Ridgid 18V Gen5X Cordless Combo

Right now and for an unknown amount of time, the new Ridgid 18V Gen5X cordless power tool combo kit (R9652) is on sale for $399, which is $100 less than its listed price of $499.

We only just received test samples, but the tools look pretty darned compelling on paper. The drill features a brushed motor and delivers up to 780 in-lbs of torque, and has a new chuck with built-in LED ring light.

In addition to the hammer drill, you also get an impact driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw, LED worklight, charger, (2) 4.0Ah Li-ion battery packs, and carrying bag.

$499 was decent for a brand spankin’ new cordless kit, $399 is even better. These tools aren’t available separately yet, and so if you want to climb into the Ridgid Gen5X bandwagon right away, this is the only option.

Buy Now(via Home Depot)

Shipping is free, and you can also opt for in-store pickup. We’re not sure when this deal expires. It could be tomorrow, it could be after Father’s Day, it could be never.

Are you a Ridgid Gen5X early adopter? What’s your take on the new generation of cordless tools?

That’s pretty hard to beat, and if I hadn’t just dumped a crapload of $$$$ on 12v Fuel stuff last month I would probably grab this kit. The 18v weight is just a bugger to hump around all day.

On our last trip to S.C., I came across a store that sells refurbished power tools for like 60% off.
Ridgid outnumbered other brands by about 3 to 1.
I kind of lost interest in Ridgid after that, Although I do have a corded router from them that works wonderfully…

Might have been a Direct Tools location? I’ve been to their outlet near Pigeon Forge, TN. They sell lots of refurb Ridgid and Ryobi gear. You can occasionally find some decent stuff on clearance there. Last time I was in the area, I picked up several tool bags for pretty cheap.

Sounds like DTFO to me, too. Quite frankly, I’m done with that store. The staff there, at least at the two locations in my state as well as the one I visited in Arizona, is quite clueless when it comes to tools and the pricing is ridiculous.

For example, they sent out an email this week boasting CPO Ridgid X4 kits for $189.99. Well, the same kit (drill / impact driver / radio ) brand new WITH the LSA is only $179 at Home Depot. As for certified refurbished, I think they’re full of it. It looks like they were just returned and taken directly to DTFO. Beat up, dirty, scratched, cracked … I even found the palm router I picked up there a few months back had a rusted nut.

Try and return it? Good luck. You get store credit.

I watched a review of the impact driver and it looked to be very solid and powerful. I’ll put a link to the review I watched. He has reviews on all 5 of the tools in the combo kit. If they all perform like the impact, it should be a very nice kit for the money.

I picked this set up from Home Depot today and was able to use a harbor freight 20% coupon so final price was $320. I had recently purchased a Dewalt Dcd995m2 kit so I returned it and this kit was only $20 more. Well worth it to me and to be honest I was kind of underwhelmed with the Dewalt. Everything feels very well made and there are a lot of really cool features like the lighted chuck of the drill. That lifetime warranty on everything is pretty sweet to.

I can’t comment on the 5th gen stuff. But a few days ago I tried to drill a few holes using their 4th gen drill and it would not drill at all. Like literally, at all at all. I switched over to my ryobi using the same drill bits and they drilled right threw. I was disappointed in ridged….

You need to set the drill on high torque. It has two settings. Ryobi drills are not as powerful as Ridgid. I use both.

I think the LED chuck is a great idea, I just worry about the feasability of replacing it since chucks do go bad, eventually…and some are even bad out of the box.

If I hadnt already invested a lot of $$$ into Fuel stuff (during the 50/100/150 off promo), I would be jumping on this Ridgid set.

Also curious if anyone knows….what is the REAL difference between the motors used in 5X (“permanent magnet”) vs actual brushless? The internets make it seem like they are pretty close to the same thing.

Well, Ridgid tools are lifetime warranty, even the batteries when purchased as part of the kit. Last time I broke my impact driver (gen 4) it was in the shop for less than two days. I’ll let them worry about the chuck. 🙂

I don’t understand how Ridgid always comes out with right side circular saw when almost every other brand has theirs on the left. That and not being brushless (though really no a huge thing for home users) I can honestly say its not very impressive. Their warranty also it NOT lifetime. It is a lifetime service guarantee which means as I found out they will service them and repair them up to the point where they have parts for your tools and batteries. Now given the track record of tool companies they release a new tool line up about 3-4 years. So I figure you can count on maybe 5 maybe 6 years of parts once they phase out a lineup for a new. Not that this is a bad warranty it certainly is not but just clearing up the “lifetime guarantee” phrase.
On a different note this is a great deal for a home owner for sure but in my experience with the Ridgid tools they are built meh so so. I have had the 4x since they came out and they have been sent in multiple times for nothing more than just a drop form 6-8 feet. The batteries well there is the issue for me. I decided I was done with Ridgid when the batteries I got with the Radio combo, back in 2013, had to be sent in and were declared dead after 3 months of minimal use. Got them back all was good for another 5 months (hey improvement) and declared dead again. SO figured third time is a charm, I was wrong. No more than 2 weeks the first one went and 6-7 weeks the second one died. So with that I am good and done with Ridgid that combo set servers only to power my radio as any other use kills the batteries in months. So, so long Ridgid hello M18 FUEL with a right side circular saw!!!

You are correct about the lifetime warrantee. I am a professional tradesman and my Ridgid tools do yeoman’s work. The batteries are on par with anyone else’s. Improper discharge recharge Is no longer a big problem ass the Ridgid batteries will not completely discharge. Ridgid is the best bang for the buck cordless tools on the market.

