It looks like Lowe’s might be bringing some changes to their military discount and appliance return policies.
We have heard from several anonymous sources, and although the information seems to corroborate, it is best to consider these to be rumors until the claims are officially substantiated.
According to the reports, Lowe’s is rolling out updates to their military discount and appliance returns policies on March 9th, 2022.

We asked Lowe’s for clarification and confirmation, but their PR team has not yet responded.
Update: Judging from readers’ comments, Lowe’s has indeed implemented changes to their military discount and appliance return policies. As of May 6th, 2022, Lowe’s still has not responded other than to say they’ll be forwarding our inquiries to the appropriate contacts.
Here is what is being said:
Military Discount Changes: The military discount will no longer apply to select product categories. From what has been relayed, certain products in lumber, building materials, and electrical categories will no longer be eligible to receive the 10% military discount.
One source said that affected lumber products will include dimensional lumber, plywood, and OSB, and that affected electrical items include wire and cable.
The changes – if true – can still be significant even if limited in scope.

There are some existing exclusions already, such as gift cards and “volume or special discount programs (including, but not limited to, Contractor Packs, Buy in Bulk, Bulk Savings, Special Value, New Lower Price, and Was:Now).”
Appliance Return Changes: Sources are saying that customers will have 48 hours from delivery to return major appliances. Customers with products in original, unopened packaging or purchasing with LLC will still have 30 days to return.
(It has been explained that purchasing with LLC refers to Lowe’s credit cards.)
Looking at Lowe’s return policies online, major appliances are currently covered by a 30-day return policy.
I would presume that damaged or defective merchandise would be excluded by the rumored policy change. If so, this would most affect buyer’s remorse returns, measurement error returns, and other such reasons.
As you might be aware, Lowe’s recently launched a new PRO Rewards Program. If these rumored changes are indeed scheduled to go into effect next week, could it have somehow been prompted by Lowe’s “MVPs” program?

When the hell is Lowes going to get into the 21st century? Their in stone computer system is a DOS based relic from 40 years ago. Every time I use my credit card my x-wife’s name comes up first . I have tried ad nauseum to get them to remove it but they try to delete it, but it pops back up next time I use the card. Maddening!

Well I did. let’s see, one was on lunch and then I was told to call back and I did. the next rep was gone for the day.so I called the next day and after 3 transfers I get someone and they told me my $500 lawnmower was out of my 2year warranty and couldn’t get an exchange. I called kobalt directly to see if I could get a replacement part for it and they told me the mower was covered for 5 years.they gave me a reference # and said to return it and after a calm disagreement I finally got a store credit for a new one.I will never buy an additional warranty again because it is a waste of money! My wife started the process for the military discount program. I showed the clerk my id . Unfortunately, the clerk input my wife’s name so every time I use it they call me Suzanne. I asked if there was a way to change it. Nobody in the store can do it and I had to go on their web site to request the change. That was three years ago. Still waiting! I also tried calling and that was a waste of time and got no where. If they give me gup on using it, I’ll just go across the street to the Depot. And for smaller stuff I’ve been going to Ace and have had really good experiences there. They actually have people who can help.

I don’t believe this is true. My father’s name showed up on my account and stayed there for many many years. No clue as to how it happened. After my father died and his name showed up on my next trip I asked them to fix this problem. My tone was different. It hasn’t happened since that visit. I didn’t call anyone at corporate or customer service. I just found the right person who listened. They are rare but do exist.

And now that we are out of the middle east, more or less, and people are tired of the wars and their costs, some of that wave is dying down. The customer self checkouts are a joke if they think it will save labor. Your front of house is key and should be staffed to get customers out and feel good about their purchase, not feel dumb using scanners that inevitably have missing bar code data on items

Mr. Powell, What is the REAL reason for Military Discount change? Did some veteraan owned business use discount for large purchases of building supplies for business use. That kind of inconsiderate action should not effect the veteran homeowners whose want to improve their homes or some some small DIY projects. I just spent $700 in lumber supplies to repair my porch deck and couldn’t get the discount. Unfair ! I’m retired of fixed income so every penny saved is helpful. PLEASE reseach your facts to find better solution and not forget the military home owners.

I will be taking my business somewhere else. My husband is a 30 year veteran, and we had to buy a dryer tonight that is when we learned no more veterans discount. They should be checking military id on every purchase, no military id no discount. As any active duty or retired veteran will tell you, we always have them, we never leave them at home (as I’ve heard that on many occasions). That is just a messed up slap in the face, thanks for nothing lowes. My delivery date is at the end of the week. I will be price shopping.

I was tricked by a Lowe’s cashier to sign up for their MVP program. I soon found out my Military account no longer existed and was told by customer service the MVP Account negated the military account. Lowe’s HQ customer service told me I couldn’t undo the process and was stuck with the MVP account which by the way is GARBAGE. Three days of phone calls, store visits to fix the problem and my Military discount remains a thing of the past. When I looked at the checkout discount it was $1.10.(one dollar annd ten cents). Insulting. Bought the same fridge from COSTCO (+5 year extended warranty) with free delivery, install and haul-a-way. Please. Vet trashing during Vietnam was out of line, but vet worshipping has been out of control for 30+ years. They are not all heros by any stretch. Like any group some are truly admirable, some are fully abhorrent and the majority lie somewhere in between. Police and military are never even in the top 10 of dangerous jobs lists. That said, if they offer a military discount I’m going to take it. When I take it and then find out that the majority of items are excluded that leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Guess what after I retired after 26 years in the military and having spent over 7 years worth of deployments in the middle east I went to work building roads, funny thing is I never once got shot at, had to live in a dirt hole, eat food out of a plastic bag, wear the same cloths for two weeks, carry a 30 pound ruk all day, worry that every step I take will end up in an explosion, hold a dying 20 y/o with half his head blown away or spend 12 months away from my family every other year and for a salary that qualified my family for food stamps.

