Hmmm, just watched this video. I was excited about this product, but not so much any more, Im not not digging the need to use two hands for the double drive part.

It’s really something that you have to try in person. I’m sure that “try me” displays will pop up at Lowes stores in a few weeks. Some will like it, others will love it, and some will hate it. What I like is that it can be used as a manual driver, as a ratcheting-like driver, or as a double-action driver.

If there’s going to be a version 2.0, maybe it will feature one-handed double driving action.

This is a very cool product. I like the double feature and also that it can be used as a standard ratchet screw driver. I am looking forward to buying one. Why buy the others when you can have the extra features that this driver has. No brainer.

Very cool concept, Stuart I see you mention a possible v2.0 with single hand two way ratchet mechanism. Do you know why they didn’t think of that before? Also I know you said its one of those things you have to just try for your self but I was wondering about its weight and feel and do you feel like it was a rushed product. (it might just be me, but the front end of the handle looks bulky)

I mentioned that IF there’s a version 2, the designers might try to build it with a one-handed mechanism if possible. Don’t hold your breath, though, the driver is actually well optimized and probably won’t see a significant revision for a long time if at all. Kobalt will benefit much more if their engineers instead focus on designing a completely different mass-appeal hand tool for next year’s Fall/Winter holiday shopping season.

I’m sure that they must have thought of ways to make the screwdriver even better, but I can see several obstacles that led Kobalt’s engineers to stop at the current design. Trying to implement an automatic mechanism that did not require two-handed operation, if even possible, could potentially increase costs substantially, result in excessive complexity, add to the tool’s size/bulk. This is all of course assuming that there are no mechanical challenges to overcome.

This is by no means a rushed tool, it feels complete and very well designed. Last year’s Multi-Drive wrench also looked complete and well thought out as well.

The driver is a bit front-heavy, with the center of mass at about where the user would hold onto the blue collar. It is slightly awkward to operate the driver with two hands, but the speed advantage makes up for this unless high precision or torque is needed. The handle is plastic and mostly hollow, but some users will likely fill it with screwdriver bits for a more compact on-the-go package.

I would love to try the new Lowes ratcheting screwdriver. I like to keep a versatile tool like this in my desk at work. It’s surprising how often a tool like this can be used even if you have a desk job.

A small company Spec Tools makes a patented two speed smooth clutching driver on this idea called Overdriver that provides 4 times speed when you hold the speed knob. Had one for years. Great for long loose screws.

It is a cool tool, I purchased four tools, But I was upset when I went to low’es and found out the driver did not come with the bonus holster as shown on tv. I think Low’es should supply this tool as the tv add said.

I have it. Not impressed. very bulky and too long to use in many home maintenance applications. This will end up a junk drawer item. It is unfortunate. It is a cool concept.

I picked this up in November when they offered free shipping and the free holster. Had to exchange in December as the gears jammed. Lowes ‘No Hassle’ Returns/Refunds/Exchange polict was a PIA. Since they stores didn’t carry the item w/ holster they wanted me to mail the return. After 30 minutes, I finally left the line, grabbed the last one in stock (they were very popular holiday gifts) and went back to ‘Customer Service’ and argued my way into an exchange. Finally got around to using it again today when I went to replace a washing machine motor coupling. Gears seemed rough. And now I lost the cap to the in-handle storage area. Which makes using this pretty uncomfortable. Overall, not pleased. Nice idea, but poor execution and quality control.

Yeah, the gears in mine jammed too. Right now I can’t even switch the thing from “unscrew” to “screw”. So, suffice it to say that I think the design needs some refinement. Right now, I’d consider these a $20 mistake…
