Earlier today I learned about several new Ridgid 18V Octane brushless cordless power tools that are coming out soon. The new additions add to a growing lineup of Octane-branded cordless tools, including the new Ridgid 18V MegaMax modular tool.
First, there’s a new one-handed reciprocating saw. What’s interesting, at least to me, is the angle of the tool and orientation of the grip.

There’s also a new Ridgid 18V 3-1/4″ brushless hand planer.
Lastly, a new Octane brushless 1/4 sheet sander. Ridgid also already offers a brushed motor 5″ random orbit sander and a brushless belt sander.
Now also seems like a fitting time to remind you about Ridgid’s brushless compact router and brushless HyperDrive air-like nailers.
I’m sorry that this is all we know right now, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

And, there’s also a new Ridgid Gen5X Octane brushless jigsaw. It features a variable speed dial, variable speed trigger, lock-on button, no-tool blade changes, adjustable orbital action, sight line blower, and a “line-start” speed setting that starts the saw slower until it engages with the workpiece.

You ever take a close look at a Ridgid cordless tool? They look like final prototypes. The plastic has rough edges, the battery compartment has two single contacts for voltage, no temp or overheat sensor contacts and there are gaps so large within the compartment you can see the wires up in the handle…

Meanwhile I have used my two dozen ridgid cordless tools and those of others that have perfect fit and finish, on par with other brands.

Not sure how old Ridgid tools you are using. All my Gen 5 stuff is great, some can square up with lower end-mid grade Milwaukee. I have gotten the temperature sensor to engage on several of my drills.

I haven’t noticed that recently but I will say ridgid tools do seem to have a lessor fit and finish that their milwaukee counterparts.
But they cost less and I’m mostly ok with that. Had I not gone down the Dewalt path I might own ridgid gen 5 cordless stuff today.
OH and I’d like to see them bring out a track saw, and a barrel grip jig, and I’m sure I’ll think of another.

That one handed recip saw might do a better job with elevated tree pruning, as the ordinary recip saw with a pruning blade is not balanced at all towards the end of a one handed cut.

I have been saying the same thing. I even emailed them asking if they have it in the future. With no response back, super unsatisfied with the customer service at that point.

I have emailed them over the last 3 years asking for a cordless portable bandsaw. The response I get is “as of now there is no plans on manufacturing one”. Just got another email back last week same response.

Don’t let the email incident persuade you too much. I own 14 cordless tools and several plug in tools including a ridgid shopvac. I’ve had a battery fail after a year. I called they sent me a new one immediately. My vacuum hose broke, they sent me a new one immediately. I feel they do stand behind their product and they’ll rectify any problems that arise.

Can someone post close-ups of business end of battery and skid plate?
The internal photo of 5Ah battery in Toolguyd shows a siderib on the contact.
You’ll see the clips that make contact with the battery pins have a cross pattern.
I have discovered my R86011 impact 1/2″(Gen5x brushless, but not Octane) has four wires going to the skid and there are two C shaped contacts with thin(24-26 awg) wires either sides of the main power contacts. I believe these make contact with the side ribs and the side rib pass through the cross like the neutral prong of a 20A plug. I’m not sure if these side ribs are only used for reading the battery voltage at the pack under load or if it instructs the controller about the maximum available power from the battery.

Too bad the recip saw doesn’t have the form-factor of the old Ridgid corded Fuego. It had its fans for on-handed operation and the blade was a bit more inline than this new offerig:

I really liked the inline grip, but that bent wire cutting “shoe” is horrible. It’s the only thing I would change on that saw.

I would like to see more OPE. I am pretty sure that because of their LSA that this will probably never happen, but I would like to see a string trimmer especially. if you look at AEG’s website they do have 18v OPE like string trimmers and even chainsaws. they also have an 18v chemical sprayer, caulking gun, 7″ grinder, and 10″ miter saw. some of these tools I don’t understand why they have not brought them to the US (especially the caulk gun)

The caulk gun in the UK appears as the Ryobi and the biggest distributor for AEG obviously has a sense of humour as their displays of Ryobi and AEG are either right next to each other or back to back.
The only AEG tool I own is labelled as a 12v and dates from when everything was labelled 10.8 it possesses a steel chuck and gears and I remember i bought it because friends we were staying with asked me to help with a project and it was the only lightweight drill in the shop by a producer I had heard of. It was not expensive and still sees use.

I bought the higher end brushless gen 5 hammer drill/ driver kit came with two 4.0 batteries, charger, bag plus a free tool. I got the recip saw and its a BEAST! I abuse the chitlings out of it on 1/8 to3/8 steel every other day. Had one battery go out and Rigid actually replaced it without any threats from my lawyer…

CORDLESS BARREL GRIP!!! I’ve been using Ridgid and Dewalt now for quite awhile now and gotta say that they both have good designs and some duds as well. For me, Dewalt makes the best miter saw and portable table saw. I use Ridgid cordless tools because I feel they are as good but with superior warranty. I have had numerous tools AND batteries replaced for FREE under warranty. You gotta follow their registration rules to a T though otherwise they won’t honor it. Of all the stuff I have owned, I gotta say that nobody makes a good cordless nailer… especially Ridgid. I am a cabinet installer by trade for 25 years and sadly still keep going back to my Air nailer after trying many. I know that Ridgid, Milwaukee and even Ryobi share a number of designs in their lineup. I see that Miwaukee has a nice 18v barrel grip jigsaw… is Ridgid next? They seem to keep reinventing the same tools over and over again. As a professional carpenter, been waiting forever for the barrel grip.
