I Think Lowe’s is Botching ToughBuilt StackTech

Lowes StackTech 4-Wheel Dolly

I’m a fan of the new ToughBuilt StackTech modular tool box system, with one significant caveat – it’s only available at Lowe’s.

I ordered a couple of StackTech crates at the end of the holiday shopping season, following hands-on testing of the first wave of products.

Lowe’s shipped everything individually, in ToughBuilt’s original and very sturdy packaging. I wasn’t disappointed, which is saying a lot when it comes to Lowe’s.

I went with Milwaukee Packout, and invested heavily in drawer tool boxes this past holiday season. Still, I was anticipating trying out ToughBuilt’s drawers as well.

My Lowe’s store had 2 StackTech drawer boxes on the top shelf, but good luck finding a worker. The price then went up shortly after they launched. From what I’ve seen, Lowe’s increased ALL StackTech prices after the start of the year.

Fine, I can hold off on drawers – I’ll check back in November to see what kinds of promos Lowe’s offers again.

But I need a dolly or two, and I needed it months ago.

I’m not using the crates I purchased at their full utility yet, because I can’t get a compatible cart. In the meantime, I’ve been using a spare Packout dolly.

I won’t even consider getting the ToughBuilt Stacktech drawer tool boxes at any price if I can’t put them on a 4-wheel cart. And no, I’m not about to build my own. If I have the time for a DIY route, I wouldn’t be buying plastic tool boxes in the first place.

I checked again today, and Lowe’s website turned up empty. Were my keywords wrong? Dolly? No. Cart? No. Base? No.

Via a Google, a listing comes up and… out of stock.

Let me check with the model number (TB-B1-T-10), as Lowe’s sometimes has duplicate listings for ToughBuilt products.

Lowes StackTech 4-Wheel Dolly No Longer Available

“This item is no longer sold on Lowes.com” – I’m guessing this was the placeholder page.

ToughBuilt started advertising the 4-wheel cart 2 months ago.

It’s not online, and not in stores.

Maybe it was available in stores, but not at mine the few times I checked.

When ToughBuilt announced the StackTech line, critics said it was nothing more than a bunch of computer renderings. More than one industry insider was skeptical that ToughBuilt could or would pull it off.

But they did.

ToughBuilt pulled off a successful introductory launch, and has since started shipping accessories and the second wave of products.

In the past 6 months, ToughBuilt went from being a soft storage and growing hand tool brand, to a high-interest modular tool box brand.

I’m ready to spend more, but Lowe’s has proven to be a major obstacle.

I haven’t checked with the ToughBuilt team, but it would be moot to do so. ToughBuilt has built an excellent and capable team that knows what they’re doing.

Any brand can throw out a bunch of computer renderings of tool storage products. ToughBuilt’s timeline and roadmap was ambitious, and they’re pulling it off.

But Lowe’s…

Whether online or in-store, I can count on them to disappoint me.

Lowe’s did such a great job with Klein’s ModBox storage system, with respect to visibility, and their sales pricing has been extended to May 1st. Flex StackPack products look to have been purged from all nearby Lowe’s stores.

My Lowe’s store had a nice looking display of core StackTech products, but not what I need or am interested in.

I am extremely preferential about tool storage and organizational products. If I were considering these products as a primary storage solution, I would have already decided on a competing system.

An ETA at Lowe’s would give me more confidence in availability.

According to ToughBuilt’s roadmap, here’s what will be available in Spring 2024:

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Spring 2024 Products

A lot of these items launched, with some harder to find than others – such as the 4-wheel cart.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Box System Summer 2024 First Look

More are expected to be available by this summer.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage Accessories Expansion 2024

Accessories are also on the way.

I’m still very excited about the ToughBuilt StackTech line, including a couple of things they’re working on that haven’t been shared publicly yet.

Maybe others’ Lowe’s experiences have been different. Maybe things will smooth out once everything is launched and ToughBuilt and Lowe’s balance in-store and warehouse inventory allocations.

ToughBuilt has done a remarkable job so far, in my opinion. But Lowe’s? I think they’re botching things. For such a large retailer, they could and should be doing better.

Interesting. I suppose it really does vary by the store. I was in my local Lowes on Saturday and not only did they have the stack tech dolly in stock, but they had , the hand truck/four wheel dolly and the trailer hitch mounted carrier. They also had stack tech drawers in multiple configurations. I haven’t been tracking the prices because really I’m not willing to dump all of my Ridgid boxes and start over.
Surprisingly, Lowes had a pretty good selection of Flex boxes as well. That said, the Flex tool aisle may as well have had tumbleweeds and buzzards.
    Go figure.

