell me how you plan to use the tester, or simply tell me about your favorite Klein tool.

If you can’t think of anything to say, get creative and write a poem about Klein, their voltage tester, or any Klein tool in your toolbox. Maybe a haiku to keep things simple.

If you still can’t think of anything to say as part of your entry, spend some time on the Klein Tools website and tell me which Klein tool you’d like to potentially see in a future giveaway.

Rules: Only those with continental USA addresses are eligible to enter. The (5) winners will be selected at random. There will be a total of (5) prizes. Prizes will be shipped by Klein directly to the winners.

Deadline: Entry ends at 11:59pm ET on 6/19/2015.

There are two electrical tools I recommend to any less-savvy friend as soon as they buy their first home. Usually premised with the promise that “If you weren’t into DIY before, you’re about to be forced to learn.”

The first is a standard outlet tester – the little three-light number that tells you if the outlet is grounded, and if the prongs are wired correctly. If their home inspector was worth his/her salt they put one in every outlet already, but I firmly beleive everyone should own one of these.

The second is one of these. A non-contact meter is cheap insurance against a nasty shock. I can firmly say one of these has saved me a trip to the ER – there was an extra *live* wire in a ceiling box that did not belong there. Get one, keep it handy, thank me later then it beeps to warn you that you’re about to enter a world of pain.

Or don’t, and get used to the nickname “Sparky”

This tool plays well with my paranoid nature. I NEVER trust that a line is dead until I have tested it with a voltage tester.
Oh, and don’t forget to test the tester on a live circuit, just so you know that the tester actually works.

Our House is wired with Knob & tube, and needs to be rewired this summer… So I’m sure there’s going to be quit a bit of use for the tester and plenty of use for a flashlight since a lot of crawlspace, atticts and other dark corner and spots need to be accessed.
    Have a good day,

I’ll never forget the day I wired up a chandelier thinking the power was off. I nearly fell off my ladder when I screwed in a light bulb only to see it light up. That taught me a lesson on triple checking the power. These voltage testers are a valuable tool.

Myself and some family members are in the process of renovating a part of a 100-year old building. There’s lots of electrical work that has been done over the years, and it’s not always clear on what’s connected to what. This would be a big help in occasionally mapping out circuits, and of course offering assurance you aren’t about to zap yourself!

The flashlight on this model seems like a great feature!

Awesome looking tool. I have had the simple version, which only checks for live circuits and it is on it’s last legs (used and abused). This tool looks like it would be a great addition and replacement. Thanks for the opportunity.

I almost bought this yesterday at Home Depot after my Milwaukee died. I would really like to try this tester however I have had so many bad testers over the years I was forced to stick with the Milwaukee I have been using for the past year. It has been by far the most reliable I have used to date. The only reason I broke it is I dropped it into a sump pump pit and it was damaged by the water. I would LOVE to get a free Klein model and compare it to the Milwaukee. If it proves reliable the extra features such as sensitivity and low voltage testing would be really nice to have around. Send me one and I’ll let you know my conclusion after several months.

This type of tool (non-contact voltage tester) is the closest thing to magic i’ve found. I first saw one used in January 2014 on a part time project with a friend and was amazed how well it worked and how useful it was. Just poke the “magic wand” at the wire or outlet and it glows and beeps if it has voltage: magic!

I actually have a lesser Klein model, and love the fact that it uses AAA batteries. The cheap knock-offs in HD use something less common. This model would be a great help (and if it had come out a year earlier I would have bought it instead) because for some reason I always drop this tool. In fact, all of the three people I know that use this type of tool are regularly dropping it. Something about the use case and form factor, I guess. So the impact rating on the Tough Meter is great. But most useful of all is the strength meter. The model i bought has a high voltage range that gives a different response, but I have realized in my work of troubleshooting building wiring and HVAC i’m usually much more interested in knowing whether i’m getting a full 110V, 220V, or seeing some diminished voltage from bad wiring.

So why do I want a Tough Meter? Because it takes the magic wand and elevates it to the Ultimate Harry Potter Edition.

I dont know how I went so long without a Non Contact Voltage tester. Just so much easier for a DIY-er like myself to be sure that Im not touching live wires.

But alas, my cheap unit from Sears has broken, so a new Klein would be great to have.

I think the flashlight idea is great too, because I always end up testing boxes that dont really have much light shining on them.