Meanwhile one of the two Lowes in my town doesn’t even employ cashiers anymore. It’s self checkout or nothing. I’ve stopped going there entirely because every time it’s some issue and I end up waiting behind everyone else having issues with it too for the one attendant who’s responsible for all of it. Funny though, I haven’t seen any reduction in the prices I’m paying for all the money they’re saving on labor.

Just went to Lowes today to buy a Shark Vacuum cleaner. Found the one I wanted and got ready to ring it up and the military discount would not take. I asked about it and they said the discount no longer applies to all lumber, all major appliances, most electrical components, and wiring. I’m not going to Lowes for anything else. I’ll be taking my business to a local hardware store from here on out. If Lowes don’t want to support veterans then I’ll support my local community.

Purchased 12 – 2×4 studs, not a large amount – not building a house. Had a hell of time getting registered for military but finally did a few years back. Today 03-30-22 used discount for lumber and found out it’s doesn’t apply. Now down the street Menards is offering 11% mail in rebate on ANY purchase. Rural King used to offer military discount, now Lowes… so goodbye Lowes and Rural King, hello Menards. May end up driving 50/60 miles to Home Depot. Corporate Greed

They are going after Veteran’s and Military in a very deceptive way. They ask at check out if you are military or veteran. Ask for ID. Provide a discount IF you create a Lowe’s account, provide your DD214, Drivers License, and phone number. They DO NOT care about military- veterans, it’s just another revenue stream.

I agree, I’m a disabled Vet on a very tight income, and one of the things I could always count on when I had a DYI project was. Going to Lowes, and picking up lumber nails or screws, and 14/3 or 10/3 wire, and odds and end plumbing. I guess now that I’m not saving that 10% I will shop at the local stores for now on. Return policies never bothered me, appliances hurt, but I don’t plan on buying them for at least eight years. Good going Lowes, I hope you lose a lot of business.

Yes they are….I recently made the fatal mistake of signing up for a Lowe’s MVP account. During the next visit I discovered my military status was wiped out and no more 10% discount. Lowes HQ customer service told me the MVP program negated my military status with them. Two more days of BS on the phone and visiting various stores and I’m giving up. I’ll no longer spend my many thousands of dollars at Lowe’s. Home Depot still honors vets and I’ll gladly drive the few extra miles to shop with them. To Hell with you Lowes!

This week at Lowes I discovered at the lumber section check-out, with 2×4’s, that they were no longer offering the 10% military discount. I didnt find anything on the internet, with this update so I called Lowes and spoke with management, they have in fact stopped offering discounts on lumber and appliances, (Winchester Va). I asked why they weren’t advertising this, though of course it’s obvious.

I went to a Lowe’s here in Northern Texas about two weeks ago. I tried to use my Veteran’s discount, which I’ve been using for many years, at a self check out register but I couldn’t find the usually present “Military” discount button and was told by a cashier (human) I had to go with her to receive the discount. She then pitched me the Lowe’s “MVP” program which Appealed to me because I would now would be able to categorize/itemize my receipts, so I signed up. A few days later I’m at another Lowe’s (where I spent no less than $30k last year renovating my guest house) and discovered my Military account was wiped out and non existent. When I spoke with the store’s customer service department I was told, “oh yeah, if you sign up for MVP you give up your Military discount.” They gave me the Lowe’s national customer service number who told me the same thing. I then asked them to simply cancel the MVP account and reinstate my military status account. Wouldn’t you know it? they actually
told me it was “impossible” to undo the MVP account. Three more days of long periods on the phone, back and forth to Lowe’s stores, and still no reinstatement of my military discount. Have I given up? Yes, but now I just drive a little farther and go to Home Depot, who still honors my military discount, and pledge to NEVER spend another dime at Lowe’s. It may well be that what happened to me is just the beginning of Lowe’s turning its back on its military related customers, and there are ALOT of us. If you still have your military discount, DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! If you can shop ANYWHERE but Lowe’s, do so!

You’re wasting your time driving to HD. They have made the same changes to their military discount program and according to what commenters are posting above, they also added a $400 annual cap to the few items you can still get discounted. So essentially HD’s changes are more extreme than Lowe’s. Both are garbage that aim to essentially kil off the military discount.

yes purchased lumber on 6/25/2022 not tax free, am a 100% disabled veteran so what they said above is in effect, also both tax free and military discounts are gone from furniture row, mathis brothers, matress firm and others, will find a lumber yard to buy might work. 24 years and this discount really helps a lot. Also Home Depot as this is spreading that is what we get for sacrificing our lives and the health problems we develop. This is in Oklahoma.

Not only that I was recently want to make a purchase of course, with their automatic line only open in cash they had to scan my drivers license even though I’ve been with them for many years as a veteran. That is dead wrong scammers don’t want your Social Security number or credit card numbers they want your drivers license that is more valuable to them and Lowes is just handing it over to the next. Oh my gosh after three or six months, saying hey we had a security breach. I thought Home Depot was bad, but they are far superior to Lowes now, I’ll be darned if I’m gonna have to scan my mill my drivers license to get a 10% discount when I have a military card Lowe’s, upper channel screen, jockeys and management. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Full agreement. Every time I order something online with Lowes, it’s a coin toss if I actually get it. They pull from in-store stock, and so many times I get a notification a week or two later “sorry, it’s out of stock.”
I walk in the store, find it on the shelf, and buy it. It’s like they didn’t even bother trying. Staples is the same way. Or I get told “check our online store, but that may have different prices than in-store because we’re two separate entities.” Oh please. If I HAVE to go online, I’m going to price compare and I guarantee you that y’all aren’t competitive. You really don’t want me to do that, right?
These 90s-era companies are really showing they just don’t care, and they’ll soon be with their friends Sears, Kmart, CircuitCity, Frys, etc in the big box store in the sky.