I can’t agree more about how Lowe’s is. They have great product lines that are in my opinion top tier (FLEX & StachTech) but doing nothing to push them. I believe the reason is because of money. KLEIN came into Lowe’s recently and has everything you can think of on their shelves and we all know how much KLEIN makes in a year. As far as CRAFTSMAN & KOBALT are it’s their store brands and of course they’ll push those more because of in house ownership.

    Cosigned.

Stacktech seems like the modular box system I’ve been waiting for but I’m still hesitant to buy in until I can ensure I’ll be able to order the advertised components readily. The castered Rolling Box Mount you’re talking about is also something that I’ve been stalking on lowes.com for a month now to no avail.

It doesn’t seem like ToughtBuilt is the problem here as I keep seeing influencers get served up entire kits including the hard to find components from TB themselves.

Today I went into my local Lowe’s to pick up something I changed my mind on yesterday. What did I see, nothing!!! Everything was gone and a worker was stocking the freshly moved Klein display. I asked him what happened to all the TB items and he said his manager told him it is going on clearance and to put it in top stock until further notice. Something is going on with Lowe’s and TB.

Frustrating. It’s sporatic and nonsensical what the carry. Home town has had 5 items for a while. Random cooler shows up recently.. . And then gone. The accessories are non existent. 45 miles south at a store in a town half the size… They have a totally different combo of… 5 items. The cliptech “hubs” and all other side attachments that were the biggest sell for me… Not available. Huge fail for all. Including me… Purchased crates, drawers and boxes that may or may not ever be at the full potential I was hoping. I think toughbuilt should offer direct order. Missing an opportunity.

So knowing Lowe’s the way most of us do I do think that they likely share a portion of the blame here but I think we would be remiss to not question how much of the blame here may actually lie with ToughBuilt.

Have they “technically” hit a their marks in terms of rolling out the product line? Yes. But are they able to do it at scale the way a company like Milwaukee / Dewalt is able to? That’s where I begin to question how much of this is Lowe’s “failing” to properly acquire the product vs. ToughBuilt “technically” meeting their goal but not at the volume needed.

Good points. Klein went all-in with Lowe’s, to set up and negotiate a massive amount of dedicated floor space for the mod box line.

It reminds me that the only other 2 dedicated floor space systems I’ve seen have been Milwaukee’s packout and Ryobi.

I was so excited about this system, and skeptical at the same time. In person they’re too heavy and the drawers aren’t very wide for what I wanted to put in them ( hammers, pry bars, misc longer handle screwdrivers etc.)

The chamfered box corners make for a more narrow drawer and the metal corner plates seem to add extra weight for the un-needed corner accessories.

Stachtech is still at the top of my list regardless.

Lowe’s opened a store up here in Nanaimo. I took a look a couple of times; almost totally devoid of people, poorly laid out, nothing interesting on offer. It lasted maybe a year?
Closed. Location taken over by Rona (bit of an unfortunate name these days!) and it looks just the same. Wonder how long it will last…

Things are often out of stock and sometimes they even claim that they are in the store but nobody cares to find them. HD is far from perfect but Lowes does their level best to make them look great!

I actually enjoy going to Lowes. It’s never crowded and I can pick up a bunch of their closeout deals. Really a win-win.

On a seperate note, the Lowes near me really is honestly, a ghost town most of the time, that might be because of the unfortunate location of the local Home Depot, which is about 3 minutes down the road, and significantly busier.

The Lowes in my town has a great location, but I almost always drive 5 minutes past it to get to Home Depot. Better staffing, easier to find things, etc. If Home Depot doesn’t have what I need, than I’ll hit up Lowe’s on the way home.

On one recent visit, half the lights were out. I found someone to ask about it and he said they got lower electrical bills if they shut off half the lights during peak demand. It made the experience of being at Lowe’s even less pleasant than normal.

I have not gone hunting for StackTech products specifically at my local Lowe’s but I can say that I have seen relatively little of the line on display just walking around the store. I don’t think they have very many SKUs on hand, or if they do they are located out of the way.
I hope that changes, I’m interested in a few of their items slated for release this year.

    It is Lowes-
Similar experience with Grabo portable battery powered vacuum lifter. I notice that the local Lowes had these in stock so went to check it out, Used the Lowes app to locate it in the drywall section, but it was nowhere to be seen. I asked an employee for help and he noticed a diplay model halfway down the aisle with no charge left on the battery. Then he noticed a Grabo box on the top tier and went to get a ladder. I ended up buying one but was not impressed with Lowes’ performance. Staff is friendly but they are disorganized over all. Grabo is a cool tool, impressive that it is not limited to glass and tile but will work on slightly porous stuff to, like drywall and plywood.

