Lowes’ Black Friday 2017 adscan has made it to the web, and as usual, we filtered out the tool deals for easier discussion and reference.

As has happened in the past, Lowes Black Friday deals will go live online on Thanksgiving this year, and you might even be able to catch them a little earlier, such as Wednesday night. Except maybe the doorbusters.

Unless otherwise noted, the deals are valid 11/23 thru 11/29.

    I still remember the deals like 59.00 B&D table saw and miter saws, lots of 70% off small tool sets and 4.00 small appliances. Seems allot of the stuff in Lowes Black Friday add is at the same price it is right now. I do think the 39.00 shop vac is a good deal (just like last year) Seems like Hope Depot had allot better deals last year, but maybe it’s just me. lol

      I remember the $49 10″ Skil Miter and Table saws because I got one the second year they did it – plus I used a coupon to get it for just over $40. The next year they were $59 on BF and the year after that it was Hitachi and then Kobalt saws for a lot more.
      
      Some of the ok deals have stayed the same, but yeah, the really hot deals went up in price until they went away completely.

  In terms of trigger clamps? Dewalt or Irwin clamps that cost more than $15 each.
  
  I bought the Dewalt $35 4-clamp set last year, and it comes with 2 better clamps and 2 somewhat clunky ones.
  
  Here’s an observational generalization that might not always be true: Better clamps have reversibly heads that allows the clamps to be used in clamping or “spreader” configurations.

  Not all clamps that look alike perform equally. Price my not always be the determining factor – but some cheaper clamps that I’ve tried tend to slip a bit as you apply pressure. I’ve found this true for both Quick style clamps and for some F-Style clamps. If you want Irwin Quick Grips – I’d recommend you look at their XP line.
  
  For parallel jaw clamps – the December/January issue of Wood Magazine – just rated the Bessey K-Body Revo as their top pick – with Irwin and Jet a bit lower down in their tests. they also tested ones from Peachtree that they rated as “best value”

  The chests and cabinets are priced separately. I tried to emphasize that when listing the deals out. The red one is $500, and the black and blue one over $1000.
  
  BUT, that being said, it looks like they’ve redesigned their tool storage lineup. The red one looks to be a copy of something Craftsman offered, and is also built in the USA.

      And that’s why I’m spending my Sunday morning and early afternoon going through the flyer and writing out each tool deal one by one. =)
      
      With Home Depot I did it because the images had to come down, but I also remembered what I liked about doing so.

Just fyi. I really like the kobalt bit cases. each row of the case flips out to easily access bits.
they lock the bits in place when folded flat.
I have quite a few Of The dewalt ones and kobalt are much easier to remove and replace bits. Also holds more in same space. the outer case seems a bit flimsier. Haven’t abused the bits enough to comment on those.

Ive Got One Of These 50 Pc Sets And Like The Usable Assortment for General Maintenance- Appliances, hvac, Light Construction, Appliances, fixtures, light electrical. Not impact rated though.

My primary edc tool is the m12 screwdriver (2401-20) and with this set im covered for 90% of what I do.

    I was expecting that one. They price it where it makes a good gift for someone just starting out with multi tools. I imagine skeletool may be added in at some point. Wish they would extend the list.

The Kobalt 6 piece set, while not many pieces like the other brands, is astonishingly low at $269! They’ve recently added an oscillating tool and flood lamp. I’m a home owner DIYer and I like quality equipment. With the low cost batteries and incredible warranty, this is a deal.

Would buy three or four of the werner work platforms at that price but they sell out fast. They are a lifesaver working on semis.

The $169 Bosch 12V drill & driver set was on sale back on Father’s Day for $99, when I picked it up. I find myself using it more and more, and can recommend it.

  I am still using mine from when they were originally released as 10.8v models. I am even still using the batteries. Don’t ask them to do what 18v tools are designed to do, and these are extremely handy.

I just noticed this cordless wet/dry vac is available (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-6-Gal-Wet-Dry-Vacuum-P770/302775352), although i think i did read some comments lamenting the disappearance of a previous model. Might be worth a mention?

