The Rev is a pretty lousy tool. The pliers are poorly finished. Walmart sales a multi tool branded “Ozark Trail” that has scissors and a full size bit driver that is better than the rev in every aspect. It’s $40 not on sale. There are some Chinese made multi tools sold under various brands on Amazon and eBay that are decent even compared to the Leatherman wave that sale for around $20-$40. Leatherman makes some great tools that a worth a premium price but there “starter” tools are overpriced IMO.

The suggested $40 alternatives are not very similar to the Rev, since all of them lack pliers (and one is just a pocket knife.) I’d suggest the Gerber Suspension NXT, which lists for $50 but happens to be on sale right now for $28. It’s maybe a bit bigger than the Rev but all the tools lock.

The Gerber Suspension is a fantastic beginner/entry/backup tool as well. I bought one prior to my first Leatherman. It remains a solid recommendation.
My mind drew a blank and I couldn’t think of a single sub-$50 multi-tool I’d recommend instead, and so I thought to provide alternatives for gift shoppers.

I was going to suggest the Wingman and the Sidekick, but their price must’ve gone up in recent years. That or my memory is slipping. I thought they were about $50 but I guess not.

Leatherman prices went up a lot these past few years. I asked them if this is why some tools – most notably the Micra – are only available on their website not, but nobody got back to me.
The Rev was supposed to be the more affordable version of the Wingman and Sidekick after those two tools went up in price a bit.
I think this is always why we now have the Bond and Curl, and tools like the Costco-exclusive Bolster.

I wouldn’t spend $30 on a Rev. I would consider it for $20.
Not sure what is going on with Leatherman the past few years, but the prices just keep getting more and more ridiculous – it seems like they are going up faster than housing and groceries! Each tool seems to have jumped in price to the next tier of tools.

Prices must have really increased for the Rev to be on sale for $40. I definitely bought my Wingman for closer to $30. I really like it, although the bottle opener is terrible.

I am on Leatherman FB sites and its a great hobby but expensive as heck at 100+ for the better tools out there. I got my fill with a Wave+, Skeletool CX and Charge TTi just to experience one of the best tools L-man has come out with. After you go heavy its hard to dial it back to one one of the $40 tools. At this price point I’d get a Gerber Suspension with more features. So my advice people – get it out of your system and get a Wave+ or better. If you want to go compact get at Skeletool. If you work in a trade or wrench for a living get a Surge. Get it over with – you cant go wrong with the ones I mentioned….and move on…LOL.