I would like one of these because I am a boundry pushing do-it-yourselfer and this could very well save my life. Though the tingle of a 120 volt shock is all-too-familiar to me, one of these days the jolt could knock me off my ladder or something else to compound the stupidity. Every year I find I have not quite hit the right breaker or some other stupid thing to get bite by the all powerful Volt, Amp or Watt.

Stuart… Be like the overpowered government and protect me from my stupidity! You’re my only hope!

I’m not trying to kiss your 455 here Stuart. I’m being 100% honest.

Klein is one of those companies that I didn’t give a second thought. I assumed it was just another rebadge brand when I’d see their tools in the specialty areas of Home Depot. They were never in the “main” tool aisle. And then I subscribed to ToolGuyd’s RSS feed, and pretty soon, my knowledge of tools (and of the tool industry as a whole) increased significantly. Now I see how Klein (and a few other manufacturers) are making tools that really are special — with features that cater to the pro and semi-pro — that even an amateur tool enthusiast (that’s me) can appreciate. Since making that realization, I’ve purchased a number of Klein tools (network tester, several different pliers, a toolbox) that I use often.

I think you’re really doing a great service to us the readers *and* to the manufacturers. We learn about better tools, while they get honest, real-world exposure.

    Thanks!

I actually have the 50-100V non-flashlight version of this tester (NCVT-1) which has proven to be very handy. “Oh I turned that line off. Let me just double-check. BEEEP! Oh …”. This little model would be more handy as going down to 12V would let me test my low voltage lines as well.

That said, my favorite Klein tool is actually one of the ones I’ve had for the longest time. I pair of wire cutters/strippers that I bought years and years ago to set up my first home theater. That was before any DIY projects when I lived in an apartment and just needed to strip some speaker wire. 11045. It ironically has outlasted all other tools I had from that time period since it never needed to be upgraded and was completely overkill for what I bought it for :).

A potential tool in the future? The Klein High Leverage Side Cutting Pliers (Linesman Pliers). That’s one tool I’ve never bought a high quality version of and probably should have.

My dad was an electrician for 40 years. As a kid, I would go to the jobsite’s occasionally with him, and hand him tools as he needed them. He had a large wire cutter in his bag, and always referred to it as “the Klein”. I thought that was the name of the tool, rather than the brand since he always referred to that one tool that way. I recently inherited his “Klein”, and think about chasing tools and wires for him as a little kid. Now, I own “The Klein”.

These tools are great when kept in their proper perspective. They get blasted a lot by people who don’t understand their limitations. Although they have limited use for diagnostics, they are much more beneficial for safety. That makes them great for professionals and casual users alike.

I have a lazy habit that makes this one especially appealing. Although I don’t like resetting clocks, DVD players, etc, I hate dealing with the rituals of locating individual breakers. I haven’t invested in a breaker finder because it’s not enough of a routine for me. Anyway, I tend to hit the main and kill the entire panel when I do electrical tasks. I am therefore working a lot in the dark. Having a built in flashlight is a combination that makes perfect sense.

This would be really handy to avoid carrying yet another item, “flashlight,” to fiddle with when the lights are out anyway.

Try the renovation of an old school building into apartments and community events center… Construction of the building began as a one room school house in the 20’s, and new addition after new addition has created the most jumbled maze of wires imaginable. There were about 2 dozen breaker boxes when I bought the building and more now that there are apartments being made from old classrooms. A breaker for one classroom is located on the wall of another classroom over 100 feet away. That same room has circuits from 3 different panels. You open a junction box and there are wires for 3 or 4 different circuits routed through it. A couple panels are now giant junction boxes. Its like those games you use to find on kids placemats at restaurants where you follow the lines through the tangled mess to get the kid his ice cream cone. Also mix in old and new wires (fabric wrapped up to THHN), line voltage with low voltage, in-use with abandoned and you can have a field day of adventure! Put things all in metal conduit, some which has rusted so badly so that you can’t pull a box cover without breaking the screw mounts and you have a very, very long day ahead tracking things down. You have to kill breakers in 3 locations to work a single line or risk a nasty surprise… oh and did I mention this building is also 3 phase with a 240V leg? The flashlight would also help as I have to climb through attic, crawl space, and behind cabinets to find my wires…. very nice to help identify jacket type and color.
I’ve tried a couple different voltage testers in the past with mixed results. My only reliable one, a tiny clip on my father got me years ago for Christmas, disappeared on me. I have never been able to find another. No replacement I bought ever was reliable enough to make me feel confident in their ability to keep me safe. I have come to have a high regard for Klein tools and would love to have one of these to put to the test. It would hopefully find a permanent spot in my electrial tool bag and give me a bit of peace of mind the next time I need to rewire the next apartment.