Tried to give HD my business. Ordered an outdoor patio set. Loveseat, two chairs and a table. Came with two seat covers for the loveseat, none for the chairs. Documentation and CS said they are sometimes shipped separately and wait 3 business days. Did not show up. HD’s solution: return the entire set and reorder. They don’t send out the covers separately. Just returned it and getting a set from Wayfair-not taking chances it’ll happen again. Beyond ridiculous-HD won’t be in business long if they keep up this practice.
When I moved to SC last year, Lowe’s extended my hold on an appliance order due to construction delays-super CS. HD would not hold for more than 2 weeks. Will use Lowe’s every time.

I started using Lowe’s almost exclusively several years ago because they had the military discount and seemed better run that Home Depot at the time.
My how the tides have turned. The only reason I still go to Lowe’s is the discount. Home Depot has recently made improvements to their military discount policy and seem to be the better run stores now. I likely will stop using Lowe’s almost entirely. I have one more load LP smart side I need to pick up this weekend just in case they decide to to end the discount next week.

HD already doesn’t give a discount on the items that Lowe’s is going to stop discounting. I’ve never gotten the discount on building materials or lumber from Lowe’s.
That said, HD and Lowe’s are great places to get lumber, if you love crappy lumber.

Agreed. Started driving 45 minutes south and pay a bit more but the lumber is way better. Best part is it’s all under roof and drive through so you drive up to the stack of what you need and load right into your vehicle. Actually takes less time than driving 15 minutes and sorting through garbage at Lowe’s depot and having to load twice. Once on a cart and then once into the vehicle.

There are several other smaller hardware stores that offer better custom service regardless if they don’t offer a military discount.

There steadily replacing good employees with lazy good for nothing monkeys. Ask at my Lowe’s for a soldering iron and the response is “a soup and who”. Most of the new hires spend there time on break and no one knows how to unlock the big stepladder to get stuff of the top shelf.

Ask how much they pay. It’s no coincidence that hardware stores are full of highschool kids. Everyone is going to have a different story, but I love the Lowe’s in my area for its superb cleanliness and organization. Yes, checkout has been usually limited to one or two registers, but they now added self-checkout.

I don’t know if “enjoy” is the right term. I assume you are being tongue in cheek. 48 hours isn’t enough to know if it’s really what you thought. We upgraded a dishwasher through another retail store, only after a few weeks did we realize we didn’t like the way it held plates, bowls, and utensils. This would totally rule out Lowes for appliances for us. Probably others if they know, and Lowes devotes a lot of square feet to appliances.

i ordered a dishwasher from lowes, and it arrived with a crack in the case. The welded joint under the insulation had a massive dent in it (though the box was fine?).
So we didn’t know it was leaking until installed and running…. fortunately I tested it before pushing back under the counter, but still made a decent mess.
In this case, I would been required to install and test within 48hrs… it is going to be a nightmare for people to find out they can’t return thousands in purchases when broken or damaged simply because they didn’t do it within that narrow window.
i’m sure some evil finance guy is rubbing his hands together knowing it will mean fewer returns, despite more stress on employees.

Not a veteran but my father is. Both Lowe’s and HD have become more and more unfriendly with the military discount. Instead of being able to show an ID you now have to register with some other company that “verifies” the information and then you have to punch that info in the store. I guess the ID card that gets you into an actual military installation isn’t good enough for these retailers and they need 3rd party verification to protect this. Funny enough in store transactions still require a valid photo ID to process. So what’s the point? Are they losing a significant amount through fake military ids? Considering how long they look / glance at the id how could they even check this? Pretty sure more walks out the door each year and ends up on another auction site then making vets go through the hassle of this.
For online orders I understand something different needs to be done to verify instead of a check box but in store the card should be more than enough.

I agree to an extent about how ID should be enough, but the military installations I go on all now scan IDs, making it difficult to bluff your way in post.
Unfortunately, phonies and has-beens know how to game a system, and a military or veterans ID isn’t too hard to fake. A few years ago I noticed pictures of accepted IDs for military discounts at Lowe’s, and over ten years ago I helped expose a phony panhandler in Baton Rouge. Her schtick was approaching strangers, claiming she’d locked her keys in her car and needed money for a locksmith. She was “in the Army” and showed her issued ID…problem was it was obviously old and the design had changed slightly. I wouldn’t be surprised if she used the same ID for military discounts.

That’s true, they always ruin it but I guess part of the rub comes in that we’re talking 10% off, not like a massive 30 or 40% discount here. Sure it adds up if you’re a big customer but I’d imagine it would be the smaller couple of times a year folks abusing it. I’d imagine if you’re a pro, you probably get a better discount anyway and the risk of a fraudulent federal id, stolen valor and a fraud lawsuit from the store would deter a lot. People are desperate for money but are you reselling the items you saved a mere 10% on? I just wouldn’t see the profit in that and how many people would buy something from a guy in the parking lot for a few dollars less, no receipt, no warranty and no returns? Family and friends only need so much too before you would have to broaden the market for real money. I have a HD cc and I get a 10% discount a few times a year. Any business that offers a discount has that factored into the margin.
HD already has the military discount capped at $400 per year which is like one powertool combo kit that walks out the door frequently. Investors are probably the ones that ruin this more than anything else.
It’s a family site so I won’t say what’s on my mind about the stolen valor folks, but yeah…

Lowes has gotten so bad that I switched to Home Depot only for my purchases. Too many problems at the Columbus Georgia Lowes to list all of them. Tried buying a $450.00 table saw. They never got it down from the 25 foot racks, one hour later, still no saw. When I asked the responsible lumber associate about it, he said go get it by the saws. But, there were none on the ground. He then said, ” no one told me “….went directly to Home Depot and picked up a better table saw by Dewalt. HD customer service took $50.00 off of the price and was back in my truck with the saw in 15 minutes. Enormously better than Lowes.

