New Porter Cable 20V Cost-Cutting Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit

Porter Cable PCCK604L2 20V Drill Impact Driver Combo Kit

A couple of months ago, Porter Cable came out with a new 20V Max cordless drill and impact driver kit, model PCCK604L2. From what I can tell, this is designed to be a lower cost alternative to their PCCK602L2 kit.

This kit comes with the PCC601 drill/driver, PCC641 impact driver, (2) PCC681L Li-ion batteries, and a PCC691 charger.

Compared to the standard PCC600 drill/driver, the PCC601 drill is less powerful (282 UWO vs. 330 UWO, where UWO is Dewalt’s “unit watts out standard”), slower (0-350/0-1500 RPM vs. 0-400/0-1600 RPM), and longer (8.25″ vs. 7.6″). It also lacks some of the nice smaller features of the regular drill, such as the belt hook and magnetic bit storage slot.

Compared to the standard PCC640 impact driver, the PCC641 is just as powerful (1450 in-lbs), nearly as fast (0-2800 RPM vs. 0-2900 RPM, 0-3100 BPM), and slightly longer (6.9″ vs. 6.2).

The product description says that both tools feature a built-in battery fuel gauge, but the manual’s don’t mention or show this, and if there are gauges, they’re not in the same places as on the regular models.

The two included battery packs have 1.3Ah capacity (the regular ones have 1.5Ah cells), and the charger probably takes longer to recharge a drained battery pack.

Right now, this special combo is priced at $129, and the regular kit is priced at $159. If you’re looking to buy into Porter Cable’s lineup, you get a lot more with the regular kit. Still, $30 might seem like a big difference, and the price gap might widen if the special combo kit is discounted further for Black Friday or the coming holiday shopping season.

If you ask me, I’d go for the regular kit, and not this one. Something about how the tools, battery, and charger have been cheapified makes me a little hesitant. But then again, I no longer have the stringent tool budget I was once limited too.

I consider the long term cost with batteries as well. I’ve found PC to be pricier than Bosch, or at least some of them. I’d rather not have the tool be disposable because the battery replacement cost may be as much a new kits.

Im not sure who they are trying to target with these, the normal ones are pretty good and you can usually get them for a good deal if you look around.

Im kinda hoping for a deal on their new 20vmax hammerdrill.

I’m thinking it’s aimed at users who look at pricing first and last.

This kit also looks to be on Lowes’ Black Friday deals roster.

I’m a DeWalt & Milwaukee guy but $90 for 2 drills is a great set for handyman jobs.