Otherwise, I’d like to see a review on their auto-loading utility knife (44132). I’ve used a couple different brands in the past, and like the idea of auto-loading but always have problems with the blade slipping out while making different cuts. I also sometimes have this problem with simpler retractable blade utility knifes.

Never assume a circuit isn’t live without checking! Here’s how I learned that: I had a job for a while where I helped service gas station equipment and I was riding with a guy who had 12 years experience. We went to a call where the complaint was the emergency pump cutoff button didn’t work (large red mushroom button on the outside front wall). We first went to see if the breaker was off…yup. My partner happened to be wearing glasses, which he usually only did while driving. He removed the screws holding the button box closed and laid it down on the housing underneath. ZORCH!! Big fat spark and a drop of molten metal hit him…right in the middle of one eyeglass lens. We figured out there was no breaker in the line, which carried 440V at 200 amps.

    True story:

I am glad this tool is non-contact. Does anyone remember those electrical test screwdrivers with neon bulb? The one you had to ground through your body by touching the metal contact on the back of the handle?

Decades ago, an I-beam and everything attached to it got electrified somehow. The conclusion was that it was due to recent electrical work on at the adjoining buildings. However, the electrician there claimed that there is nothing wrong with beam and that he checked all the fixtures attached to it and could not detect any AC.
A second electrician was hired and to look into and he said that the beam was not electrified. Yet, whenever anyone touch anything attached to the beam, they got a nice zap.

Finally my uncle, an electrician by trade, decide to look into it. He witnessed the second electrician testing the I-beam and fixtures for electricity using one those screwdrivers. Sure enough, the screwdriver was not glowing, indicting no electricity. There was problem though. Both previous electricians used a wooden ladder to get to the beam. Those screwdrivers don’t work if you’re well insulated from ground! There was a wire with cut insulation contacting the chassis of a light fixture which attached to the beam. The current was not high enough to blow a fuse either.

    Stuey and Klein Tools,

Thanks for the giveaway! I would love to win the Klein non-contact voltage tester! I would like to add it to my Klein 2 piece, 6 inch cushion grip nut drivers like Home Depot sells here: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-Tools-6-in-Magnetic-Nut-Driver-Set-2-Piece-646M/100648041?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-202266599-_-100648041-_-N#customer_reviews. I find the 1/4″ driver useful when servicing yearly my furnace. I remove the flame sensors with the 1/4″ Klein driver, clean the carbon deposits off the tips with emory cloth, and re-install back into the furnace. The long length of the driver (with the magnetic tips) makes removing and re-installing the flame sensors recessed into the furnace a breeze.

I started collecting Klein linesman pliers about 15 years when i found a pair from the 20’s in almost perfect condition at a swap meet. The trademark on the side of a lineman on a pole with a coil of wire with twist at the bottom is very deeply impressed into the pliers. I am now up to 14 pair. I only collect the ones with undamaged logo and without nicks in cutters.
I have found many electricians use them as a hammer and flatten out the logo.

I’m part of the office mafia, but try to work with tools as much as I can. After the Klein stubby, I decided to upgrade all my screwdrivers. Just waiting for the right sale.

As far as electrical work, I don’t have any experience and I’m a little bit scared of electrical work, because I don’t understand it enough. That being said, I’m currently upgrading the electrical in my shed and the backyard. Had an electrician look at it, and while it’s not a huge mess, it will need some work. For years now I have used electrical testers on construction sites for the purpose of convenience, knowing in power plants the power can be interpreted bye wet conditions, overloading, bad cords, ect. A good amount of time and effort is saved not tracking cords down half the day to find the problem, few see this importance of such a useful device. Not all ground faults have led indicator built-in.
Also with the new Klein Switch Drive screwdriver, repairs on various types of equipment is a breeze. Day to day work is often made easy with the right tool for the right job.

It may even keep you on your feet

With an LED light to show you the way
Plus it’s a Klein so it’s worth what you pay

Waterproof seals for gross bathroom jobs
Dustproof, too, even when there’s gobs

All these features are really swell
I know it’ll last and I put tools thru hell

This is a pretty neat little voltage detector. I think the flashlight feature would come in handy when I start rewiring my garage later this year. There’s lots of nooks and crannies where I’ll be doing work that the shop lights don’t reach, so this would help big time.

My favorite Klein tool is the 1412 which is a stripper that can strip the outer jacket from 14-2 or 12-2 just as easily as the insulation from a single conductor. It saves a bunch of time and makes much neater looking cuts.