Lowes has been self-sabotaging. I ordered a flex stack pack unit for a personal test sample at the beginning of a sale; then decided to order 10 more pieces but couldn’t find all the pieces. Then Lowes ended the sale several weeks prematurely. I ended up investing in the Ridgid system.

Many other instances of trying to buy a product there only to find it discontinued without any notice or unavailable for shipping even when it is a small item widely available in stores.

You’re lucky to have any of it at all, I’d love to get my hands on ANYTHING StackTech, but it’s not even sold up here in Canadian market. Lots of pouches, bags, and a smattering of the hand tools, but not a single modular tool box or any of the related accessories to be found.

Lowe’s bought our homegrown big-box chain Rona back in 2016 (for $3.2 Billion), and ran both chains but has since closed ALL their Lowe’s Canadian stores, rebranding them under the Rona flag. So lord knows when (or even if) StackTech will arrive here.

It’s interesting to me that (locally, anyway) Lowes has done such a good job of allocating space and visibility to Klein, and almost equally to Craftsman, but Flex and ToughBuilt seem like an afterthought. Which I personally hate because I was/am the most excited about the TB offerings. What they’ve done with Klein and CM shows what they are capable of so I’m just scratching my head why the others aren’t getting any love. Last time I was in, I was also surprised that the TB soft items (tool belts, pouches) had all but vanished. Ugh

My Lowes is terrible. I was excited about Stacktech when it came out, and went to the store as soon as I saw they had them in stock. Listed location on floor on website… but… it wasn’t there. Was up on the highest shelf in a box. Ok, fine. I’m not going to have someone come pull it for me to check it out. I’ll come back later – except for the next 2-3 weeks, it remained up there. Finally saw it move online to another location, but when I went in, it was STILL on a shelf, although a different shelf. Finally asked someone to take it down and unbox it to check it out.

Currently Lowes shows some items unavailable at the store, and not available for delivery- though going into the store I can literally see that they have some of the drawer systems they say they are out of. Botching this is an understatement, they’ve been totally jerking toughbuilt around, at least at my location. I’d be pissed if I were toughbuilt and my retailer was treating me like this. If they got into Home Depot, I”m sure they’d sell – but not sure HD is looking to take on another tool storage system line. It’s sad, but I’m biding my time waiting for the 4 drawer to come out before I invest, just to make sure Lowes doesn’t sink the product line for them.

As soon as I saw Lowe’s was a key part of this I thought to myself “well crap that is going to be an issue” and it’s all going how I thought. I do not want to see such a good system/product hurt by relying on that company. It’s a shame ToughBuilt doesn’t have much choice when it comes to a nationwide retailer. Stores like Ace Hardware, Blaine’s Farm and Fleet, Northern Tool and Equipment or other comparable chains might be the only option but they don’t have a ton of space for a whole line of the products. It could be hard to get chains like this across the country to take on such a large line of products, if they already have other systems too.

I know this blog post is more about other things, but I Stuart made this remark that I wanted to touch on:

“Lowe’s shipped everything individually, in ToughBuilt’s original and very sturdy packaging. I wasn’t disappointed, which is saying a lot when it comes to Lowe’s.”

I’m seeing more and more of this. Sometimes a product’s packaging is sufficient for shipping, but other times it is not. The seller / shipper should be clue’d in enough to know when something needs an additional box or shipping protection, but often, especially in today’s age of Free Shipping, adequate packaging is not even a thought. If it arrives damaged, we’ll just ship out a new one. What a waste. We recently had this experience with Target breaking glass in multiple shipments because they weren’t putting any protection around the item, just a couple of air bags in the box with the bare glass items!

After waiting 4 months for a supplier to get stock of a replacement factory wheel for my wife’s Euro SUV, they sent it in just the thin factory wheel box. I wouldn’t even call this single wall cardboard, as it had perforations ins at the corners to make it easier to fold to shape! The wheel in the box had some additional protection the face of the wheel, but the rear lip of the wheel was chewed up due to an inappropriate shipping box that lacked! The wheel is a forged 20″ wheel made by Fuchs in Germany, dealer cost is $3100. You’d think they wouldn’t want to ship another one at their expensive, because there is no way UPS insurance is covering the damage on this when it lacked adequate packaging! I even paid for shipping on this wheel.

That said, I’ve received Milwaukee PackOut drawers in their original Milwaukee boxes, and they arrived completely fine. But these are reasonably lightweight, plastic and I recall the Milwaukee boxes being reasonably thick walled (certainly more so than the aforementioned wheel box!).

