Olight S1R II LED Flashlight

As mentioned in my post the other day, my formal introduction to Olight and their LED flashlights has been an eye-opener and a great experience so far.

About this post – keep reading if you want the why about the discount, or scroll down to skip straight to the point.

I’ve been using and testing two Olight S1R Baton II flashlights – one of their most popular models – and can’t believe I hesitated to jump on the rechargeable battery flashlight bandwagon for so long.

Oh, there are definitely still reasons to stick with other kinds of LED flashlights, such as AA, AAA, and CR123A, but moving to a rechargable 16340 Li-ion battery platform was remarkably effortless and thought-free.

I spent much time this past week selecting and ordering a range of other LED flashlights for review, as it’s been quite some time since I’ve learned the ins and outs of new models, and as much as it might not seem like it, LED flashlight and illumination tech has changed a lot in just a few years.

What all that research and scrutiny of spec sheets showed me is that Olight is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to move from home center flashlights to something more compact and better featured for day to day use.

Olight’s flash sale would have been a great opportunity for some of you to get in on the action, to experience the transition to a compact Li-ion-powered EDC LED flashlight as I have. Or, for those of you already using 18650 and other Li-ion-powered flashlights, the Baton II seems like a great compact choice nonetheless.

The sale ended very quickly – by 4am or so, and that’s after their website experienced some downtime due to the sheer number of customers trying to order the limited edition lights that were on sale.

Not to mince words, I was pretty disappointed. I don’t like to feature, discuss, promote – call it what you will – flash sales that end very quickly. I had anticipated that the deals would last the day, but quantities were rapidly depleted. I suppose this is a good sign – a brand whose products fly off the shelf is usually popular for good reasons.

I spoke with my Olight contact, and here’s the good news – they granted my request of a coupon code, which is valid site-wide except on sale items or the X9R Marauder.

Deal Details

Save 10% on Olight orders via the link below.

Exclusions: Sale items and X9R Marauder.

As of this time, there is no expiration date (which I didn’t expect but am happy for), and there doesn’t seem to be any minimum order requirements.

Shipping is free on $49+ orders, or a flat $5 below.

Recommendations

I’m really liking the S1R II Baton II flashlight so far. This light comes with everything you need to get started, except for a USB adapter, and most people already have several of those already. It comes with the light, removable clip, a Li-ion battery, and magnetic tailcap charger, plus a lanyard, pouch, and a small carrier for spare batteries.

Olight also has AA and AAA flashlights, as well as larger Li-ion-powered flashlights.

The S1R II Baton is the first light Olight sent me for testing and review, and I think it’ll be a good EDC flashlight for most users. For daily or regular use, you might want something bigger.

Olight flashlights and accessories tend to be price-fixed at most dealers, and so a 10% discount seems like a good deal. Some dealers create their own bundles at list price or slightly higher, but saving more cash in-pocket is worth more than an extra battery or plastic case of their choosing, at least in my opinion.

If you like rechargeable, you should check out the tiny i1R that recharges from a microUSB cable and has two brightness levels.

This is why I am against onlineflash sales. These slash sales often give little information on how long it will last or what quantities. At least with HD, you know it is 24 hours long, and when it starts. Though I suppose that’s not really a flash sale, but similar.

I am confused what the goal is of a flash sale. Is it to reward the people who have bought there stuff, and just happen to check the one of hundreds of emails sent each week (by all retailers), or are they trying to get new customers? Being as dutch as I am, and now knowing what the lowest sale price was for an item, I’ll NEVER pay more than that.
And if a flash sale if for 75% off (ToolBarn last week), wouldn’t you make more people happy offering 40% off the same items. I guarantee they would have all still sold (well maybe a few oddball bits), and you would have connected with more customers. And no is going to complain about 40% off. Your just asking for resellers to purchase at to good of prices.

The purpose of a flash sale is to generate buzz, not to “reward” buyers nor to move product. News of a “70% off sale” would spread farther than news of a “40% off sale.”

I’ve checked Home Depot’s deals everyday for a while, sometimes right after they start if I’m up. I’ve seen sell-outs by 3:10 am, sometimes faster, sometimes a little slower, other times I can’t tell but there are well outs by 8, 9am.

Amazon used to do the same, and I used to stay up or wake up to catch their Friday tool deals at 3am. The best stuff was always sold out before dawn.

I would guess you haven’t used one. I have had one on my key chain for several years and it has proven immensely valuable. It has a very usable beam and has withstood the knock around associated with being on my key chain. I bought one for every member of my family (wife and 2 adult sons).

I got it’s “turbo” precessor a few years ago. I have loved it. I ended up ordering three more – two on behalf of people who saw me using it repeatedly and they paid me back for it and one as a gift. I later lost a bag with mine in it and got two later versions. I fully believe they are worth it. I am a bit of an EDC geek, so that it decent praise. I have quite a few other flashlights, including Olight, and this is my go-to favorite.

If you are buying some for testing you could look at the braun 3 in 1 work light from harbor freight. it uses a protected 18650 and has 3 quick connectable heads. there is a coupon on hfqpdb.com for it for $39.99. I know alot of users may be interested in the comparison between the high end lights you are looking at and a “cheap” light from harbor freight. I bought one and it has quickly become my most favorite flashlight.

I ordered one with the coupon. Thanks for arranging this.

I will report back once I get it and have some thoughts.

      Initial impressions:

      – Smaller that I was expecting
      – Very bright, very very bright in turbo mode
      – I like the magnetic base, plan to use that to mount it.
      – Not sure I like the use of the switch to get to multiple modes, it’s going to be hard to remember unless I use it all of the time.
      – Appears to be very high quality.
      – I don’t care for the belt clip very much, might remove it.

No experience how long it lasts before need to be recharged.

Overall: high quality, works well, a lot of light in a small package, expensive.

I love rechargeable battery flashlights, 18650 Li-ion, of course. I dislike rechargeable flashlights. I guess it’s not that offputting to plug a phone charger into a flashlight, but I just don’t like it. I like having my mighty lineup of salvaged high output 18650 cells at the ready to pop in and recharging at my leisure.