My dad always told me (and now me to my son) always buy the best tools you can afford. His only exception was when working on anything electrical and he insisted on always and only using Klein. He jokingly told me (with a serious look on his face) take out a loan if have too, but always buy Klein electrical tools since your life may depend on them. I was young and like “yea right” until I had my own son. This would a great addition to HIS Klein collection instead of using all of mine.

I’m an apprentice electrician from Michigan, and I use Klein tools on everything, from their speedy-drivers, to their newest linemans pliers and side cutters, and I would love to add one of these to my tool bag. I’m only 19 years old so I can guarentee that it’ll get a lifetime of use, and I’d even report back on how durable it is. I always seem to need a flashlight and it’s the one thing I don’t have in my bag yet so this would be a great addition.

My father worked 40+ years as an electrician at a local steel mill. He used to tell me about the old testers they had that plugged into a flashlight for a continuity test. It seemed like a great idea until the guys tested a live wire and the battery powered flashlight exploded on them.

Well done Klein! Your inventiveness and forward thinking will not only be a staple for all electricians but will increase their safety while shedding a light on the areas needing review, literally.

The house my wife and I purchased was evidently quickly rewired by the home owner with whatever wire was on sale at the local hardware. It’s a colorful random assortment of different wire throughout the house. Our inspector didn’t catch this. So it looks like my next project is a complete overhaul. Fun! I’ve always been a fan of the Klein tool bags. Although I’m not sure I could keep them looking as good as they do when they are clean, I do appreciate a nice tool bag.

Over the past year I did some house electrical work which required some help from my electrian neighbor. I’d use this to replace my Sperry-branded one. It’s been a decent unit, but it’s overly sensitive whereas this Klein one seems to better represent the actual danger (or lack there-of). And, of course, the flashlight would be a great help since a lot of times I’m testing wires where there isn’t much light!

Having a non-contact voltage tester is essential, I feel, for the homeowner that wants to do his own minor repair work. Replacing bad light switches, or even light fixtures, can be a lot safer with one of these. I use mine all the time just to be extra sure that there is no power and that I have isolated the right circuit at the breaker panel. I have a basic Klein model currently, but one with a little light would be awesome.

This is a tool I would use regularly on the farm. It seems that there is a loose wire or dead circuit just when it is most needed. I really, really like that it is weatherproof (no, I don’t mess with wiring outside while it’s raining) but by its nature, farm maintanence is an ‘all weather’ experience, whether it’s getting the power washer running again, or troubleshooting a water pump. My old one is not weatherproof, so I don’t have it in my grab ag of tools for fear of ruining it, which has caused a few extra trips ack to the shop to fetch it.
I also like the little guage that shows the relative amount of voltage in the wire. I could see ho that would e useful.

When trouble shooting an air handler in a 120 degree attic, the ncvt-3 is my best friend. When I have a simple yes voltage/no voltage question, this little bundle of joy gives it to me straight. I love that klein has made the ncvt-3 low voltage friendly. The built in flash light is great for working in low light spaces. The only improvement I can think of is to make the flash light brighter. Unfortunately, the one I had purchased was inadvertently dispatched to Never Never Land. I lent it to a co worker and I never saw it again. Now that I’m back to fumbling with my multi meter in these hot box attics I really miss my Klein ncvt-3. I suppose I had to loose it to realize just how useful it really was. The ncvt-3 is not a gimmicky tool, nor was it a tool bag queen. I constantly reached for it and when I did it gave me the information I needed to do my job. If I am not selected to receive a complimentary ncvt-3 I will be purchasing one by the end of the week. Either way, I will be using one again in the near future.

Just yesterday I ordered a Klein RT600 GFCI outlet tester. I live in an older home that has some upgrades, including GFCI circuit breakers to protect some of the house circuits. With the RT600 I should be able to test those GFCI circuits. Also, I will be moving next year and the RT600 will allow me to test all the outlets in my new home before we move in. Then I can fix any problems I find and I can have some assurance that the wiring in the home my family lives in is properly done. This will give me some peace of mind. To tie this in with the voltage tester give-away, if I win I will use the voltage tester to make sure the circuit is off before I make any needed repairs.

To the electricians out there: why do a lot of these voltage testers and insulated tools go to specifically 1000v, isn’t 240v the max one could possibly be dealing with aside from power stations and high voltage lines?