Free / low cost shipping shouldn’t mean careless or inadequate shipping. But it seems that is where we’re at now.

My local Lowe’s showed all items available at launch in stock with 5 or more available in store. Every time I went in to get a hands on look at them fully intending to pull the trigger and make the purchase there was nothing on display anywhere. I’d ask an employee and show them the listings that they were in stock and ask where the listed bay was located. It was located in the back where they unload the trucks. On 3 different occasions I waited 30-45 minutes for the employee to return with the products just to walk out without a peek at any of it. Once the introductory sale ended they put it all on display.

Many Lowe’s in upstate NY have wildly varied product assortments of all their “new” brands. It is strange as a shopper, and seems even more strange when looking at it from a marketing angle.
I’ve looked in about 10 different Lowes stores from Newburgh to Queensbury ( about 150 miles apart) and they all have various quantities and assortments.
Most reset their tool depts to have a much more varied mix of storage and organization (Klein, Kobalt Casestack, CM Tough stack, ToughBuilt, Flex, etc.)
Most added these new planograms following the holidays. But some stores have half as much as others of a certain brand. Some eliminated some existing SKUs in Kobalt and Craftsman to add Flex and TB. Some don’t have Kobalt. Some don’t have Flex. Some have entire Flex sections on clearance. Some have Craftsman on clearance. Some have all or most Kobalt CS on clearance.
How do they do that and not annoy the customer base, AND promote new products when they are already on their way out? Makes little sense to me.
But on the bright side hitting all these different stores got me some good deals, and I got a Flexstack 3-drawer AND a Flex bin (toolbox) for less than $90 total…which was a pretty epic score…but still weird as a whole.

This is not a surprise. Lowe’s does not understand Product and they are not the destination for brand creation.

THD does it right. Klein, EGO, Packout…even those Gator Magnet Hook products, they all benefited from the platform THD provides.

Name one category leader product brand that became relevant because they were launched at Lowe’s vs The Home Depot.

This would have been a different story for stacktech if it was merchandised and supported at THD. I speculate privately the folks at toughbuilt feel the same way.

Isn’t this supposed to revolutionize the stack market Stuart? It’s not lowes, it’s the oversaturation of the market. Nothing revolutionary either, most people are already heavily invested in a platform, the other established players can also rapidly respond. Lowes is also a business with multiple contracts, the blame is on though built, why choose the homeowners retailer? Why no direct sales? Why not have multiple retailers? Are you 100% sure it’s lowes , that is sabotaging the brand?

It’s definitely Lowes. Reading all the other comments, almost everybody is ambivalent, or negative towards Lowes. Clearly it’s something Lowes themselves is doing wrong.

Placing the blame on Toughbuilt may be fair to be honest, but I imagine that Lowes must have cut them a compelling deal, or perhaps Home Depot wasn’t interested in carrying product manufactured by a literal penny stock company (for real, look them up, TBLT).

The more likely answer is that Toughbuilt wanted a national retailer, and Home Depot already carries Dewalt, Stanley, Husky, Milwaukee, Rigid, and Ryobi for modular toolbox offerings. Menards would have been an excellent pick as their tool selection is pretty pitiful, but they’re not a national retailer.

Absolutely true. But the important underlying question is why doesn’t Lowe’s have product on the shelf? Is this because Toughbuilt can’t keep up production and they are perpetually back-ordered? Or is this because Lowes chooses to devote little floor space to Toughbuilt? If it’s the latter then Lowe’s is shooting themselves in the foot here. No matter how good a new product is, if you don’t promote it correctly it will never succeed.

I just confirmed online that a few items are still unavailable for sale from Lowe’s: the 4-wheel cart, the aluminum hand truck, the cargo tray, and the 38-quart XL cooler. More surprising, the XL 3-drawer toolbox is sold out of my local store and only one is available nearby (I am in Chicagoland).

I start at the ToughBuilt catalog on their own website, and it takes me to Lowe’s website and my local store.

Finally, I cannot wait for the C700 sawhorses to return to Lowe’s and Home Depot because I have some interior doors to sand.

Pretty sure toughbuilt is counting the hours till the Lowe’s exclusive rights end ( July), I’ve started getting into line with all the clearance stuff. But agree Lowe’s is messing this up. Local shows out of stock for most things but is stocked in person. Went to order 2 (3) drawer boxes was limited to one for some reason, and the wanted $70 to ship!!! Get real!