I’ll address one thing for now: Sears (RIP for the most part) offered 40% off on their tools around Memorial Day 2015 or so (might be off by a year). I picked up my first new Estwing hammer and Knipex pliers wrench in Albany, GA for about $50 total. Can’t imagine how many phonies or resellers stocked up on tools back then.

The verification systems are a huge pita if you qualify but don’t appear in their system due to unusual circumstances. I have been able to get the CS manager at both Lowes and HD to put an override in their system.

As a veteran I don’t mind it. 1) It makes it easier to get that discount online which before you couldn’t to. 2) Considering most Home Depots and Lowe’s are made up of self checkouts, I no longer have to wave the cashier down, wait for them to verify, input the discount, and then I can complete my transaction.

My wife told me about this. Lowe’s has gradually pulled back on the military and other discounts for at least a year now. Clearance and sale items usually have a “minimum retail price applied to this item” statement on the receipt, meaning that no additional discount can be applied.

Have to love the Lowe’s bashing when the same thing applies to HD as far as exclusions and returns (chainsaws, generators, etc). It all depends what area you live in and personal preference, maybe. Plenty of cases Lowe’s has been head and shoulders above HD, in my experience, I shop at both, and they remain my preferred store. The credit card discount perk ( which HD took away many years ago ) combined with cleaner and larger stores, and friendlier staff, makes a difference to me.
As far as discounts? Is this actually new? There have been exclusions. If not it was to be expected. Price match doesn’t apply to such market price goods either.
Appliance return limited to 48 hrs? I don’t think that can hold water. So many deliveries are made for an install days and weeks later, because they depend on remodeling and / or third party installers.

My town has 2 lowes and 1 HD. I normally shop at one of the Lowes because it’s location is much more convenient for me, though I used to shop at the HD more often before I moved. In my experience it’s “6 of one, half a dozen of the other”. I can tell you horrid customer service examples from both stores, and I can tell you great customer service examples from both. Both have staffing problems. It’s not too hard to find an employee at HD but they’re nearly always clueless and often rude. Lowes has the problem of trying to find an employee, and they’re nearly always clueless. I can’t say I’ve ever encountered a rude Lowe’s employee though.

The last time we had to return an appliance back to Lowe’s , it took them almost two weeks to pick it up . Running 2 businesses and did a good amount of volume with Lowe’s . Using their credit card , and also earning a volume discount.
When the volume discount stopped, so did most of the business with Lowe’s .
They Fail to understand that a contractor can purchase more then 20-25 consumers purchasing one or two items.
I moved on to the other box store and no regrets.

My thoughts as well. Bought my first house in the 1960’s and have bought from the same local chain of appliance stores ever since. They just seem to care more – do OK on prices – but are way more accommodating. I’m sad that their territory does not extend to cover my other domiciles. In Florida we were flabbergasted at the take-it-or-leave-it attitude we encountered at one national chain and had a tough time finding a a smaller local dealer.

The local appliance stores are the only ones that seem to carry high-end appliances here. No Miele, Wolf, or Electrolux at HD or Lowe’s, for better or worse.
Typically I’ve gone there, pay just under sticker, but get them to throw in free delivery/installation. Costs a little more than an LG or Samsung at the box stores, but at least I can be confident in the installation, handling, and contribution to the local economy.

Lowe’s hires mostly teens and early-mid 20’s. There is no possible way to get people with years of expertise in a particular field being that young. I’m 27 working in Millwork, I’ve never installed or been to an install of a single door, storm door, window, nothing at all. Yet I’m expected to know the ins and outs of any install within my department at least. It’s not my job to (off the clock) reach out to installers and tag along to learn every step.
And God forbid that I do it on the clock and no one is covering the department, then customers will really start whining.
Lowe’s is setting customers up for disappointment. I sell installations and window install consultations, beyond that, I know what I know, and don’t know what I don’t.
It’s not that anyone is trying to neglect customers in store or that anyone is too lazy to explain how things work. We just don’t know because how could we?

Walmart and Lowes are publicly traded companies – both based in the US and both having their stock listed on the NYSE.
My personal holdings with Vanguard – provide me some (miniscule) ownership of both companies – as Vanguard owns a little over 8% of Lowes outstanding shares and over 4% of Walmart – making Vanguard one of the top owners of both companies.
I also thought that Walton Enterprises and the Walton Family -were still the lions-share owners of Walmart stock.

It is still nice when an associate at either store would thank you for your service. I purchase from both upgraded my entire kitchen with Lowes and appliances at HD still got both with discounts. I’m going to go where I can get the best deal. Dropping a military discount usually means going elsewhere. Lowes near me hires a lot of veterans and they provide a lot of great advice. Would be a shame to drop military discounts and too far from any bases for most folks.

