The design reminds me of some kind of space gun. I could see all those “fins” collecting a lot of debris. If the driver got used much, it might just look like a forgotten kids toy that’s been left lying around outdoors.

I bought one of these, the last time They were on sale. Had a local store that price matched, plus let me use a coupon, so got it for about $70 or so in round numbers, and it was a good deal then. It is a STEAL for $50, IMO. I wanted a drill, impact driver, with 3 batteries, and the cheapest way to do it at the time was to get the drill for $70, then the impact driver kit with two batts (and fast charger) for $99.
I keep my cordless drill in a cabinet, so the box was a non issue for me. A few observations, though. The charger works well, is incredibly compact, but is a slow charger. Takes about 2 hours and 15-20 minutes to fully charge a dead battery. Next is no kit box. My impact came with a nice box that held the impact, fast charger and two batteries (bonus, the drill fits in the box, too). Lastly, this package does not include the pouch-pocket clip that the kit with the box and 2 batts does (if that is important to you).
The drill itself is excellent, I’ve used it quite a bit now, and the only gripe I have is the chuck occasionally will need to be snugged up in use. it does look a little space-gun-ish but is comfortable to use, and has nice little features like rubber bumpers, to prevent scratching finished surfaces if you lay it on its side, and magnetic bit holders, which I have found that I like better than the clip type on my old drill. It has enough power to drill 7/8 holes through RR ties which kind of surprised me, as light and compact as it is. If you are OK with a slow charger, I don’t see how you can beat that deal. It comes with the compact battery, not the hi-cap, but life is decent, got out on par with the compact 18v DeWalts I have used. Just a bare PC 20v compact battery runs over $40, so you are getting the drill and charger for under $10, if you want to look at it that way.

Funny how time change. The first cordless drill that I bought for work was a Porter Cable 12V Magnequench. We had looked at 9.6V Makitas – but waited on the PC. I think we ended up buying a dozen or so of them. It came in basic black with a metal case, 2 batteries and a slow charger. I’m guessing that the kit cost at least $200 – and I just saw one listed on ebay:

Are some of you buying drills to make holes or as a handsome centerpiece for your next party? Anything in the Hitachi line looks more “space gunnish” than this. If you plan on framing it, buy for beauty. If you plan on drilling holes with it, check out the specs.

While this may not be on the “Pro” end of the line, it’d be hard to beat it for the money. I can see the dirt collection issue, but it’s certainly not a bad looking tool.

Robert you say it’s not pro grade then I guess Milwaukee isn’t either because I went up against my brothers m18 compact drill and this drill blew it away

How did you go up against it? Holes in wood? Tying chucks together, what?

Anybody know if this drill and battery are compatible with the 18v drill, battery & charger?

Same cause 18v and 20v are the same voltage in LiIons.

          Yes, 20V Max is Porter Cable/Dewalt/Black & Decker/Stanley FatMax/Bostitch’s marketing way of saying 18V.

But Porter Cable purposely designed their 20V Max Li-ion tools and batteries to not fit their 18V Li-ion/NiCad tools and batteries.

            Ah, got it.

Even so, compatibility could have caused potential issues. The 20V Li-ion charger wouldn’t have worked with the 18V NiCad batteries, and there could have been issues pairing NiCad batteries with the 20V Max tools.

I’m only saying that Porter Cable themselves places this in their more consumer oriented line. I’m not suggesting that it doesn’t perform well. There’s nothing in my post that implied that. In fact, it would be one of my first choices in a lineup of similarly priced items.

I’m only stating facts. It doesn’t fall into the professional category of Porter Cable’s line. That doesn’t make it cheap, nor is there anything wrong with it. That’s just how it’s classified. The pro end of their line are simply better tools.

I use a DeWalt pro model 18v drill a lot, also, and I agree with your assessment. The DW has a 3 speed gearbox, the PC a 2 speed. The DW has more torque in low, more RPMs in high. The battery that comes in this kit is a compact battery, about on par or slightly better than the DW compact battery, but nothing compared to the XRP battery on the pro DW. The DW also has a chuck that stays tight all day, the Pc occasionally works loose if you let the clutch rattle too much when the screw is driven (hey, I had free help, at least they didn’t twist anything off).
However, at the end of the day, both me and my helper were wanting to use the PC over the DW, because it was just so much lighter and more compact. Yes, the pro DW outperforms it, but for just running railing screws, the PC was the preferred tool. Now running the 7/8 spade bit, the Pc coud turn it in low, and slowly chew throughg even a RR tri, but the DW could drill the same hole in medium (2nd) gear, and do it maybe 1/3 faster. Both have comfortable grips/handles, but the lighter weight of the PC made it less tiring at the end of the day. I put the belt clip on mine, and it hangs from a tool belt pouch tolerably. A bit heavy, but always there when I needed it. The DW is just too heavy for that sort of thing. As small and light as it is, I almost consider this Pc drill to be more like a 12v max on steroids, than a pro level 20v max tool.

Will the deWalt 20 v. Max batteries fit the Porter-Cable 20 v. Max tools? I have two of the deWalt 20 v. tools, but the PC circ. saw is half the price of the deWalt.

No the Dewalt batteries are not interchangeable with the PC 20v batteries. You might be able the find the Dewalt saw cheaper on Ebay.