I’ve actually been looking at routers this weekend. In spite of some construction tools and work, i’ve not gotten into woodworking before. Is there anything important i miss out on with that Kobalt router and table combination?

  I really didn’t want to, and it took a lot longer than Home Depot’s, but it helped reveal a few things. Some of the Dremel deals, for example, are really good – better than I remembered, and the Dewalt 4- and 6-tool combo kits are questionable due to their compact battery packs.
  
  That Ryobi vac is new to me, I’ll look into it. I have a couple of DOZEN posts in the queue based on what I saw this past week, but I’ll try to work it in.
  
  Regarding the router… cheaper router tables have less standard miter gauge slots, their plates and table surfaces might not be perfectly flat, and included routers might be weak or limited.
  
  My first combo was my Bosch-made Craftsman, with a Ryobi $99 or thereabouts router table.
  
  It might be worth learning a few things on an inexpensive router combo, but it depends on what you see yourself working on in the next few months, year, few years.
  
  With this combo, you will probably want to upgrade both the router and router table in time.
  
  It’s hard to say what’s best without knowing how you would use it.
  
  I would also encourage you to look at the Craftsman bundle, but that table looks to lack some of the features of this one. It looks to be made by the same company, and the router likely too, but especially for the cheaper price point.

    The review i saw of the Ryobi wet/dry vac makes it seem pretty nifty. I like that there’s specifically a place to store the hose outside of the tank itself. It’s a nitpick but the Black Friday vac i picked up at HD last year for an emergency job can’t do that, although it was cheaper and everything can be stored inside. It’s too bad that Ryobi didn’t make it a hybrid unit.
    
    Here’s my research on the router so far in case it helps anyone else. The lack of reviews of the Kobalt special puts me off, but i did find that it’s clearly made by the same OEM that makes this one that Lowes sells:
    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Blue-Hawk-x-Adjustable-Router-Table/50274831, and has most (all?) of the same body, frame and accessory pieces. That unit has mixed reviews, but it sounds like some of the issues may have been addressed in a revision. The Kobalt unit is described as having a higher-draw motor (12 amps vs 11 amps), but the same speed (25,000 rpm), so i don’t know if that’s just “marketing inflation”, a less efficient motor, or a real difference in power. The specifications page for the two products are so different that it’s hard to tell what else they may have changed.
    
    I took at the look at the Craftsman set mentioned. Presumably this http://www.sears.com/craftsman-router-table/p-00937599000P, even though the last couple digits of the model number are different. For $90 you get the same table (unless there are subtle differences i am unable to see due to lack of experience with router tables) and a lower-power 9.5 amp router, which is described has having a slightly higher speed (27000 rpm vs 25000 for the two above). It’d already available at the “special” Black Friday price, but it’s from Sears, so that’s probably not too surprising.
    
    None of these three similar options include variable speed control or a plunge base option afaik.
    
    The table is available without the router for $63 (http://www.sears.com/craftsman-router-table/p-00937599000P).

      The Blue Hawk and Craftsman router tables look to have an MDF top, and the Kobalt aluminum.
      
      The Craftsman has a lesser fence, with the Blue Hawk and Kobalt having greater adjustability for the feather boards.
      
      An MDF top might be flatter than aluminum, depending on how well they’re made.
      
      Personally, I wouldn’t buy any of these. There are too many compromises and potential limitations. But this mentality held me back for a while until I was able to score a good router on a discount.
      
      The Ryobi router table I paired with it was still limited and in some ways cheap, but it was also larger and had some more features.

        Thanks for the analysis. I appreciate your candor and will probably wait on this too. I think what i’ll focus on is getting a decent router and then see how much i tend to use it and whether i miss what a table has to offer. I’ve been approximating routing with drill bits and oscillating multitool blades for too long.

        I’ve always had a headache trying to figure out which router table to upgrade to.
        
        I had Bosch on my radar, read complaints, turned my attention to Bench Dog, went back to pining for Bosch, and considered lots of alternatives for a long time.
        
