Lowe’s has a New Mini Tool Box

Kobalt Mini 3-Drawer Tool Chest with 2-Drawer Top Box

Lowe’s launched a new Kobalt mini tool box, featuring 3 drawers and a lipped top.

The new tool box is the perfect bottom-box companion to the other mini Kobalt tool box that went viral last year over the holiday season.

Kobalt Mini 3-Drawer Tool Chest

These tool boxes are sized for benchtop use, and for holding small tools, accessories, or lifestyle items.

They can also used for things like art supplies and makeup, which is why Lowe’s sold so many of these tool boxes in white and pink last year.

At this time, the 3-drawer Kobalt mini tool boxes are available in blue, black, pink, and white.

Price: $24.98

Discussion

It’s small, measuring 11″ wide x 6.22″ deep x 7.4″ tall. The weight capacity is said to be 20 lbs.

Some of you might be thinking that these tool boxes are too small to be practical.

I bought one of the 2-drawer tool chests last year, and it’s a useful novelty. It’s cute and functional.

If you need 10 of them on your bench, I’d say buy something else.

I’m fairly satisfied with the build quality the 2-drawer chest offers for $20. This one adds another drawer and trades the lid for a lipped top shelf.

While you could place the 2-drawer chest on top, or maybe a second 3-drawer bottom box, you don’t have to.

Lowe’s is offering free shipping on these tool boxes as part of a $45+ order, which hasn’t been the case. It used to be that you’d have to hunt them down in stores.

If you want matching bottom and top boxes, the total comes out to$44.96, and so you’ll need to add something to your order, such as a screwdriver, marker, bits, utility blades, or some other useful filler. Or opt for ship-to-store.

Menards have a Perfomax version of this too.

That’s fun! I want to have a reason to have this, though nothing comes to mind.

Can I stack multiple three-drawer chests to create a tower and put the two-drawer on top?

Not unless you put some furring strips on the bottom box to lift the next box above the lip. It won’t be super sturdy putting multiple on top either.

The bottom is just a tad bit larger for the top to sit on it inside a little lip. Unfortunately you can’t stack the bottoms on top of each other without modifying them. Would be cool though!

Jared, you, like me, live in Canada and Rona or anyone else does not carry these…at least from what I have seen. But, are you aware that CDN Tire caries a Mastercraft version?
      https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-portable-mini-steel-tool-box-with-2-drawers-black-10-83-in-0586545p.html

They do not have color choices, but every now and then they go on special. I bought 2 of them when they were $19.99. They are nothing special but I found they were great on my work bench for holding pencils, pens, markers, and other small items. They help keep a bit of order in a nice compact space that will tip over.

I would love to have the color choices Lowes has, but I like these Mastercraft ones.

Yep, I’ve seen it. I keep hoping Rona will bring in the Kobalt ones so I can get one in a different color. I hope they add this 3-drawer version too.

I hadn’t noticed them go on sale though – I’ll keep an eye out.

Sold! Ordered a top and bottom set in matching blue. Added a Kobalt mini screwdriver set to receive the free shipping, and to fit inside the lower box. And because this was my first order with Lowe’s, received a $5 coupon applied to the order. Yes, I know these will probably go on sale at Christmas, but finding a matching set then may be difficult. Not taking any chances. These are going to a young mechanic friend for his house, who is just getting started with his business. Merry Christmas!

They will be scalped like crazy around Christmas. I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to chase them down during Black Friday week. There was no buying limit for customers and Lowe’s employees told me that people came in and bought 3-20 at a time (they were $12 BF deals). Then found them on Facebook marketplace for $50-75. In-fkn-sane. I made a marketplace post calling those people out.

A generous guy on FB msg’d me to say he found some at a local store, and I was able to go there and score one for the normal $19.99 price. I thanked him lol.

Anyways, but them now and don’t stress out during an already stressful season trying to get a “deal”. $55+ tax isn’t terrible for a cool box set. I just bought a matching bottom for mine. Thanks to this article popping up!

This one is more interesting to me than the “top box”. I wish it were just a little bit deeper, then I’d buy one in a heartbeat to use for soldering supplies & electronics tools. I need the extra depth so I can stack it under either my iron or my rework machines.

Does anyone know of any similar product to this just slightly larger?

Not bigger, but I’ve got one of these 5 drawer chests, and like it. About $40. Snap On sells it for FAR more.

I was at the nearest Lowes and saw the Pink ones in stock…but no White ones. Damn you Influencers!
(last night, I thought, “should I go back and buy them up? Xmas is coming. Could I get $100 each? $80 each? Shipping is as much as one box so… nah. fagetabutit!”

But getting the lowers for those I got the uppers for.. .that would be nice .

I actually ordered one of these the day they hit the site a couple weeks ago haha. The drawers open and close MUCH nicer then the 2 drawer top I have, which is a big improvement. The tops were more of a cool thing then a usable item for me because the drawers aren’t great (cant expect much for the price) but these new bottoms actually slide in and out nice. Need them to release it in green now so I can get a bottom for my green top too! I haven’t seen these new bottom boxes hit any stores locally, just online so far.

I believe I’ve seen them in green at least along the West Coast. White, pink, blue and others too.

I might have to pick one up – thanks for sharing that about the slides. I thought the others were just pretty junk because of how poorly the drawers operated. I mean you don’t expect soft close ball bearing slides here, but those were pretty bad. The similar PIT brand on Amazon is/was the same (could even be the same factory, who knows). Will the drawers on this bottom box come out (with or without fiddling)?

I really wanted to like the smaller box, but the grinding when I pulled the drawers open set my teeth on edge each time.

I bought a few of the two drawer versions in multiple colors last Spring and so far can’t see a rational use for them at all. I tried.
So now I’m gifting them to visitors who want them for some (imagined?) use or their wives.

A good friend got me one of the smaller ones for my birthday earlier this, after we both saw them on here… She had to have the Green one, and picked me up the blue one. Now I’m really wanting a reason to get the other. Practical? Perhaps not… but my current one works great as a glorified desktop organizer for desk-type and hobby “tools”… I’m sure I could find good use for the other!

My wife got me the green top box for Christmas last year and now I want the new bottom box but they don’t make it in green. What’s with that? So if I want a matching set I have to by a new top box also. Black, blue, white, and pink the bottoms come in. At least make matching bottoms in the colors that you made the top box’s in.
