Over at Amazon, they have a good price on this Knipex 2pc Pliers Wrench tool set.
Okay, so it’s not a good price, it’s just a good price for these tools. You know what I mean, right? It’s how $20 for a maple board is a good price, except if you compare it to $5 for a pine board.

These are good tools, and they’re always going to be expensive, no matter how you look at it.
The question here is about whether or not this is a good deal, and if you should buy it. To that, I say “absolutely.”

Update: It appears that Walmart is price-matching Amazon.
By now, I would expect you to have several thoughts going through your head:

- I own these tools, and you’re right – they’re awesome and these are good prices
- Are you kidding? I can get like 20 [cheap brand] pliers for this amount of money
- Shh, I’m grabbing my credit card!!
- I own one of these sizes, but the deal is too good to pass up – in for one!
This is the holiday season, and you deserve to treat yourself to some good tools. I am strongly in favor of the Knipex Pliers wrench, and this is also a tool that took me several years to actually buy. The “they cost how much?!” reaction doesn’t go away, but the broad utility of these pliers make them worth it.
I couldn’t find the right voice for this post, and so a “you should absolutely buy it” stance seemed appropriate. Plus, it seems beneficial to help polarize you on this, with the goal of pushing anyone on the fence over to one side or the other. This could minimize the “you were right, but I passed on the deal and regret it” sentiments.
If this deal were to sell out in 5 minutes, would you regret not buying a set?

I spent $41 for my 7″ Knipex Pliers Wrench more than 10 years ago. Now, I can’t find them for less than $52.
I own several sizes of Knipex Pliers Wrenches, and I tend to use my 7-1/4″ size the most. I use my 10″ on occasion, and my 5″ might be the second-most used size.
The 5″ pliers has a very high price, and the lowest I can find it for right now is $47 and change, and it’s largely because of this that I feel the 2pc combo kit is a very good price. Not only is it a discounted price, it features the smaller size that many users are unlikely to buy.
If you need a larger tool, budgeting for the 10″ or 12″ is easier than budgeting for the 5″ that you might want and not really need.
I can’t tell you why, but hand tool pricing plays mind tricks on me. Let’s say a 16 oz hammer is a good price at $20. Now let’s say an 8oz hammer of the same style might be priced at $18. Half the weight/size for only 10% less? My mind lean towards “not a good deal.”
But here’s the thing – the smaller tool requires most if not all of same manufacturing steps, and only has less material. That doesn’t make it any easier to pony up a lot of cash for a smaller tool.
Let’s do some math.
- Knipex 8603125 5-Inch Mini Pliers Wrench: $48.95
- Knipex 8603180 7-Inch Pliers Wrench: $58.02
- Knipex 8605180 Pliers Wrench w/ Multi-Component Handle: $52.80
The lowest price for the 5″ and 7-1/4″ pliers right now is $101.75. Or, there’s the 2pc set for $72.85.
Let’s say you have a time machine and can go back in time to when I ordered my 7″ pliers for $41. Would the 5″ Pliers Wrench be a good deal at $32? Absolutely!
My Knipex Pliers Wrenches are among my most-frequently used tools, for fastening, gripping, and manipulating operations. When I have to squeeze things together, this is what I use. When I have to loosen some fasteners, this is what I use if I don’t think combination wrenches or sockets are necessary.
Straightening the metal on a shelving rack that arrives with shipping damage? Bending metal that I don’t want to be straight? Turning finished parts that I can’t use grooved haws on? Out comes the Pliers Wrench.
And, the tools’ designs make them very pocket-friendly. It’s not uncommon for me to slip my 7-1/4″ Pliers Wrench into a back pocket when working around my home or garage workshop. The 5″ is small enough to fit into a front pocket comfortably.

At this time, the set is expected to be in stock on December 25th, 2020, and so it probably won’t arrive before Christmas.
Update: It’s now backordered with a January 21, 2021 estimated ship date.
Side Note: So, a side effect of writing posts in a tone like this is that I now want to get in on the deal myself. I’ll give it a half hour, and if the pliers are still available for ordering, I’m in for one as well. *Ordered*

Or….. $14 for 10 inch standard (non push button lock) Alligator Pliers. Wont last long.

It looks like they are matching WalMart or vice versa on price

I’ve got the 10″ and the 5″. I love them both. When I find a deal (in Canada), I will absolutely buy the 6 and 7 inch versions. I use them often enough that overlap for the purpose of having just the right size seems fine with me.
The 5″ version is ideal for carrying in a pocket – even as an EDC item. I was doing that for a while. It can do more than you expect for such a diminutive tool.
The 10″ is also great. I really like that size for automotive and tractor repair, but it is a little large and heavy in some situations. The wider jaws can be handy for some crushing tasks though, and the leverage is good to have for larger fasteners.
I probably need the 7″ more than the 6″, but I kinda just want them all – even the “XL” ones that would probably be more novelty than necessity for me.

