It’s safe to say just about all chainsaws leak oil if there left full. That’s been my experience anyways.

I bought the Oregon CS 1500, with the self sharpening device. It is also a plug in and it works quite well for around home. I also purchased the self sharpening bar and blade from Oregon for my grandpa’s husquavarna and it is also quite impressive. No regrets.

I have a Poulan (gas powered) chain saw as well and that one doesn’t seem to leak chain oil very much. I had an ancient (now deceased Black & Decker and that one leaked like crazy). My current pole saw (Portland) also leaks like crazy but i see from the design it is nothing but a weep hole that drips continuously on the chain while running.
I asked a friend with much more serious chain saws, including Husqvarna and Stihl and he tells me the best saws he hasn’t seen as much of a problem. I do take his advice and wipe down the bar and chain after use.

Yes, that is a great saw and yes again, leaking chainsaws when oil is topped off seems to be a very common things across the board.

Home Depot rents these exact saws for about $50/day. So that should show that at sub $200 that is not a bad deal if you use it 4 times vs renting, and that it is probably pretty durable as it has to stand up to the world of rental tools.

By the time you buy a 50′ quality (yellow jacket, Ridgid) cord and add it to the price you could have bought a cordless chainsaw and had the batteries for other tools.

The main reason to own an electric chainsaw is simple: If you don’t use them frequently, gas engines and premixed fuel are a pain to deal with. If I used a chainsaw twice a year, I’d go electric.
We have about 4 months a year when they can’t be used, due to fire restrictions, but I use mine enough to stick with gas.
Electrics are tempting, and I assume the cordless units will only get better.

True, but if you’re not otherwise using Makita’s 18V system, you’re spending money on equipment you won’t fully utilize. Pros and cons on either side.
I just had to recycle a battery pack that went bad from disuse.
If you don’t use cordless tools, or bought into another brand, going corded for something like this can mean lower maintenance, despite having to deal with a cord.

I’ve been going back and forth about buying a Makita cordless chainsaw (since I’m on this battery platform) or buying a gas powered Stihl.
I’ve often thought of battery powered tools as being somewhat disposable when they break. In my experience the replacement parts can be so expensive that you might as well just buy a new tool instead of fixing them. Gas engines parts seem to be pretty cheap and the engines tend to be very reliable with Stihl.
For my needs I’m sure the Makita would work just fine and have enough power, but my concern is long term ownership over 20-30 years. Will I still be using the same battery platform for that long? Will batteries in the future still be compatable?
My hope is to buy a chainsaw that might last the rest of my life (I’m 37) if it’s only used occasionally. My dad has owned an Echo chainsaw for 20-30+ years and it still works great.

I’ll probaly always have a cordless electric since mine saved me big time. I had a tree fall and block the driveway and my stihl wouldn’t start but the little 10inch Ryobi 18v very slowly let me clear the tree.
