Kobalt 12V Max Power Tool Combo

Did you know that Lowes carried a line of Kobalt 12V Max cordless power tools? Me neither, and it doesn’t look like they plan to carry these tools for much longer.

Right now, and thru 5/13/2015, this 3pc combo kit is on sale for $50. Lowes says its regular price was $135.32. That seems like an odd price, so maybe this set was discounted a couple of times now.

According to an April 2014 deals site posting, this combo was on sale for $150 at the time, discounted from its then-regular price of $200.

The Kobalt 12V Max 3pc combo kit comes with a drill/driver, an impact driver, and a jigsaw. You also get (2) 1.5Ah Li-ion batteries, a charger, and a hard case. A full battery recharge cycle takes about 35 minutes.

Full specs and features don’t seem to be available online, but the jigsaw looks pretty interesting. It has an adjustable/pivoting head with 6 angular positions, allowing it to be used as a reciprocating saw or jigsaw, depending on direction of the blade and angle of the pivoting cutting head.

Here’s the catch: It doesn’t look like a lot of stores still have these combos in stock. Seems like this is more of a last chance clearance deal than a regular promo discount or sale. I checked, and all of the stores near any of the 5 zip codes I tried are reporting 0 inventory. And you can’t order it online for parcel shipping to your home either.

If you REALLY want this combo kit, and can’t find it at Lowes, there are several 3rd party resellers who are listing it for $108 to $115 on Amazon.

Thoughts

The convertible jigsaw reciprocating saw looks like a neat design. Pivot the head, switch the blade direction, and you get a versatile almost-does-it-all cordless saw. It’s probably not super-powerful, since it’s powered by a 12V Max Li-ion battery pack and not 18V. Still, that might be reason to splurge $50 on the whole kit.

I don’t like to post about tool deals that require a ton of legwork to take advantage of, but this is a special case. If I hadn’t posted about this deal, would you ever have known that these tools and a Kobalt 12V Max lineup ever existed?

I checked all the cities where I have family an none of them reported any stock. I’ve seen Lowes do this before with deep discounts. They pretty much require that you go to the store because they stop listing stock online. It’s worth it to give them a call at least.

As I read your post, I concluded that the recip saw would be the tool I’d most want from the deal. As that’s the only one you described, I assume you felt the same way. A 12V drill would be nice to have, though, for the reduced weight. Most of my drilling jobs could be accomplished using that rather than the bulkier 20V DeWalt drill I have.

I’m sure that the drill and impact are okay, but there is so little information about these tools that there was nothing really to say.

I’ve checked these before at my local Lowes on display and my only complaint is that the chuck on the drill doesn’t ratchet. But the drill has a really neat clutch setting like what you would find on a Fein or Festool cordless drill.

I seen Lowes do this before on their kobalt portable miter saw stand. On their website it showed that it was on sale for 79.00 and was originally 169.00. I checked at my local store and the manager said that they were discontinuing it. And the closest one available to me was 2 hours away and they couldn’t ship it to my house or another store.

Not available anywhere in my region. This is often the case with lowe’s and menard’s, too.

I’d say this would be a great little set for very light / occasional use at home. Putting together IKEA furniture, hanging pictures and maybe some heavier jobs, just not for any extended period of time. As my aunt says….for $50 for this set: it’s (and I’ll sy almost) too cheap not to buy.

I have this set, paid 150.00 for it on sale maybe a year ago. It’s never let me down, I can’t complain about it one bit. I also have the older 18 volt lithium ion kit (the ones that look like their new 20v kit), they too have given me no trouble.

The jig/reciprocating saw looks like a cool little tool. Can’t speak for the durability or quality but I handled it in the store and like the pivot action and would come in handy for small projects and like what was said earlier, this is perfect for the occasional home user.

I have a full set of the 12v Bosch and love them, they can take a serious beating which I’m sure these can’t but if you can find it $50, that’s pretty close to being free.

I have never owned any Kobalt tools, but for $50, how could you really go wrong? Unfortunately, I checked and there are none available in any of the stores in the LA area I could reasonably drive to.

Do not rely on Online Inventory!

When Lowe’s puts something on deep discount/closeout, you HAVE to go to the store to see what’s in stock. They make in-store inventory not visible to users of their web site.

I scored this kit at my local store for $33.xx, I got it solely because it was cheap, and I kinda wanted a light duty set to back up my PC 20v kit. I haven’t used it much but my son and I had to throw up some drywall, he used my PC impact and I used this and it held up pace, granted it was a small project and I most definitely will grab my 20v before this, but Im glad I have it in my tool stash now. On a strange side note the ergonomics are nearly identical to the Standley/BD(ie: PC Dewalt etc) line up as far as the grip shape is concerned, its very familiar feeling and I like that alot.

I can’t exactly remember the drill torque but think the package said 220, and the impact has printed on the side 800lbs. Not the best 12v numbers but for the price you cant go wrong.