Crazy. They just shipped 2 of the single drawer boxes to my house for free. They never seemed to have any in store. If Stacktech is going to ditch Lowe’s, I hope there is somewhere local that I can get them. They have suited my needs quite well so far. Are they perfect? No way. Do they make it possible to customize my tool storage in the work rigs? Yes, indeed.

My guess is that the opposite is true, that ToughBuilt was conserving cash required to cover the time between paying their suppliers and being paid by Lowe’s. Same thing with global availability of StackTech being delayed.

That working capital gap, say 60 days, would require ToughBuilt to outlay say $30M (the cost of wave 2 of product). Same issue with Sawhorses, mitre saw tables, and electronics.

This is the logic behind their agreement to borrow a minimum of $30M against bona-fide POs from reputable companies like Lowe’s.

The Stacktech catalog has been updated on their website. It no longer says “coming spring 2024” or “coming summer 2024”. It now says “coming 2024”. They are not making their deadlines. Interestingly enough they list 25 products in their current line up. Lowe’s online only lists 16 as available. There is a breakdown somewhere. I am excited for these new products. I could see myself spending quite a bit to get switched over to ToughBuilt for my mobile storage. It is hard to gain confidence in a brand that is not available and only sourced through Lowe’s.

Need another company selling this stack tech… Lowe’s is in the way. They barely have any on stock.

My lowes just got a Toughbuilt setup.

Looks very nice but every box I held felt…overly heavy. I haven’t compared internal dimensions or weight with my Milwaukee stuff.

Every day I check to see if any Lowes within a 50 mile radius has the drawer units. I found one for delivery only. They wanted $79 for delivery, so the single drawer unit would have been $180 plus tax. I am so frustrated with trying to get my hands on some stack tech. I invested in a create and am starting to regret it because I can’t trust that I will be able to expand the system. Also if you look at Stack tech website they pushed all the release dates out, so Im not sure this is just a Lowes thing. I feel like I am going to have to go with a different system, which is really unfortunate. I love the stack tech design and quality.

Lowes has been a disappointment for me too. They were supposed to have two of the 3-piece storage systems in stock. Went to buy both and they don’t have any. Lowes gave me the run around saying they don’t sell it as one set and I would have to buy each piece separately. Well they didn’t have two sets of the three pieces separately either. Now I remember why I do my shopping at Home Depot.

Lies, look on the top warehouse shelves in the aisle.. in my Lowe’s it’s the screw aisle. Look all the way up, till your neck hurts. And you’ll see a plethora of stocked away Toughbuilt 3 drawer boxes. No price listed. When It scans in the computer, It goes off online price, which should be void considering It “out of stock” or “not available on store”. They F*ckin go them bro. They are just playing game since the big dogs Klein and DeWalt became their top sales prospects. Flex is another one. They used to have so many flex stackable and now they don’t. It’s all rigged man! What It all comes down to is MONEY!!! what % of the sale Lowe’s is actually receiving from the manufacturer. Dewalt and Klein have more money then they know what to do with It, so of course they’ll give Lowe’s their percentage cut they have requested. They just took 2 of Home Depot’s major prospects like they signed a deal with satan. And guess who gets F*cked? The customer. They invested money It what was available, and want to continue supporting Toughbuilt bc it’s making their life easier on the job. Get your shit in order Lowe’s!!!! Show some freakin humanity!

Lowe’s doesn’t have any Dewalt modular tool box system.

Lowe’s has Klein, but it’s somewhat specialized and isn’t a direct competitor to ToughBuilt StackTech. My thoughts are that Lowe’s booted Flex Stack Pack in favor of ToughBuilt StackTech. Lowe’s primary focus is winning sales away from Home Depot, and StackTech can help with that.

Looks like Lowes is taking on the business model of Sears. The TB line intrigues me for sure but if no one stocks it, I’ll move on to something at HD.

Its september and they havent deliver the rest it was suppoust to be for summer 2024.

Also i hear they were trying to go to other store, cause to be honest. Lowes has done a terrible job giving them promotion in store and desorganization.

I just purchased my toughbuilt stack tech setup from Lowe’s , however if you can’t find what you want in Lowe’s, there’s plenty of stack tech boxes and accessories on amazon. As far as the dolly’s, on Amazon on the toughbuilt Amazon store, they have been available once a week but when I look it’s only
3-5 available in inventory . When I saw that I bought one on the spot and returned my rolling toolbox I never used but bought cause no dollys (I mean 4 wheel hand cart) .

Don’t give up on toughbuilt. I think they are limiting supply to create demand. They have the best pack out. Most of the ppl on my job have dewalt and Milwaukee pack outs but when I pulled up to the job today in my new toughbuilt stack tech setup , nothing but compliments and interest .