I really could use one of the voltage detectors. I work on industrial generators and my job requires us to carry a non contact voltage detector. It is also a necessity to carry a small flashlight as when customers notice their generator is not working is always during a power outage. So a device that kills 2 birds with one stone makes my pockets weigh less.

Recently I was replacing a 1950s ceiling fan with my grandpa in his crooked rental house. He made his living as a lineman for AT&T and did the same job during his service in the Korean War. He obviously has quite a bit of experience playing with electricity so I figured that between him and I we knew what we were doing. As any responsible electrician would, we shut off the breaker and used a cheap non-contact voltage tester to trick ourselves into believing we were safe. I proceeded to untwist the wires and unbolt the fixture; in the process, I managed to tangle with an undischarged capacitor and simultaneously scare myself out of my boots. I could definitely use a more reliable tester like the Klein to keep from getting electrocuted.

The number one problem I have is dropping them. After a fall at counter height they all are pretty much useless. If you dont loose the cap after it goes flying across the room you will usually break the leds are loose the speaker sound.

The most intriguing part to me is the drop rating on this one. I carry a olight as my edc flashlight but the flashlight could make a nice back up in a pinch.

I own so many klien tools. I don’t know if I would buy it cause I’m sure the flashlight gets in the way when trying to see which wire is live. If I actually won this I could tell you all the things it needs. So when they make a revised one theyll know. It def should have a magnet so you clip it on the side of the panel so you can see which circuit your testing

I work in the security industry and there are a lot of open terminals in our panels with voltages from 6vdc to 240v ac and it would be much easier and safer to double check if something is energized by using one of these instead of a multimeter. Love Klein tools and buy them whenever I can fit them in my budget (not often). I have a few screw and nut drivers, some strippers and a few different pliers. Never had any issues with any of them. I have taught electrical shop at a vocational high school for 16 years and will only buy Klein hand tools for student use. Kids put these tools through every imaginable situation and Klein tools are up to the challenge. All of them are great but the best new development is the “Demolition Driver” which finally and officially allows electricians to use a screwdriver for things other than driving screws. (We never did that before right?)

As for the non-contact testers, yes they are excellent, but are no substitute for a true tester and MUST be self checking or be checked on a known live circuit before use. Anyone who has done troubleshooting on an open neutral circuit knows the limitations of the n-c tester. A great timesaver, though, when used in skilled hands.

I’ve done some other projects in this very old house and the electrical wiring is full of surprises. I had an outlet behind my tv where I had all my electronics plugged into. Turns out the outlet was not grounded – and – the metal box was live. I learned this after a loud crack from my TV, PS3, cable modem, router, and laptop.

I’ll also be replacing a light socket in the equally old garage and adding a new outlet. I’m sure a tool like the Klein non-contact voltage tester would sure come in handy.

For future giveaways it would be nice to see a Klein MM5000 Electrician’s TRMS Multimeter. I’m sure I could find a use for that troubleshooting and upgrading the electrical system in this old house 🙂

I think this new Klein product is great and would be very handy in an industrial maintenance enviroment. If the flashlight is bright, I can see it being very helpful in those damned dark areas where tools always seem to wedge themselves. I also like the new Klein t handle hex keys and would like to see them in a giveaway.

Do I think this would be an upgrade from my current homemade testers, yes, so much so that I just added it to my want list ,and thank you for giving me a good gift idea for father’s day.

I’ve owned a dozen Klein NCV detectors. As a matter of fact my 24vac one is on my desk right now. My problem is I end up giving them away like candy. One of my guys will borrow it to do some quick testing and I’ll end up giving it to him because they aren’t sure how they lived without it. I’ve used ones from Fieldpiece, Greenline, and Ideal. But the Klein ones are more durable. I’ve seen a few of the LED flashlight models running around and it’s a great idea. It’s never bright enough where you find electrical problems.

I am a mechanical engineering student, and I build combat robots and props. I took a summer job last year working on aerospace quality electronics of a VERY expensive car in a small workshop in LA area. I needed to update my tools to something I could trust to work time after time.

I am SO happy with my Klien Katapult wire strippers. They worked perfectly for the many terminations that I needed to do, and work great for quick in the pits wiring action of the combat robots. I will continue to use them for many years, and will rebuy for sure. I already bought a pair as a gift! I wish to have more Klien in my bags!

I have roughly 10 hand klein tools and some going back when I was an electrical apprentice almost 17 years ago. I never made it out as an electrician but I still have them and currently use a few of them for my job at Ecolab. My favorite tool is the needle nose pliers and cutters. Always with me stuffed in my new Milwukeee tool back pack. This tester would be perfect when checking for live electricity as I am diagnosing commercial dishwashers and the light would be used to look inside to see what may be the problem…it would do two things in one. I think it would fit perfectly in my Ecolab lab coat.