So one of my larger income streams comes from retail consulting. And this may piss people off, but the veteran demographic really isn’t a key component to any business. I appreciate veterans as much as the next guy, but most people who served don’t think of themselves as veterans. They did their years, and moved on with their lives. It really doesn’t pay for companies to target them with discounts and promos.
Now, the stupid appliance policy may bite Lowes in the ass. Personally, when I have an issue with a product, I go right to the manufacturer, but I’m an outlier in that regard.

Let’s not forget, America and it’s Veterans have been at war for twenty years. Limbs lost, lives lost and minds lost, and many of those Veterans did multiple tours, some who lost a limb, healed up and went back. This also includes the Vietnam Veteran, who in most cases was drafted and did what was asked of them, so I think it’s important, even if it’s a small percentage.

I will say, an Ace Hardware store with 4 employees standing at the wait, one of them call you by name, and expert advice, just outshines ANY box store. It is worth the 10-20% more you pay every single time.
Then they closed that store.
Doesn’t matter though. Customer Service and the Art of Hospitality have just completely disappeared. It is very disappointing to see what a turn things have taken over the last few years.

I am not a veteran, but I have a deep respect for our servicemen and women. I have never had a problem with a single Lowes. However, I do use Milwaukee M12, which takes me to Home Depot on occasion. I find HD to be dusty and staffed by indifferent associates. I also have Flex and Craftsman V20 tools, so I frequent Lowes with the wife. We both love the shiny stores, and usually get stellar service. We both find Lowe’s to be a superior store as home owners. From hardware to blinds, we are usually very pleased. While I respect the opinions here, I am almost tickled, and usually baffled by the anti-Lowes talk that permeates the threads on this site. As a non-pro, I could be an outlier.

It may well depend on your locale or local store management.
I have 2 Home Depots near me. One is 2.7 miles away. the other 3.5 miles.
The nearest Lowes is 3.2 miles away. Of the 3 I prefer to shop at the HD that is 3.5 miles away. It’s just cleaner, bigger, and more helpful than the other one. The staff/management also seem to keep stock better organized at the larger store – while the smaller store seems to always have many items out of place or lying about. When I order online for store pickup, however, I use the smaller store – as their customer service folks and order storage/lockers are much better than at the larger store.
I can also say that the nearest Lowes is brighter and cleaner than either Home Depot – but the staff don’t seem to have a clue about customer service (if you can even find someone for help.) The return and online order pickup process at this store has also been abysmal – the few times that I have needed to use either one.

Both have changed their military discount. I do shop both stores. Have been in both from east to west coast. Home Depot does not seem as clean as Lowes, but from all my travels Home Depot by far has the most knowledgeable staff. Not says some of Lowes staff isn’t helpful or friendly. Hard to find anybody to help in either store chain now, but Home Depot wins in customer most of the time. Just my take.

I wonder if the exclusions point to them trying to keep some sort of profit margin on those items? I don’t know anything about the base cost of lumber vs markup but I do know several local businesses that operate on such tight profit margins right now that they have to choose whether to offer a discount and make no profit on things or not offer a discount and afford to stay in business.
I live in a military town so discounts are common at places like restaurants, but the Lowes discount was rife for abuse when they used the phone number system. I have been standing with friends when they got a phone call from Lowes asking if they approved a purchase on their behalf. It was usually a family member in another state claiming the discount. Then my friends are in a tough place because it is family…
All that said, Lowes and Home Depot are across the street from each other here. I can walk in Lowes and encounter exactly 1 employee (the cashier) the entire time I’m in there. At Home Depot I’ll have to tell 4 people good and don’t need assistance. Or if I do need help they almost always walk with me to find the thing I’m looking for.

Here’s an idea, why don’t lowes discontinue their 10% employee discount? Every employee gets a discount card to use on every product in the store even if it’s marked down….only give a 10% discount to veterans..why does a temp employee ( by temp I mean it’s a revolving door at lowes most employees stay less than a year) a small percentage are veterans , the ones that have never served in an armed force get a discount and people that fought for our country get screwed? I realize there are ID scammers and perhaps a few valid Veterans who are flaunting the rules on items purchased for “Personal” use…..BUT…that being said, a individual Veteran, using their 10% discount to buy a new faucet for their home bathroom is certainly recognizable from a individual buying a entire case of faucets for his home bathroom.
That being said, ALL these retailers who offer Military Discounts, can verify who is the real deal and who is not. A Drivers License, with photo ID, matched against the Military ID being presented would eliminate 95% of these scammers right away.
Now…..stores can use present technology to photo every transaction and fraudulently using a military ID ( VA disability cards included) is a felony and using this ID to purchase products is fraud, at the felony level, because it entails using a Federal ID to commit the fraud.
These merchants have the tools to put a HUGE dent in the military discount fraud but don’t want to put forth the extra effort. This causes innocent Veterans, who have put their lives on the line for all of us, to bear the brunt of a few unscrupulous ones who the Merchants could catch if they wanted to.
Seriously, how much is Lowes losing by giving me 10% off a package of 4 lightbulbs or a couple of
2 X4’s.

At my Lowe’s store in Southern California I just have my “My Lowe’s” card scanned at check out, no other ID required. To me 10% isn’t that big a deal since all it’s doing is eliminating the sales tax. I never look at the price on the shelf and take off 10% in my head. But in the past when buying open garden rock bags and receiving 80% off and then at checkout receiving another 10% off, Loading my car with 30 bags and thinking, hey not too bad for $35.

*I like and shop my local Lowes BUT some other Lowes that I have shopped at have been reluctant to apply the Veterans Discount. I have even been asked to show a PICTURED ID when I had proof of ID but was asked to go out to my car to prove what was in Lowes computer. Maybe
its because of a lack of training of their cashiers/staff by management for the Veterans Discount. I have heard Rumors (which I would not spread) that an older store in nearby NY that I used had questionable requests by customers who could not prove their eligibility to be valid VET , that some non vet employees as well as customers resented the discount .
*BUT I can assure you as a retired Vet Lowes support is very appreciated and favored by Vet customers for shopping at Lowes.

