This Milwaukee 2695-29 cordless combo kit looks to provide a lot of bang for the buck. Even if you consider that the 9-tool set comes with 7 “real” tools and 2 accessories (the blower and LED worklight), that’s still less than $100 per tool, without even thinking about the batteries or charger.
After I learned about the combo from Phil, I saw a Home Depot promo email, with this banner. Apparently this is a limited time online exclusive. According to the product page, the deal ends 12/6/15, unless of course it sells out sooner.

This looks like a good deal to me, but what do you think?
I tried to dig up more info about this Milwaukee 2695-29 M18 combo, but judging by the few results, this seems to be a new and possibly Home Depot-exclusive combo set that was specially put together for the holiday season.

It sure looks like a good deal if you need(want?) these tools. Compared to the similarly priced 6 tool set at ToolUp – selling for a special price of $589 you get some different and extra tools – 3.0AH batteries vs. 2.4 and an extra tool bag.

The images might not be accurate, but if they are, that ToolUp combo has the older versions of Milwaukee’s M18 brushed motor hammer drill and impact driver.

I’m not so savvy regarding model #’s but here’s what ToolUp says is included:
“6-tool Combo Kit includes the 1/2″ Hammer Drill / Driver (2602-20), Sawzall® Recip Saw (2620-20), Circular Saw (2630-20), 1/4″ Hex Impact Driver (2650-20), 4.5″ Cut-Off/Grinder (2680-20), and Work Light (49-24-0171).”
It’s a bit of an Apples and Oranges comparison – but I think it reinforces the notion that the HD kit is a good deal.

I purchased the Ridgid Gen5X combo tool set with the multi tool fro $450. This set does come with 2 – 4ah batteries. The circular saw, hammer drill and impact driver are newer with the mag motors. Lifetime warranty with the on line registration.
Didn’t consider Milwaukee due to price until now. These tools will be used to remodel houses on the side (a lot more than the general homeowner use). Should I return the Ridgid set and go with a brand most everyone recommends with the 3ah batteries or stick with Ridgid supplied with the 4ah batteries who has come a long way in the cordless tools based on the reviews I read. Please let me know your thoughts!!!
Based on my very short ownership of Ridgid, it seems to be a solid set (maybe a little heavy though). Not sure of the weights for other sets. Until now, I only bought lower priced brands without additional cordless tools.

$450 for the Ridgid 5 Tool and a Jobmax?
If that was the case, I doubt I’d pay an extra $150 for the Milwaukee. There probably aren’t a lot of tools you really need or even want after this “starter” set. You might want an angle grinder or random orbit sander, which both brands have. Don’t be nervous about Ridgid’s quality – they’ll be fine, especially in comparison to Milwaukee. It’s just that Milwaukee has a bigger lineup, which gives one more options that one may never even use….
You’d basically be paying $150 more for a right-angle drill (not really a priority, plus you can convert your jobmax into one for $50), an impact wrench (up to you, doubt most people use them much), and a blower (kind of nice, but probably too weak to serve much use.)
The 1A/h of battery won’t make much of a difference either. I’d be more interested in getting a third battery (1 in the tool I’m using, 1 in the radio, and 1 on the charger).

Thank you for the feedback! All very good points and now I’m leaning on keeping the Ridgid set due to your feedback and Nathan’s. I was defiantly nervous with Ridgid; however, when I read your replies, it changed my opinion.
As for someone stealing my tools, I wouldn’t be working on a job site and I believe most people who would steal these tools would do it regardless of name for a couple of dollars.
ToolGuyd wrote a great review on what tool sets to recommend and I believe his response was Milwaukee, Dewalt and then Ridgid. Considering the Milwaukee set probably has outdated (thanks Nathan) tools, it probably doesn’t make sense to change. Not to mention, the lifetime warranty on the batteries for Ridgid is unbelievable even if I decide to purchase a 3rd and possibly a 4th battery. I believe the additional batteries will only have a 3 year warranty which appears to be the same as the other brands.

I wouldn’t sweat it. Rigid has pretty good tools and these aren’t premium Fuel models here for the Milwaukee set. When i settle down and buy into an 18V line, it will probably be Ryobi or Rigid in spite of the fact that i have mostly M12 Fuel tools so far. There’s a lot to be said for having some more powerful tools that you aren’t worried to abuse or get grungy or have someone steal. My roommate who works all the time on remodeling and odd jobs only buys Ryobi for exactly that reason: if someone sees Milwaukee tools, you become a thief magnet.

As a satisfied M18 owner, I strongly suggest you hold onto the Ridgid kit if you don’t want more tools than you currently have. The quality for the Ridgid Gen5x is definitely above the stuff in this M18 9pc set, which consists of a lot of stuff that has been around for years (that Milwaukee is probably trying to clear out).
However, the M18 line is huge, well built, and has a lot applications, many of which Ridgid will probably never offer. Moreover, the latest M18 fuel stuff beats Ridgid Gen5x by a good margin.
If you forsee yourself buying tools not offered by Ridgid, go with the M18. If not, hold onto your Gen5x stuff.

I missed this response prior to replying to Sean and Nathan. All good points that continue to reinforce my decision to stay with the Ridgid set. I really don’t care to have the latest and greatest of everything even though the brushless hammer drill and impact gun would have probably pushed me to spend more if it came in the same kit that I purchased. The most important thing to me is to have a set that will be reliable and will not fall apart after a year or two once I commit to spending several hundred dollars.
If I were to spend a couple of hundred dollars for brands that had numerous tools in their sets, then I would expect to replace them as they wear out. But I decided to spend a little more money on what appears to be a quality set which always makes me nervous. Now I have to start using them!

This is a good deal for the price, but I bet many of the models featured here are slated for replacement sometime soon.