        I eventually went with Woodpeckers. Once I gain more time in a few weeks, I’m going to push it through a couple of projects that have been waiting for it.

The $39.98 Porter+Cable circular saw deal is listed as – Skil corded circular saw: $40.

Too bad it isn’t a Skil deal.

I guess I’ll be getting the 3000-series Dremel with the flex shaft, since the lowest the flex shaft goes by itself is $25 on sale, about the same as Amazon. I already have the 4000 series kit with everything, but I guess having another Dremel for slightly more will be worth it.

The 21-pc drill bit sets from Skil and Bosch are great, too. They’re the good kind with just the most common sizes and large bits up to 1/2″, not just small sizes and filler in-between sizes that don’t get used much. I actually think the Skil 21-pc set is the same gold-colored bits Bosch sold as their 21-pc set before they went to Black Oxide. I have both the Skil 21-pc and the Bosch gold-color 21-pc and swear they look like the exact same thing.

The 299 table saw from Hitachi with stand seems like a good deal! Anyone have any experience? I was eyeing the DWE7491, specifically because everyone raves about the fence, but this is a $200 swing.

  I think the Hitachi saw has a rack and pinion fence like the DeWalt. If it takes a Dado stack it’s probably a great buy, but I haven’t seen any reviews on it.

  I had planned on buying the Hitachi Table saw on Father’s day this year, but Lowes was out of stock online and in the store and I was furious! It was going for $379 then, so this is a great deal! I ended up buying the Kobalt which has been pretty decent. It has a similar rack and pinion system similar to the Dewalt. It’s nice to be able to square and lock down the fence and not have to move it anymore. I will say though if I still had my choice, I would go for the Hitachi.

Anyone used the Bosch Colt router? How is it? A good deal?

  The Colt was the successor for the Bosch 16086. Both were de-facto industry standards for their time. We had several Colts and used them often for laminate trimming on the jobsite. They were not perfect in terms of setting and holding depth – but they got the job done. They also offer several different bases for things like underscribing and offset trimming. In the shop – we more often used dedicated trimmers etc. from Betterley – mostly based on Porter Cable routers – although Betterley also sells a Colt based product.
  
  The Colt is underpowered for use as a general purpose router. Stuart has posted about a new version from Bosch which will up the power a bit – but its still mainly a trimmer.
  
  There are other compact routers you might wish to compare to the Colt. The corded Dewalt DWP611k kit (there is a lesser PC version too) is rather appealing, or there are cordless trimmers like the Makita XTR01T7 kit, and ones from Ridgid and Ryobi as well.

    Colt isn’t a shop router, but it’s the best jobsite router. I have 5 routers or so, up to festool, and the colt gets used more than the rest combined. Mainly because we use it for doors and trimming.
    
    An M18 Fuel equivalent would be outstanding. I’ve never loved the colt adjustment. And I changed to a clear base.

I know you are not a fan of the Tstak storage unit but Lowe’s also has the Stanley branded version of the Dewalt Tstak tower on Black Friday sale for just $59. That’s the regular price of just the base rolling cart.

Well i ended up spending most of my black friday trying on clothes with the Ms. so my only tool purchase ON black friday is the Kobalt 50′ laser measuring tool for $20 (seemed a better deal than the 33′ Bosch one on sale at HD). The backlit display on this is fantastic, and it seems pretty nifty. No regrets.

It’s the first time i’ve been inside a Lowes around black friday, and it was very poorly handled (imo). In HD you can clearly identify what things are on a special promotion, and it’s not too hard to find anything on the flyer. Maybe other Lowes are different, but the tags on the BF deals in this one were not eye-catching or even different than the other tags as far is i could see (seriously, i had to compare SKU #s to even verify i had the right products), and the promotional products were scattered all over the store in random nooks and crannies. The parking lot of the HD i passed was overflowing, while the Lowes was maybe 2/3 full. Lowes needs to step it up if they value BF as a promotional event.