I live in Osage Beach Missouri and we have a Menards, a Lowes and a Home Depot all withing a 2 minute drive of each other. I have been a dedicated Lowes customer Mainly due to the Veteran Discount. I will be rethinking that if that benefit goes away. I may be just one person but I spend about 4 grand a year there. This year alone I have several big projects lined up amounting to about $25K.

This is basically the same as homedepot’s appliance policy, and as for the veterans discount, HomeDepot just rolled out a program that makes it so you have to register your veteran status with your homedepot accountin order to get any military discount, and it is limited to like $400/year in total discounts, and you have to have a smart phone to pull up a temporary qr code to scan at the register in order for the discount to be applied. and if you have a pro-extra account attached then you are not eligible for that discount at all because the veterans discount is for private use only and they assume every purchase you make on that is for a customer.

Well, considering I can get lumber and electrical at either store, and there isn’t much difference in quality (if you pick through the piles), then we’ll just have to see what the market forces do to this. I didn’t realize Home Depot changed the military discount on lumber, maybe my store was just dumb, but I always got the discount.
I would actually prefer if both Home Depot and Lowes would fix their shipping and websites. Lowes in particular is horrible at shipping dates, and when I call customer “support” I get told “It’s a third party shipper, we can’t help you.” As much as I don’t like to use Amazon, if I call Amazon about a shipment, the person on chat typically gets a solution the first time. That means I don’t waste an hour or two on the phone with Lowes, and sometimes, that is worth a fifty or one hundred dollar difference.
And as a veteran, I’d ask the other people flipping out on non-veterans questioning the discount to chill out. Yeah, its hard to describe to someone in words and pictures what it means to be shot at in a war zone, or spend a considerable amount of time underway in a small metal tube known as a submarine (I’ve done both of these things). But that’s not an excuse to shove it in people’s faces. Let people question whether a store should or should not give a military discount. That’s part of the freedoms we swore to protect. Sometimes that freedom means hearing something we don’t like to hear.

If lowes is going to limit what I can use my military discount on I will buy those items some where else. Taking discounts away from those who served is un American. Disabled Veterans are on a fixed income and to take away there military discount is wrong. Lowes is just greedy. Lowes is not the only home improvement store. I know and have worked with thousands of disabled vets, and almost none were on fixed incomes unless they were 60 years + and fully retired or confined to a VA hospital. In the New Orleans area, the taxes are at 8.75% if LOWE’S and other companies want to help VETERANS then it’s time to give us, the veterans, more of a DISCOUNT. When you add it up we veterans in New Orleans area are only saving 1.25% on purchases. With inflation and increases in taxes we need 20% off now not 1.25%.

In addition, with respect to sales tax – all legitimate retailers – are just tax collectors. They collect it on sales but have to hand it over to the State/County/Municipality.
In our plumbing and remodeling businesses – we tried to stay on the up and up with regard to sales tax. If a job was truly a capital improvement – we and the customer would fill out the paperwork. But if it was clearly just maintenance work – then we would collect and pass on sales tax. We had many customers ask if they could avoid paying tax by paying with cash. Our salespersons/customer reps would explain that we did not do business that way – preferring to be paid by check made out to the business or by credit card. We could make a financing option available – but if asked we’d suggest that the customer shop around to see if better terms might be available elsewhere. If that lost us some business – so be it.
There were indeed many “contractors” in our area that reportedly worked on a cash only basis. Some of those may well have been the folks one might see picking up day labor at the local “shape-up” spots – compared to our having mostly longtime employees on payroll.

As I Veteran I strive to do business with businesses who tend to treat Veterans better than other business do. On March 8th I purchased $1850 worth of lumber from Lowes to build a deck. The clerk at the Pro desk said that this would be the last day that they offered a military discount on lumber. The $185 discount was nice. i guess it was my lucky day. If I had waited until the 9th to buy the lumber I would have missed the savings. The clerk said he was sad that vets are losing this benefit.

I have gained a different perspective from reading all of these comments, I believe that a good percentage of the posters on here are over reacting. As a Veteran and believing in the Constitution and Bill of Rights and the freedoms it represents. I believe that Lowe’s or any other company doesn’t owe anyone anything when it comes to discounts. Lowe’s has the right to run their business anyway they want. I didn’t join the military so I could receive discounts when I shop. I joined the military to serve our country and fight for the freedoms that allow Lowe’s to have the freedom to give or not give discounts on what they sell. I don’t expect discounts from the stores I shop in, Who am I to expect a discount for serving my country. Boycotting a store for taking away a discount on some items doesn’t make any sense. Are we going to start boycotting all stores that don’t give military discounts?

While yes, it does factor into my shopping habits when I know about one, or ease of use regarding it, it’s a perk that I don’t expect. Most places don’t give any kind of discount at all. By all means, spend your money where you choose, but this “everyone owes us because we volunteered” attitude is sickening. I was drafted and don’t feel that way.

