I recently came across some Ideal hose clamps with packaging that said “Made in USA, Fabrique aux E.U., and Hecho en EE. UU.” The person who had showed me the item had made the common mistake of thinking that E.U. stood for European Union.
Fabrique aux E.U. is an abbreviated way of saying Fabrique aux Etats-Unis, which is French for Made in USA.
Similarly, Hecho en EE. UU. is short for Hecho en Estados Unidos, or Hecho en Estados Unidos de America, which is Spanish for Made in USA. In Spanish, plural phrases are often represented by double abbreviations, meaning that Estados Unidos (United States) is abbreviated as EE. UU. instead of just E.U.

You’re kidding, right?
Stuart
Completely serious. I’ve discussed (argued) about this more times than I can remember. I few of those I’ve argued with still made the mistake despite having studied French or Spanish as their foreign language in school. It’s the E.U. that throws most people off.

?Thanks?

On balance, people are not very smart…
Stuart
While that may be true in general, I think this confusion is more about unfamiliarity with the different languages.

Chris
Does anyone know how to get in touch with this company.
Stuart
Which company?
Lisa Brooks
My company purchases a large amount of your OLO safety cutters and we would like to know if you have the gray guard replacements? We have had a few where the guard breaks – thus leaving us with an unsafe tool.
Stuart
I’m sorry?
Dumb Guy
Ok, but for real what is up with the idiots commenting like this tool review website is a manufacturing company that apparently makes shoddy junk? First of all, this is an ELEVEN year old article (I know, duh, I’m commenting too)
Second, you folks clearly have a computer or something in front of you, just go to google translate or google the damn part number or whatever you’re looking for dumb dumb.
Worse than the “Order corn” geriatrics on facebook.
Stuart
Some folks aren’t computer or internet-savvy – which is okay.
Dumb Guy
Lol true. I was just reading the comments and getting more and more worked up like they were doing it on purpose.
I apologize for going off.
Keep up the good work!
