First Thoughts

I initially thought that the new Porter Cable impact wrench was adapted from Dewalt’s DW292 design ($149 via Amazon), but the PC version looks a little different and has a less powerful motor. There are a few other differences, such as a hog ring anvil vs. pin detent. The PC version will also be $30 cheaper.

In a conversation with Porter Cable’s handheld power tool product manager, it became clear that the brand has a renewed focus. Their aim is to offer tradesmen the tools they need most, at prices that won’t make them cringe.

This new impact doesn’t have fancy features, and it isn’t best-in-class in any category, especially power, but it has appeal in a gets the job done without breaking the bank kind of way.

It has the same basic specs as the Harbor Freight electric impact. I have been using the HF one for ~3 years and it does what I need it to do. If I was in the market for one though, I would not hesitate to pay $119 for the PC model.

    Stuart,

What is the PC product team saying about the “motors” i.e. who is making the motors for PC (Johnson, PC or “old” DeWalt motors)? This looks like the “old” DeWalt impact from the late 90’s/2000’s….
