When we posted about Milwaukee’s new Packout compact tool box, a reader predicted that a cooler would soon follow.

This would be a perfect canvas for a jobsite hard cooler/lunch pail. Big enough for food and drinks/Thermos, as well as some extra room for little ancillary things that one might want to keep in there. Maybe some storage in the underside of the lid for keys/wallet…

Well, you’re right!

Milwaukee is coming out with a new compact Packout cooler, model 48-22-8460, with 16Q capacity.

As you could surmise, the new Packout cooler is designed to keep things cool. It’s said to be able to hold ice for up to 30 hours.

The new Milwaukee Packout hard-shell cooler features an interior storage tray, IP65 rating for water and dust resistance, and it said to be impact-resistant and able to withstand even the harshest jobsite enivornments.

There’s a bottle opener built into the front.

Compatible with Milwaukee’s Packout modular tool storage system, the new cooler fits in right at home at the top of a stack.

Or, you can place it next to a similarly-sized compact tool box or combination of half-width organizers, and connect more Packout products on top.

This  brings the number of Milwaukee Packout products to 20. For convenience, I’ll include a list at the end of the post.

Milwaukee Packout Compact Cooler and Tool Box Bundle

Acme Tools also has a bundle set, which includes the compact cooler and a compact tool box. It doesn’t look like you save any money with this bundle, but it might be worth watching in case that changes. Even if not, the two go together nicely, thanks to their similar size and footprint.

Discussion

The price difference between tool box and insulated cooler is $40, but that could be justifiable if you like the form factor. I think the large handle and the cooler’s shape will likely make it quite popular.

The only thing I can’t shake is how the combination of red and white makes the cooler look more like a medical cooler or other such device. Maybe the shape exaggerates it? There are other red and white coolers that don’t give me the same visual resemblance.

I am actually surprised the inside liner is not white.
Makes it easier to keep things spotless inside.

Just the lid is white for best thermal performance possible. Thats where coolers need the most insulation/thermal brake from the sun.

Because the sun is at the zenith shining straight down all day?

I really doubt that’s the driving reason for a white lid but leaving the body of the cooler red.

Yes, making the outside white helps reflect sunlight and keep it cooler.

But making the inside white would have no effect either way.

And I agree, a white interior would be nice, both for cleanliness and for improved visibility in dark tents or shady spots (where these coolers would naturally spend most of the day. The red interior isn’t terrible, though.

I love the packout system, will buy this! Having bought quite a few of these one thing kind of bothers me: they use different plastics of different composition, over time some of it turns pink. My handle of the bottom is discolored, I would prefer white, black, yellow, or blueish green. It is minor, but usually their injection molding, over molding and material sourcing is near perfect.

Half the size of the Dewalt tough system cooler. Too bad its not half the price. I guess all that disruptive innovation costs money haha. Nah I get it tho. If your into the packout system it makes sense.

Small size looks good for the work week. Perfect for a sandwich and water/gatorade. Tray keeps your sandwich out of the ice water.

I think a larger size one would sell too. Something that will fit lots of beer and chips for the weekend.

Im just dissapointed I missed the sale on the Dewalt cooler for $50. Ill keep rocking my oldscool playmate. I am too cheap to drop $100 on a cooler. However I know there is a market for luxury coolers like Yeti. So I bet this one does well.

A $100 cooler is moving into Yeti territory.

Maybe Yeti will come out with a Packout-compatible cooler.

The least expensive Yeti is a 24Q that costs twice as much.

I like the size of this one for work. The tough system and versastack coolers are too big for anything less than a full work crew

ToughSystem is big if you’re lugging it around but not bad if it’s staying in your work vehicle. It’s not much bulkier than a 20 qt Pelican I used for years; by the time you have a day’s worth of freeze packs/ice in them you lose a lot of space.

Serious question, why would you buy this (or other tool companies’ branded coolers) rather than a real cooler from a real brand like RTIC or Coleman?

That’s hard to say. Which 16 quart cooler might you buy instead of this one?

The biggest benefit is that the cooler stacks with your tool boxes, but it also looks to be a convenient form factor.

I’m with the Ape here: pricey. In fact, a lot of Milwaukee seems to be reaching out-of-my-reach territory. Love it, but I love Corvettes and Cadillacs as well, and I am not scheduling any test drives soon.

I’d wager the lid is white simply for visual ID purposes. When you load up the packout stack with so many individual boxes and crates, it handy to be able to quickly ID one from another unless you’re marking them otherwise. Sitting side by side with that new toolbox, it almost indistinguishable save for the contrasting lids and “White top” is universal for “cooler” these days.

Why do they always come out with this stuff AFTER I need it? Lol. Bought a 20qt rotomolded for the jobsite shortly after I had made that comment that Stuart posted. Just a bit too big and bulky. Looks like I need to buy into the Packout system.

One thing I noticed on the Tool but link is in one of the photos the cooler has a low profile organizer latched onto the bottom. This to me would seem like a neat feature to be able to do. Allow one to keep their foodstuff and other needs separate, yet still in the same “package”

When will they make a rolling cooler for those tailgates and beach/boat days? I’ve got a RTIC 20qt, but would prefer similar size or slightly larger with wheels.

I almost bought this just because it’s PACKOUT and won’t slip off the stack while pulling everything up stairs and over uneven ground. However I didn’t because of the 30 hour ice rating and reading reviews which place this rating at closer to 15 hours at a job site in the sun in Texas. And yes, a white lid matters a lot when the cooler is sitting in the sun. Dark colors make nice ovens in the sun whether it’s a car/truck or a cooler. Leaving this cooler in a vehicle in the southern sun will reduce the rated time even further (170 degrees in a closed vehicle sitting in the sun, might as well store your cooler+ lunch in an oven) https://www.carrentals.com/blog/temperature-inside-car/

I’d like to see longer times similar to the Coleman cooler “Extreme” line, at least one of which claims 5-day ice rating. Think of packing the cooler with drinks/food the night before and having your PACKOUT stack staged and ready to go the next morning (when I’m usually not thinking as clearly). Yes, I could put this cooler in the fridge, making it one more thing I might forget in the morning. Think I’d remember to look at a checklist? Nah

I still might buy it, but it’s on the wait until I really need it category.