I would love to win this voltage tester. I have a pair of Klein lineman’s pliers and I use them for all my needs around the house. While Klein tools are pricey, they are worth the extra cost. These are professional grade tools that are part of the family heirloom. I think that using this tester will guarantee that the results are accurate. I actually have a cheap one that is not always giving me accurate results, I’ve had a close call a few times because I had false information. Klein makes superior tools and I trust the products that they sell. I hope I win.

Turns out the dual range non contact voltage tester (ncvt-2) from klein isn’t impact resistant. Less than a month old and my baby is dead.
Now I’m waiting for this guy to come to Canada as it’s Klein or nothing and I need something a little more durable.
Orrrrr maybe Tool Guy can save me the wait?
Here’s a poem, just in case:

Oh why oh why hath my klein voltage tester died?
I can not count how many times it saved me from getting fried.

I love these little testers I had the klein one with flash light before and it worked great. I use them for when I am doing my fire inspections to check for live wires in open electric boxes and open wire splices. I should say I loved mine until my 4 and 2.5 year old got a hold of it the flashlight still works but the tester doesn’t seem to work anymore. I ended up with one from lowes to replace it but not a fan of it.

I need this because I feel bad taking back my NCVT-2 from my father after he borrowed it. He lost his non-contact voltage detector. I should have just let him keep it, but I took it back and gave him the $5 HF special, which is beyond awful: it’s insulting. While the NCVT-2 is great, and I would replace it in a heartbeat, I simply should have passed it on. Now I feel bad. The NCVT-3 would solve this situation, and it looks great!

Everything Klein makes is fantastic, however, I’m going to say my favorite tool is the tapping “screwdriver.” I rarely use it, but it just looks cool standing by all of the other screwdrivers.

For a giveaway, I would LOVE to see the newer “multi-bit tap tool driver” (cat. no. 32517) or the “drill tap tool kit” (cat. no. 32217). I’ve always wanted the latter, which another company made exclusively for quite some time, I believe. The former would be my #1 choice for a new screwdriver at the moment.

I recently did my first electrical repair on my house (installing a new ceiling fan), using borrowed tools and help. It took a few hours but went off without a hitch. Since then, my wife and I have a decided that we want to do some more electrical work, and I’ve been researching what to do as well as what tools to use. Currently, all I’ve got are some linesman pliers, so a voltage tester is #1 on the wish list.

    ‘Twas the night before Christmas
    And all through the house
    Not one light was working
    Couldn’t see my new mouse

Ah, but clipped to my pocket
    Right next to my pen
    Was my Klein voltage tester
    A gift from son Ken

So I turned on its flashlight
    And put on my sox
    Ran out to the backyard
    To the circuit breaker box

With my Klein in one hand
    I opened the cover
    Not very sure
    What I would discover

    But on the main breaker
    It was hard to believe
    Was a Gecko-like lizard
    That looked rather peeved

With the help of my Klein
    I coaxed him away
    Even though I’m quite sure
    He hoped he could stay

    I reset the breaker
    And the Klein came alive
    The electrical equivalent
    Of a high five

    Back inside I went
    Klein tool in hand
    Turned the outside lights on
    So Santa could land

Wow! Isn’t it great living in the 21st century. Technology keeps making tools better all the time. I have owned and tested almost every manufacturers non contact voltage tester. The new Klein NCVT-3 would certainly replace several of these units. I would no longer have to carry the low voltage non contact tester as it is already built into the new Klein NCVT-3. The built in flashlight would be handy when lurking into those scary attics spaces.

In my opinion, a non-contact detector is a must-have for any homeowner who decides to ever touch anything electrical. It’s better than health insurance…much cheaper, too.
Sure, you can use a multimeter, but then you need a separate flashlight / work light if you’ve (hopefully) cut the power, just so you can see the potentially hot wires you’re about to touch or brush against. Ever felt 240V? Not fun. Also, good luck doing lights or anything else overhead with a meter; you’ll need 3 hands.
We actually have a Fluke version of this at work. Love the fluke 87, so I thought the non-contact detector would be awesome…wasn’t impressed with the range (even touching a hot 240V conductor didn’t trip it head-on), and it didn’t have the little tab to insert into a socket (this one looks like it does?). Klein’s hand tools are solid, so I have no reason to believe this would have issues. Would love to have one.