I’m a DIY’er and have Just purchased top of the line DeWalt tools like new condition off Amazon such as the DCD995M2 (for less than $190) hammer drill kit with two batteries and charger, a DCS391B Circular saw for less than $120, and a DCS331B Jig saw for around $120, all 20V Max.

I bought DeWALT because I received a handle down DeWALT back in 2003 and both the drill and battery are still working for me however I need additional tools now and that’s why I went with the 20V to try and future proof some things.

Then I came across this wonderful site and seen this deal which aside from the jigsaw gives me everything for less.

Since some of these posts are near me (I’m in NorthEast TN) figured I’d see what people suggest.

I’ve seen some YouTube video reviews claim the Rigid provides more torque and longer battery life or at least comparable life to the brushless brands and models they reviewed though they didn’t explicitly mention names. One guy did something around 234 cuts on a 2×4 on a single charge with circular saw.

I’m not a fan of the blade position on the circular saw but I’ve never really used one yet but that’s going to change soon so not sure if that makes a huge difference.

If I get the Ridgid then I’m probably taking a loss on the DeWALT returning unused used items to Amazon will likely incur a restocking fee.

As it stands I’ve invested around $430 on DeWALT and don’t have an impact driver or a reciprocating saw (never had either before) or I could return each with a possible 20% hit per item and purchase this Ridgid kit and get an x4 jigsaw (batteries would work with that I believe) for $120 and end up with more tools and potentially better warranty.

My problem is opinions are drastically spread across the board and seems like the 5x isn’t even in the same league as 4x due to new magnetic brush motors per the YouTube video reviews.

Any suggestions? I’m really needing tools with safety features as I’m new to a lot of this and durability and longevity. I’m use to things lasting years and I’m currently unemployed so $ does matter.

I had first gen Makita LXT lith ion kit. Batteries went bad after warranty was up. Tools though were pretty good. Then I got the X4 purely b/c from what I see the limitations of contractor combo kits are the batteries. All the major contractor grade tool brands whether brush/brushless are marginally better/worse than the next. The difference are batteries. Thats also the biggest cost. No batteries last forever. But LSA does …..period or until Ridgid goes belly up. I have not had issues yet with Ridgids tools and had to saw out 1 battery out of four since x4 came out. I think the only other brand I would ever consider is Milwaukee.

        Thanks Rchalk!

I ended up getting This Gen 5X kit and keeping my DeWALT. I opened a Home Depot account and financed this and tried using Harbor Freight but got denied but since I just got a HDepot card I talked the manager into 10% additional off so my final tally was around 370 with tax.

The Home Depot manager said none of the regional stores would honor anything that was 20% off from a competitor. He sounded convincing and wasn’t in a hurry to say no and leave as he actually talked to me about other stuff as well.

Keeping DeWALT as they have a much bigger tool line and despite specs on paper their stuff usually works well and with Ridgid I’ve got hopefully quality stuff that can be used for years without worrying about dead batteries.

I have both the X4 and the GEN5 tool sets.. While the X4 was a great set of tools, the GEN5 set comes with the 4AH battery and since it’s part of a kit registers with Ridgid for the LSA which includes the batteries since they are part of the set. If purchased separately (not part of the kit), they only get a 3 year warrenty. Used the new set to build a new set of steps for the back door the other day. Worked well, All tools include some type of improvements. Interested to see what else gets added to the GEN5 series.. Power and performance has improved in all the tools thus far. Even tested the LED light and got over 40 hours of continues use and still has 1 bar on it when I chose to end the test since I would be asleep and at work the next day when it ran dead sometime.

Other online tests showed like 46 hour of use from one 4Ah battery. Showed that to my son and was like so what, why not recharge it when it needs it.. Explained that sometimes you can have a power failure from a major storm where you need the long life from the battery. No power for 3 days, etc
While its Not likely a contractor is going to use it that long without recharging it.. But always nice to know you have that kind of useful life to me.. Larger 7 1/4 inch saw size gives many more choices in blades as well.

Just picked up the Gen5x combo kit for $399. $100 dollar price break. Have been wanting the circular saw for some time now. The Gen5x saw is a improved unit compared to the x4. Although I prefer 6 1/2″ saws, I like the upgrade on the whole. 3 speed impact will really be nice when installing door hardware. I now have 4- 4ah and 2 – 1.5 ah batteries to work with. Buying batteries in the kits is the best economical route to take. I am looking forward to more Gen5x tools coming out. I really want a SDS cordless. I want a couple cordless grinders with the improved Gen5x motors.

I had a look at the GenX5 impact driver, and was really disappointed to see a brushed motor. There has been a huge improvement in brushless motors in the hobby applications, to the point that you just aren’t competitive running a brushed motor. All the drones, high speed boats, helicopters, airplanes, jets, use brushless, just like the new Milwaukee tools. You can buy a model 4×4 guaranteed to do 100 mph right out of the box, no mods. That’s a lot of amps through the motor!

When you’re working it hard, a brushed motor wastes battery power heating up the brushes and commutator, instead of producing power.

So Rigid replaced the el cheapo field magnets with some rare earth ones; that’s a patch job until they introduce their own brushless line.

Bad news: The deal ended a while ago, I’m not sure when.

Good news: The Ridgid Gen5X combo is eligible for a different deal, ending 1/31/2016:

      https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/home-depot-cordless-combo-kit-deal-h2015/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

Add this kit to your cart, and an add-on item to save $150. The cheapest add-on right now is $60, and there are a bunch of $69 Ridgid 18V items as well.

If you buy the eligible fan at $60, the total would be $559 – $150 = $409.

Or there’s a sander at $70, an air blower and $69, a compact battery at $69, and double battery packs for $79.
