I like that the bins are removable and aren’t just dividers. I do have a bunch of ridgid boxes and i’m not sure if i’ll add these to the mix. I just bough a bunch of the half sized organizers from milwaukee and i’m waiting the add the slim ones as well. The milwaukee rep at hope depot said they were suppose to be in store a week ago but i’m sure he was just blowing smoke. But i have seen on IG that they are in some other stores- just not mine yet.

How small of a part will the compartment secure? Will it keep a #6 washer contained in a bin?

I very highly doubt it. This is more of an organizer for say lag bolts and wire nuts than #6 washers.
For that matter, even small parts organizers will sometimes (usually?) have trouble keeping #6 washers in their own compartments.

If it’s designed like Ridgids current smaller Pro case, it has depressions in the lid that seal the individual trays pretty tightly. I haven’t had any cross contamination, down to #8 hex nuts. Don’t have any #6 washers in them so I can’t say for sure but like Stuart said, that’s a tall order. You could always put a strip of sticky backed weather stripping around the container with the uber-small parts.
I actually consolidated all of the orange trays from 2 of said Pro cases into one to make, essentially, this same case. I have had bad luck in the past with clear lid small parts organizers. The lid always seems to end up cracked or with holes in them. I’ll likely pick one up next time I’m at HD for research purposes.

Lads, as an aside one of the things I have noticed every time I open one of the Ridgid boxes is a somewhat odd smell. I assume it is the plasticisers evapourating but who kmows? I am thinking of getting one of the medium sized boxes for my wife’s car. Just to carry a spare blanket, torches, jumper cables, gloves, etc and reallydo notmwant it to stink up the blanket. Thanks.

Next time I’m at HD I’ll try to take a sniff at the various storage containers.
In my experience, some cheap plastics (especially from China) seem to be constantly outgassing, or at least a lot stinkier and longer lasting than usual. To give a couple examples, that is one major difference between Pelican cases (much better feel to my fingers, much less smell) than Pelican clones at HF or Fry’s.
Some of my HF/Central corded tools (which can be rugged and have their place) have a similar “feel” and, at least at first, were stinky, but none of my Ryobi/Bosch/Makita power tools have been like that. (But not all HF stuff – e.g. my HF storage boxes weren’t like that).

Last time I was at HD, I took a sniff of the Ridgid black boxes: there is a strong smell, but it’s not the same as the typical HF smell.
HD also had a LOT of slim Milwaukee Packout containers, so I took a feel (yup, they do feel nice) and a sniff (they do smell a bit, but much less than the black Ridgid, didn’t sniff the comparable Ridgid organizers to compare).

I recall Stuart and others talking about the Ridgid boxes outgassing, which is only exacerbated by the fact that they are somewhat sealed. I’ve had some of mine for nearly four years, and the smell is all but non-existent. My ToughSystem containers have a similar, albeit less strong smell, from what I recall.

That’s the only thing I can think of it being. These things are molded, assembled, sealed up, packaged, and shipped to retailers. It could be mold-release agents or other volatiles, but it usually goes away with some airing out.
Think of a “new car” smell, or refrigerator. You need airflow and time to clear out the residuals.

They do smell for a very long time unfortunately enough.
I have a couple sitting closed, and upon opening the factory smell is still there … guess I should leave them sitting outside empty for a a few weeks.

There is clearly a lot of money to be made in storage of not just tools but also fixings and “bits and pieces” the trend now seems to be for removable boxes that rather than movable partitions which I definitely prefer. Given the pricing of the Milwaukee system I would expect the process will accelerate. My power tools these days are almost (Milwaukee being the exception but not maybe after Friday if the red Systainers are available at the tool fair) all in L boxxes or Systainers and I have fifteen large and a dozen small boxes of the type in the picture for fixings of various types however I have noticed the prices rising even in the non branded varieties.
On the topic of odours I have a set of Marples chisels which must be at least fifteen years old and they have a strong smell, I moved them out of the wooden box they came in and it is still there, not particularly unpleasant but noticeable.

I’m always reminded of the awful smell of my old but not in any other way useless Craftsman clear handled USA made (WF?) tools. Drivers. Chisels. The odd handled tool.
I’d donate them all to Jimmy Carter/ReStore in a second if it weren’t for my being such a sentimental schmuck.

The Marples chisels in question have plastic handles so maybe the culprit is a particular kind of plastic.

Yes, and no.
Acetate screwdrivers and other acetate handled tools smell as the plastic ages and decomposes over time.
With plastic tool boxes, the smell decreases with time.

The chisels smelt from day one and the odour has remained the same neither better or worse, given that they are not in the original container and I am unaware that steel gives off any kind of scent by a process of elimination it has to be the handles. The smell while noticeable is not sufficiently obnoxious as to prevent me from using them.

Jim, you said it. And sometimes they even give off what many call the Craftsman vomit smell. It kind of reminds you of someone who has had a bad night with the who-hit-John and the residual calljng card won’t leave the bathroom. My nutdrivers and screwdrivers of 1988-ish vintage fall jnto this category. You cannot keep them inside a closed toolbox. I too thought about putting mine to the curb(the hoarders and bummers will have them before dawn) but now I wonder if I should keep them and hand them off to my grandson in a few years?

They haven’t physically changed (like a lot of my oldest black rubber(?) Klein handled drivers that have become “grey”.

Cool, glad you saw my comment. I bought two of these and they are what I’ve been waiting for from Ridgid, along with pull out shelf organizers. They are the same size bins as what are in their small organizers, except for the awesome fact they include two large bins with dividers that you can pull out to stick in long stuff. I can finally put all of my brad and finish nails into it instead of having them bounce around in my nailer cases, along with a bottle of oil. The large bins could fit a 9 ah Flexvolt battery in them. You could also take out the large bins and stick them in the small organizer and take the small bins and put them into the clear lid organizer for more small bins.
As far as the smell, it wasn’t noticeable to me like the organizers were, but it’s still there. Don’t stick your head in and sniff and you should be okay.
The only problem with it is that the side handles do not stay put, they just flop around. That design needs a little make over, along with the price. Even just $25 instead of $30 would make it more comparable to the other mid grade compartment bins. Still, way cheaper than Milwaukee, which is the same style.

I can’t find these clear top organizers in any Home Depot. I can’t order online it says in store only. I’ve checked availability in numerous Home Depot’s. I’ve spoken to representatives and was told it’s not available or discontinued. How can I get one of these? Please help
