Its main selling points include over 40% increased airflow and 65% increased suction power compared to its predecessor.
In other words, it’s a much-improved cordless vacuum.

Home Depot has a special buy on a kit featuring the older model, for $79 with a 2Ah battery and charger.
This is just one of many new Ridgid 18V cordless power tools that are soon hitting the market.

one attachment I can think of that might help it – a 4 inch or such wide nozzle with brush attachment.
think – sweep off the work table – hence the brush addition.

Font part and specs look similar to the $35 Ryobi PCL705 (37 CFM, 28 IOW), but the rear is quite different.

BTW, the Metabo HPT 36V wet/dry canister vac looks VERY nice (much nicer than my 3 gal Ryobi wet/dry vac, but then again, it costs a lot more).

18V-class hand vacs can be fairly powerful these days. They’re small and meant for spot cleanup tasks. They’re great if you have reasonable expectations.

The push to release on the tank will be much improved compared to the twist tank on the old version that would come off every time you removed an attachment and spill all the dirt and debris you just meant to pick up.

Are we sure that it’s 40cfm? I have the Ridgid Gen5x vacuum and it’s rated at 150cfm and can pick up liquids. I feel like the last two iterations of this vacuum have been sorely lacking in comparison to their Gen5x line.

That’s what it says in press materials and HD’s retail listings.
The new Dewalt hand vac is rated at 46 CFM. 40 CFM is in the same ballpark and seems reasonable.

Wow, I’m pretty surprised at that. The Gen5x is a beast of a vacuum but it is LOUD and a little hefty. I’ve noticed that Ridgid has moved towards less power in some tools (i.e. their high torque impact) and some of their newer offerings have similar specs to the Gen5x line, like their hammer drill. I wonder what caused them to move away from the Octane line.

Actually Stuart, I just looked at the specs on the Gen5x and it is 40 CFM. I was looking at the spec for a different tool that was in the same article. Sorry!

It’s not just you; Google highlights 150 CFM in searches, pulling it out of context from a source that doesn’t clearly enough state the rating is for a different product.

I have been underwhelmed by my Gen5X vac – small dust bin and a pain to empty – so this is improvement.
The Gen5X was brushless. At the HD web site, I do not see anything about whether this model is also brushless?

States it has a 2 stage filter but doesn’t show the two filters. Looks very similar to the Ryobi 18v hand vac in filter reproduction however. I’m own a few of the Ryobi hand vacs that I purchased to replace all three of my B&D 18v Nicad hand vacs and honestly like the B&D filtration system better which pretty much consisted of a corrugated filter shielded behind a plastic pre filter with lots of smaller holes in the plastic. The Ryobi filter system IMO, with the nylon pre-filter, gets clogged too rapidly and loses suction. Then you have to pull the dust bucket off more frequently to wipe the junk off the pre filter than I ever had to do with the B&D Dustbusters. NiCads we’re getting too expensive to find and replace, aftermarket NiCad replacement 18v batteries would get less life than the OEM batteries and my 18-20v battery converter for the B&D would not work on the hand vacs which is why I switched over to Ryobi hand vacs.

I have the previous model vac which this one is replacing…
I’m not a fan. Let’s just say it sucks [ha. ha.]. Seriously, it just doesn’t have the suction you’d expect — and it’s MUCH louder than even a full sized Dyson home vacuum. I actually need to wear hearing protection with the Ridgid. And it just DOES NOT get the job done.
I hope this new one fixes that issue, but I’ll wait until the reviews are out. I won’t get burned again.

That vac looks a lot like my “Mellif” brand vac I purchased on Amazon. It uses DeWalt batteries and colors. It actually works great.