We bought our first Knipex Plier Wrenches 20 years ago. Passed them around to try out and all the plumbers wanted them. I bought my first pair (180mm and 250mm) for personal use in 2001.
They are now making a version with a slightly roughened jaw – interesting – but Amazon’s price seem high:

Luckily I waited to find a deal on the 5pc set. Friend had one and showed it to me, first thought was knipex makes gimmick tools, 3 seconds later I wanted a set.

I should have bought the 3 piece set years and years ago when i was working at a car stereo shop where the snap on tool guy came every monday
3 piece set was the 5 the 7 and the 10 he was selling them dirt cheap i want to say something like 45 bucks because he had just picked up the line to sell …. I kick my self in the ass every time i see these !

Just an FYI the 7 inch black finish ones are a touch cheaper at $48. I ordered them a couple weeks back and they’re stupid good.

I prefer the chrome finish for tools like this.
I bought a black oxide Channellock adjustable wrench because it was less expensive, but that taught me to just suck it up and pay a little more for the tool finish I want, and not just the cheaper one.
Travis
Amen, Stuart. I could not agree more. I don’t even understand the logic but I know what I like!
Dan
Thanks for being pushed over the fence on this! I’ve been stuck on that barb wire too long for this tool. Plus the 2-pack choice helped because I was hesitant on which size to get. Long time viewer, first time post.
Dave
I am not in the least “into” adjustable wrenches ( called Crescent wrenches here regardless of brand), water pump pliers (“Channellocks), or evening Knipex. But I do have some of each and use them occasionally but I certainly try not to depend on them.
Good tools cost money. Not stupid Snap-on robbery, but good money. If you’re into multi-purpose adjustable stuff, these are the real deal. Spend the money and move on. A cheap tool is always cheap. But a quality tool is quality forever, long after the price you paid is forgotten.

If you could only have one, which size would you get?
Stuart
7-1/4”.

Thanks Stuart!

I agree that the 180 is probably the most useful size – and I use it more than say the 250. But buying it on Amazon you pay $58+ (or $55 at HD) for it alone – so that’s what makes the combo deal at $72+ so attractive.
BTW this plier design and its execution by Knipex are almost addictive to use. I find myself often grabbing the 125 (5 inch).
BTW – I think the WalMart price has shot up.
King duck
Count me in the own them and love them category although I wish I had gotten them at a nice deal like this.
Adam
If didn’t own one of the sizes already from an already way too good of deal, I’d be contemplating.
I did grab a a set of the curved jaws with plastic inserts a couple weeks back, along with the extended pliers. I’ve added more Knipex the last 2 weeks, than the last year, maybe 2.

“Usually ships in 1-2 months” lol
Probably why Walmart price shot back up – but 🅰️mazon is still letting you order them.
Dominic
I purchased before the $71 Amazon deal, which is a great price. Tooltopia is offering the same set for $81. (And no mention of backorder until Jan). https://www.tooltopia.com/Knipex-KNI9K0080121US
Dominic
Forgot to mention. The 5 inch is the “old” version and the 7 1/2 inch, I received the “new” version. So the new version is rolling out to the 7 1/2 size now.
David
I bought the Gedore 10″ version 2 years ago during Black Friday at KCTool for $32. Now, this Knipex set will compliment the 10″ one. How come no one noticed this deal until now? It has been at $72.85 since Oct 14th. See: https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B01AY0JXPS

There’s also a Cobra and diagonal cutters deal: https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/knipex-pliers-cutters-tool-set-deal-amazon-black-friday-2020/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

Sometimes these promo bundles fly under everyone’s radar.

Isn’t there a slightly newer version with slimmer jaws? I think I was wanting in on those for the 5″ hmmmm…..
Joe
Amazon is at $90 something now.

I have this set, as well as the same set in the Cobra teeth version. I use them for tasks I would have never imagined. Such as flattening crinkled sheet metal tabs. They are an absolute pleasure to use. While life is so uncertain, these and the Cobra’s are certainly among the first tools. Yes, a tool that brings a smile to your face when you use it.
They make the Cobra in a thin head version, using the term water pump.
Peter Rudy
Sorry, “finest tools.”

Now $90.93 @ Amazon!
Stuart
That’s through a 3rd party seller. Amazon direct has it for $101.99.
Thanks! I’ll add an “expired” note to the title.
Koko The Talking Ape
Thank god it’s expired. I was hovering over the Buy button for hours.

I’ve bought mine at Menards, they don’t carry the 5″, but currently $46.89 for a 7 1/4″ and $49.87 for the 10″. They have them on sale somewhat regularly, or there is always their 11% rebate or 15% bag sale.
I wouldn’t have minded adding the 5″ to my bag though.
Dan Connors
Please let me know where I can get at $20 maple board and a $5 pine board.
Stuart
Home Depot.

I cringed when I clicked “Purchase” on the 10″ pliers wrench and now I use them all the time. If all you were every going to do was turn nuts and bolts they wouldn’t be all that remarkable but they shine as a versatile tool… not marring up the flats on a shower head or faucet aerator, straightening out sheet metal, I even used mine to remove an external snap ring on a gearbox shaft because they were all I had with me. Definitely one of those tools that seems overpriced until you use it.