I once ordered some things on the lowes app… I’m afraid to do it again. I got an email from PayPal and only previewed it. I thought the order didn’t go through. My mistake, of course. So when I checked my order and it wasn’t there, I had no reason to believe the email wasn’t about this. So… I reordered.. and added an item lol I realized what I had done not even 30 mins later and canceled the first order. Then as crazy charges started hitting my account not even an hour and a half later I canceled the second order. Both said canceled, and showed that I owed and paid nothing… well, the first order was about 250, and the second was 350ish.. I understand that if some things are picked up and some are shipped that they hold some money, but 1500?!? Yes, I typed that correctly. Fifteen hundred dollars on two orders no more than 600 total canceled within an hour and a half. I had several pending amounts of 19, a few 49 dollar charges, three or 4 350 dollar charges, and AT LEAST 2 250 charges. When I called they wanted to blame PayPal… I don’t think it’s even possible… then the second time they acted like it was no big deal because ‘we didn’t TAKE money out of your account. It’s PENDING.’ I said, well either way my money isn’t available to me, so you need to figure it out! He then blamed my bank… took over two weeks to be released back to me.

I drive 27 miles one way and it is the closest place to get many of my supplies
The one’s I really feel bad for are the disabled veteran there income

They take this time to stop the discount when times are tough while they make millions

What a ruse or ploy. I’ve encouraged other vets to join Lowes Military Discount Program in an effort to recognize a nationwide business that recognizes vets for their service to their country. Now after so many have become loyal to Lowes they turn their backs on the vets by disallowing two of the most beneficial products (lumber and appliances) from the list of discounted products to vets. Don’t tell me it’s the current economy that’s at fault, their prices have increased exponentially to cover that. It’s actually a marketing venture to encourage all vets and their vet friends to sign on and then cut them off at the knees. Home Depots gain will be Lowes loss!

Home Depot also doesn’t allow Lumber or major appliances. Home Depot also has a $400 annual limit on the discount. So if anything, all Lowes did was match Home Depot’s policies. Except Lowes doesn’t have an annual cap, so arguably still a better discount. Ironically, Home Depot expanded their military discount to online purchases, just like Lowes has been doing.

I shop at Lowe’s in two capacities, as a regular veteran Joe, and as a Pro. customer through my work. I have noticed they are now catering to the Pro. customer and alienating the regular customer through doing away with veterans discount. Throughout the years I have been a loyal customer and had great relationships with the employees. I feel I am the same person shopping there regardless of the hat I am wearing. If they think the Pro. is any different from the regular person, they are making a mistake. I will now take my business elsewhere as a Pro. and as a regular every day customer.

I think that Lowe’s and Home Depot met and decided to end their 10% veteran discount on lumber, appliances, electrical, etc. Their new policies took effect at almost the same time. Did these two companies conspire to “price fixing”?
No more 10% discount for those which laid their lives on the line for their country; however, if you use your Lowe’s credit card you get a 5% discount on lumber, etc.
Lowe’s appreciates possible interest income over arms, legs, eyes, blood and stress and all things military has given.
I will be buying more items from their competitors.

I got into it years ago with Home Depot about not having the 10% discount at all there stores. I got word back with a lame excuse and then sometime later they did implement the discount. Now they want to do the same thing again. Seems like everytime some new person comes into the corporation that is the first thing they look at. What can we do to make more profits and what can we reduce to get there.

I think it is time that the VA community speaks up and either stops buying at Lowes or some how boycott the store. We Veterans always seem to get the short end of the stick. Every business talks about helping Veterans but when it comes to company profit, Who gets the takeaways first? This happened once before When they did away completely with the VA discount, and probably with enough outcry from the Veterans they reinstated the 10% discount across the board. Now here again, they are modifying the plan to just include certain items that get the 10% off. Now that is a bunch of CROCK. I am asking that all Veterans not stand for this.

As a veteran I didn’t join the military to get a 10% discount at stores or have someone thank me for my service. Actually I think it’s embarrassing to expect a discount at any store just because you served your country. I believe my viewpoint is more popular among veterans than any other in regards of expectations of receiving discounts for serving our country. Just being allowed to serve our country is thanks enough.

I agree with you to a point. I also, don’t feel I am entitled to any perks just because I was in the military, I didn’t join for that reason. However, I feel that businesses use the veterans discount to lure people in so they get more business, then when they have gotten the customer base they want they drop it to increase profits. We, as consumers can play the same game, if they no longer offer the discount then there is no need to be a loyal customer. I think too often businesses forget how hard we work for the money we spend and only chase the profits.

Wow. Y’all had a lot of issues with the discount and I haven’t had one yet over the past 2 years. I’ve bought a mower, water heater, fencing, trees, and lots of other things and have received 10% off each time. I noticed that the discount went to 5% when I was buying lumber. Well, I found online gift cards for 10% off. Hmmm, that’s about 15% off my lumber now. Yes, I found a solution to the lowered percentage offered by Lowes. Be happy that we get some sort of discount. They don’t have to do it. Nobody does. Also, if you expect people to give you things just because you served, stop. Nobody owes you anything. That’s life. I don’t expect anything from anyone and then when I do get something, I’m pretty happy about it. Now back to pricing out my fence.

Lowes didn’t even have the decency to post a sign to notify us of the change in their Veterans Discount policy. I didn’t find out until I got to the register and the cashier rang up my large purchase with no discount. I’m going to Home Depot from now on – they have better prices than Lowes and better lumber.

Bought five 2X6X16 planks yesterday and was told there is no longer a veteran discount on lumber, electrical and plumbing supplies. What’s the point of going to Lowes if you’re remodeling or maintaining your “lumber, electrical and plumbing” centric home?
The stores are physically terrible with “stuff” cluttering up aisles and dirt laying on floors and surfaces.

Thanks lowes……i am a veteran, and while i neither expect nor require a discount for my service, it sure is nice to get one where i do. I came to lowes BECAUSE of the military discount. You want to cut it back or remove it, thats fine its your choice. Likewise it is also my choice to not shop at lowes any longer. I dont require anything, but i really hate it when you punish 1 group to promote another group.

