Makita MakPac Tool Box

A Makita ImpactX screwdriver bit set arrived today, nicely packaged in one of their tool boxes.

I posted about the Makita tool boxes before, but this was my first hands-on experience. I learned 4 things.

1. The design is licensed. It says so at the rear of the tool boxes, similar to Bosch’s L-Boxxes. I didn’t know this, but it makes me feel a lot better about the products.

2. It’s quite nice. That was my first impression, but it was positive enough to inspire a quick post about the boxes.

3. I haven’t tested it yet, but the description says that these Makita boxes are:

Compatible with SP6000J/J1 system, Festool Sustainer cases and other similar modular storage systems.

That’s good to know, that these are Systainer-compatible. It’ll attach below newer T-Loc Systainers, similar to what you would to to stack older and newer Systainer designs together.

4. They’re lower priced than I reported in the past, and remember seeing them sell for. As of the time of this posting:

  • Small: $28
  • Medium: $30
  • Large: $33
  • X-Large: $43

These are now considerably less expensive than other modular tool storage boxes, except Dewalt’s TStak, but I think these are a step better.

Interesting – especially if they mate well into a Festool Stack as a lower cost alternative to a systainer.

What is it that you don’t like about the Tstak boxes? The latches ? I checked the l-boxx before buying the Tstak and I prefer the Tstak, More options, stronger and cheaper. I especially love the drawers to store fasteners. The only thing I don’t like about them is they didn’t design the feet properly so if you put a drawer unit at the bottom, it drags a bit.

They’re decent, but I like nearly all of the other modular tool box systems better. I was disappointed with the drawer units, and the other units don’t vary enough to accommodate a wide range of cordless power tools and hand tools. I think they’re a little small.

I do really like the long top handle model.

I have a few of the older Festool systainers as well as a couple of Makita MakPacs and they interconnect with no problems, top or bottom. Also, those prices have been at that point for awhile now.

Did they fix the latches yet? I have one that came with my track saw and the latches are so tight that it hurts you’re fingers or it’s just easier to use a screwdriver to pry them open. Pain in the rear. Maybe I got a bad one? Been meaning to file/sand the plastic down to ease the friction when opening.

I feel the same way about my tracksaw box latches, so you’re not alone!

I’ve got two of the old style Mirka Systainers with the same sort of latches, and they are the same. Really, really hard on the fingers to open. I’m sure the long time Fesfools could tell us if they loosen up over time with enough use.

      Their latches still are awful…

Dab a little Vaseline on the inside of the latches. That’ll fix it right up.

These are made by Tanos and are the older systainers, so they aren’t just compatible, they are them. If that helps someone make a decision, it’s at least good to know!

Possibly, I don’t know, but I can tell you that even if Tanos did make these, the molds would be different. They’re similar but not identical to the older Systainers.

If Tanos made these, it might have their name somewhere, rather than a “Licenses by…” label.

They were all ordered via Amazon, but wouldn’t think that would make a difference

I think Makpacs are one of the most horrible boxes I’ve ever seen. I find their latches being total garbage.

These plastic tool boxes are quite pricey . Better to look for used steel boxes if u can find them .

These are terrible all due to the latches being garbage. They are much worse than the old Tanos/Festool classic systainers.

I much prefer the DeWalt Tstak boxes, even if there isn’t enough size options.

What brand uses the best type of plastic. Fest tool Bosch makita seem to use the same noisy flimsy hard plastic. Dewalt and Milwaukee seem similar. .. softer stronger and less brittle and also less tinny! I am not referring to any blow mold stuff.
