I find it hard to believe the 1/2″ is only 225 ft lbs. I have a heavy duty one that i need for taking off lug nuts etc or mighty tight bolts. I did buy a DeWalt 3/8 medium duty one that is similar in size and rating to this Ridgid one. I have all the sizes i need in terms of sockets so i fail to see the need for a medium duty 1/2 impact.

I suspect that came about because the 1/2″ and 3/8″ are pretty much the same tools.
A smaller 1/2″ has a place though. I have the big Dewalt and it’s heavy and cumbersome in tight confines. If I’m under a car trying to hold the thing one-handed away from my body – it can be a struggle.
I realize you might counter “but just use the 3/8″ with the same specs.” I don’t have a knock-down counter argument for that. The only points I can offer is that most people will have larger sockets in the 1/2″ size and an adapter would rob a little power and add length.

There are quite a few compact and medium-duty 1/2″ impact wrenches on the market.

i agree if you were considering one then to get the second one for practically nothing would be a no brainer. I was just saying for my usage the 1/2 is not overly useful.

That’s also why I thought to add in about the 3pc combo kit.
3/8″ and 1/2″ impacts of the same performance level might seem redundant, but some users might like the combination. And for those that don’t, I think the 3pc combo is also very appealing, especially if someone needs a starter kit to get going with batteries and a charger.

I think the reason that many companies are offering 1/2″ drive compact torque wrenches that are nearly identical to their 3/8″ drive compact models is to offer people who only have 1/2″ drive impact sockets a cheaper option to get a compact impact wrench.
basically You can pick you impact wrench based on what you have for sockets. Rather than having to buy new sockets to get in on the newer compact impact wrenches.

Those subcompact impact wrenches look pretty good. Enough torque to make it useful for lots of automotive tasks. I currently end up using my giant (heavy) Dewalt for lots of stuff where it’s way overpowered – but I don’t currently have a mid-weight option.
At first I thought “well, would most people even need both the 1/2″ and 3/8″ if they have identical specs?” but the price for the pair makes it compelling.
Interestingly, when I checked the Canadian website to see if we had a similar deal, I discovered the 1/2″ subcompact has a “new lower price” of $129. A Canadian price lower than the USA? That never happens!

For context, our prices are typically 30-50% higher. This still doesn’t make the price as attractive as the two for $149 deal, but – it’s interesting.

Thanks, that’s actually a decent deal (HD and Lowe’s are at $249).
I did some HD research, and found some Makita deals, including the XWT08Z (similar to the DCF899B) with free wimpy 2.0 Ahr battery at $249, and the XWT17Z or 18Z combined with a impact driver or hammer drill for $239.
