Makita has launched a full-size cordless router, RP001G, following the lead of brands such as Metabo HPT and Milwaukee.
The new Makita cordless router will be available internationally with a 12mm collet (~1/2″) with 6mm (~1/4″) and 8mm sleeves. Hopefully a 1/2″ and 1/4″ model is in the works for the USA market.
It will be powered by the XGT batteries, with product images showing it off paired with a 2.5Ah (18V 5Ah equivalent) battery.

The new Makita cordless router features 5-speed settings, from 8,000 to 25,000 RPM.
Makita highlights the router’s lighter weight compared to corded models. It weighs 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) when powered with a 2.5Ah battery.
The new XGT router looks to have an integrated plunge base, rather than a motor that can be swapped between fixed and plunge-style bases.
It has a 60mm (~2.36″) plunge depth.
Metabo HPT was first to market with a cordless full-size router, launching it as part of their MultiVolt cordless power tool system in 2021. One of the nice features is that you can use the HPT router with their 36V batteries, and an AC adapter is also available.
The Milwaukee M18 cordless router launched in 2023.

Milwaukee has an attachment that lets their cordless router be used with the same guide rails as for their cordless track saw. It’s unclear as to whether Makita has a similar accessory in mind.
Makita says that the new router is AWS-compatible for automatic dust collection activation, but there don’t seem to be any images or video footage of a dust shroud or its efficiency.
The new router is water resistant to IPX4 standards.
USA availability and pricing details are not yet available. Makita USA has been extremely slow in bringing XGT cordless tools and accessories here, but maybe this time things will be different. And if not, there are strong competitive options.

I’ve been looking forward to something like this but I’m not in any of the battery systems with a full size router. There’s been a few random social media posts about the DeWalt DCW620 but I can’t find any official information on it.

I have a few of the dw618 kits and the dust collection through the post is indeed nice. I love that the hose points up so it’s easier to keep out of the way.
I can easily see a couple of these dewalt routers making it into my arsenal.

It’s legit, I don’t think they’ve “officially” announced it yet though. It will be one of those products that will be on shelves for a month before they release an official press release. But I like what I see.

Makita has a track adapter. It works on my metabo hpt 36v router. The metabo adjustable fence fits with my 40v trim router plunge base (I believe it’s the same base as the lxt plunge base).
I wouldn’t be surprised if the milwaukee track adapter fit too.
Also based on the picture, it looks like the dust collection attachment for the trim router plunge base would fit the full size router too.
This new xgt router seems great, but it will probably a lot more expensive than the metabo hpt

At the end you can see he’s cutting out a square hole with the flush cut bit. 0:48 is the start of that I believe.
Also I watched that whole video only to see the guy with the cigarette but never saw it…….

Hey, is this router actually the one rated for Ip56? The ipx4 rating is 0 water 4 dust.. which does t make sense when they show a wet router… I would try and help more, but my Japanese is non existant

Makita Japan (but not USA) literature for the battery lists it as IP56 rated. Translation software isn’t working perfectly, but shows the IPX4 and IP56 rating as being for the “body” and battery. Thus, it seems the router is the one with IPX4 rating.

The first digit is for dust, the second for water.

Porter Cable offered a 19.2 way back.
Offering a plunge base only, is great for the user….however less income for the company.
Most serious users have to buy upgraded kits,or an additional plunge base.

The Metabo HPT and this Makita are plunge base only, there will be no fixed base, as the router does not come apart.
The plunge base does everything the fixed base does, provided the locking mechanism is secure. Yes, a fixed base would be more trustworthy for permanent router table use, but a traditional corded router would be a better choice for that.
The upcoming Dewalt also looks to have an integral plunge mechanism and no fixed base.
Given the use case of a cordless ‘jobsite router’, (Makita looks to have picked up on the trend of framers cutting out windows with a flush trim bit) I believe the extra expense and hassle of storing interchangeable bases would not be worth it.