When you sign a blank check to the United States government with your life and have somebody like Lowe’s thank you then turn around at the worst of times and jerk the rug out from under you sucks. I do all my own home improvements that requires lumber 2x4s plywood OSB sheetrock electrical wiring. What you have left us with is not home improvement it’s piddly ass home repair s***guess your contractors got mad of us getting the same discount for doing our own work so Lowe’s can kiss a big ass.

I have been loyal since they gave the discount. I like the store better than Menards and Home Depot. I do drive extra miles to get to Lowes but will stop at Home Depot as they are actually closer. I recently was told at the register that the clerk could not get the discount to work, thanked me for my service and gave me 10% non-military discount. I did learn recently @ Home Depot, when I bought the last 3 of the same item, one of which had a torn package and one was okay and another had no package. The clerk said they can discount them up to 50% at the register without management getting involved. I will continue to use Lowes, just not as my primary shopping place. Sorry they changed the plan I felt honored when I used it and I was thanked for service in Nam. The country is reverting back to the lack of welcome home to vets for serving. Thank you to those that recognize us, it means a lot even though its 50 years late.

Lowe’s has definitely cut the military discount on appliances. I was about to hit purchase on a dishwasher when I noticed instead of the $49.90 discount (10% military discount) I should have been credited I was only given a $3.90 discount. Guess I’ll be purchasing my dishwasher from Home Depot now, thanks Lowe’s you were always my go to until now.

Military discount that really isn’t. It’s a use of veterans to make them look like they care. ANYONE can get a 10% discount. If you’re going to place the military sacrifice and service into your business in the form of a discount, then DON’T limit it it to full priced items. You’re not giving up anything special towards the discount. It should be there, PERMANENT, against all prices, sale, clearance or otherwise. Above and on top of, otherwise it’s a public stunt using veteran’s as a prop.
And like I said, ANYONE can get a 10% discount. Go look in the recycle bin or trash can at your local post office. Change of Address packets get tossed all the time and have the 10% off coupon. Or you can just purchase them electronically off eBay for a dollar, have them delivered into your inbox and printed off for store use.

I shopped exclusively at Lowes. I felt that if they cared enough to offer a discount I would stay loyal to them even though not all items are cheaper. So now I will just shop around more, their loss.

I stayed with Lowes prior to and during Covid and paid the $11.+ for campfire kindling masquerading as a 2×4 x 8′. All the while, another real lumber establishment had the same prices yet offered far superior lumber quality. Their Prime was really prime. But I stayed with Lowes frankly because of the offered veteran’s discount. Now I learned that it only applies to certain items, yet the staff at the checkout cannot specifically tell me what IS a qualified product that is discounted 10% for veterans. It may be easier to tell us what IS qualified, as opposed the the veiled descriptions that are purposefully suggesting (on the surface) that there is no change to the policy. There is a big change to the policy. You could of at the very least notified us all that are qualified (we had to align with a third party VA qualifier with a DD214 and all but a urine sample) with an email that clearly provides guidance. You have our information. Or reduce the amount to 8% or 5% across the board, instead of spoon feeding this as a qualified purchase and that as a not qualified purchase. You will likely lose a few folks that had loyalties to Lowes. I will not abandon Lowes entirely, however I will visit my local ‘real’ lumber yard for my lumber purchases, and let the warped splinters go by.

Dang, I went to Aldi and eggs were 2.69 dz they used to be .89 cents, how un-American is that? There are all kinds of reasons stores are raising or lowering prices or eliminating benefits. None have anything to do with being anti-American. Also nobody owes anyone gifts for fighting for our country’s freedom. Our country’s freedom should be payment enough. If anything the one’s who deserve discounts and gifts for serving our country are the ones who are not alive to receive them.

Just went to lowes today to buy new drip pans for my oven, a $36 item. I got home and looked at my receipt and it says this item not eligible for discount. Goodbye lowes.

Yes, I noticed this recently when I went to make a large on-line purchase and many if the items were excluded. I went over to HomeDepot, put the same items in my cart and received the full 10% discount on every item.
While I do like my local Lowes store, looks like most of my future purchases will be at HD. Its too bad, Lowes had always distinguished itself in how it supported veterans. Looks like the bean counters took over.

Well, I just spent over $300 at Lowes for lumber. No more military discount! I served for over 20 years and thought that there were people and businesses that really cared about our country and were thankful to those of us that served to help make the country safe and free. That is not the case anymore. I never expected special treatment because of my service, but after years of showing a little care and thanks and now to take it away, hurts.

Just found out (at the cash register) that Lowes arbitratily changed their Military discount policy with no notice to their loyal military customers. Embarrassing and disrespectful……. I canceled my appliance order and went across the street to Home Depot and searched for a better price elsewhere. Lowes’s disrepect just cost them my business….Guess we were the “low hanging fruit” in an effort to pay the inflated executive salaries. Good bye Lowes.

Veterans, and especially their families, endure a lot of hardships. Training, even in peace time, can be extremely dangerous to life and limb. The horrors of war are a fact.
Still, at the end of the day we chose the life and got a check at the end of each month for our service.
Again I never expect a thank-you but always appreciate one. Thanks to Lowes for what you do provide.

Retired Army(MSG) I always shop at LOWES for my hardware needs even when Walmart has them cheaper. Walmart doesn’t offer any type of veteran discount not even a Veteran’s parking space. When I noticed certain items like pressure treated lumber were being dropped for discount it was very dissapointing, I actually felt betrayed by LOWES. Post covid and the current administration has inflation on the rise, maybe when infaltion falls we will get all the items back on discout again.
