To start, buy a Milwaukee M18 Quik-Lok kit, which comes with the power base handle, string trimmer, 8.0Ah High Output battery, and charger, and choose another M18 Quik-Lok attachment for free.
The string trimmer has a 14″ to 16″ cutting swath and works with 0.080″ or 0.095″ line.

I wish more companies would offer a cordless edger option. I don’t want to have to get onto a whole new platform and buy a redundant string trimmer (already have Flexvolt).

My impression is that DeWalt isn’t so interested in the lawn/garden work market, the way Milwaukee, Ryobi, and maybe Ego are.

Well, Ego is an OPE brand, so they are very different from the rest.
Ryobi being more of a DIY/homeowner brand will offer more OPE because that is who they are catering to, homeowners.
Dewalt and Milwaukee are professional power tool brands that offer some OPE. Both offer blowers and chainsaws. Dewalt has mowers, Milwaukee does not. Milwaukee has a modular attachment system, Dewalt does not (they do however have dedicated versions of all but the edger). Overall, I would say Dewalt and Milwaukee have the same, or at least very similar, interest in the lawn/garden work market.

An edger would be nice. Also, I would love to see them pair up some of the new battery tech with the MTD brands. A cordless dethatcher or plug aerator on Flexvolt batteries would be awesome. Not sure what the run time would be like, but that might actually get me to stop renting them every year and actually buy one. It’s just not worth all the maintenance for gas powered items the average homeowner will use 1-2 times per year. The Sunjoe and Greenworks corded electric dethatchers are pretty nice though and have proven there is a market for that type of OPE that is priced for the homeowner rather than the pro user.

Not much in the Seattle area, either. I went by the local Lowes yesterday around 11 AM and there was NO PARKING, not due to Covid, but due to the parking lot and store were PACKED OUT! Everyone is “Sheltering at home” AND going to their local DIY store to make purchases.

Just bought the trimmer, hedger, pole saw, and extension (don’t need the edger).
Everything is great, but do note that the hedger with extension is crazy heavy. I read all the reviews and saw the weight mentioned multiple times, but now that I’ve got it I can see what they mean.
Otherwise it’s great. It’s so nice to do yard work in relative silence.
I’ll probably attach LED’s so I can work at night like with the battery lawn mower.
I just have to suffer the weird looks I get…

Good to know about the weight. Bought the trimmer, hedger, extension. My first Milwaukee tools (only because of the discount and expected quality – hope I like it, first buy) Homeonwer here more in the Ryobi “camp”, I’d guess, but my hedges ar 12-15′ and I was set to buy top shelf, either Husqvarna or Stihl but they are really tight on how to buy their lineup and make it inconvenient – especially now.
First Tool Nut order, too – I hope the affiliate funds go through to toolguyd – I used the link above. I also hope Tool Nut gets this stuff shipped asap, there was no indication of delivery times at checkout. Then at email receipt I they say the extension attachement is two weeks out, their estimate, but I need it with the other two pieces. Not sure I would have placed the order knwoing that up front.
(I’m sitting on a new Ryobi pole saw with no battery becuase (Home Depot promo toolguyd link) have yet to ship the battery promo)
Was really disappointed with Milwaukee last year – I would have bought the entire Quik-Lok setup if they offered a bundle, the whole enchilada for the homeowner. Swore them off for seemingly, to me, weak marketing. But here we go, giving it whirl.
For the house/yard I’ve got 12V Bosch, 12V Ryobi, and now this M18 Quicklok.

What’s the weight on the pole saw? Comparable to a gas one or lighter? I’ve got a Stihl Kombi that is heavy for me but I deal with it because it’s been super reliable. Looking at getting something for a family member that doesn’t want to deal with gas stuff anymore though and where weight might be an issue. Thank you!

Here in Canada KMS tools is running a pretty good Makita promotion. They have a whole bunch of options. The one that caught my eye for smaller yards is a 18v string trimmer bare tool that’s $20 off but also comes with two 3ah batteries, a dual charger and a 18v blower free.
