Small 6-gallon air compressors don’t usually catch my attention anymore, but this one did. Ryobi’s latest model (YG601PV1) features a space-saving vertical pancake air tank and compact compressor configuration.
Apparently, there’s an identical Ridgid version as well (OF60150VP). Both seem to have the same features and specs, but the Ridgid is currently listed as a “special buy” and is available for a bit less.

This makes sense, as Ridgid and Ryobi’s North American power tool endeavors are both operated by TTI.

In addition to its smaller footprint, the vertical pancake configuration provides an “improved” center of gravity for easy portability. That’s a fancy way of saying that it’s more comfortable to carry.
According to a Ridgid promo video, embedded below, that compressor will “only be available for a limited time.” Maybe the Ryobi version is a permanent edition while the Ridgid is priced low for the holidays?

There are a couple of other features that stand out to make these air compressors even more interesting, such as hooks for hanging your air nailers, and hose-routing channels on the underside of the compressor that help to prevent tip-overs. Apparently there’s also replaceable air filter.

First Thoughts
The price difference is a bit strange, as both compressors look to be identical, as far as on-paper features and specs are concerned.
I’m really digging the design. As someone who often has to lug bulky and unbalanced tools around, I like that these vertical pancake compressors were designed to be easy to carry. The smaller footprint is an added bonus, and the interesting features are frosting on the cake.
If I were in the market for a new compact air compressor, I would strongly look at these models. My first choice would be the Ridgid, given its better pricing, but if it truly is a “limited time” product, then I would consider the Ryobi.
My only gripe with be that neither Ridgid nor Ryobi really came up with a better way to describe these as vertical pancake compressors. It seems like this was a missed opportunity for really funky branding, as with Ryobi’s Airstrike nailers and Ridgid’s JobMax modular tools.

At my Home Depot the Ryobi one comes with 3 nail guns similar to the Bostitch kit, I believe it’s $200 for it.
I just purchased the Bostitch compressor 3-nail gun kit for $200 and then I saw these. Had I known they were coming out before I might have pulled the trigger on the Ryobi or waited until the Ryobi goes on sale for $160 and bought it then.

The Ryobi combo package on sale at home depot for a limited time, 150 dollars. The brad nailers appear to be good quality. I have yet to fire this unit up.

It looks like these would take up less space than my Bostitch 6 gallon compressor. Now, as with all oilless compressors, we will have to wait and see about the longevity of these compressors.

Yep, the compressor is great in looks, design and operation. As far as durability it is a piece of junk. This thing had a life of luxury doing kitchen remodels and interior trim. Crapped out just after warranty. Cost to fix more than buying a new one. Not a new one of these, discontinued, wonder why?

This one. The smaller form factor and closer-to-body carrying are huge pluses to me. The Kobalt looks well reviewed, but it’s nothing special.

I was in Home Depot a week or so back, and I saw one of the Ridgid compressors. It caught my eye and I had one of those “why didn’t I think of that” moments. It’s a far less cumbersome layout than the horizontal configuration when carrying and a bit more compact than the hotdog tank versions. I don’t need any more compressors, but if I did, I’d consider one of these for a portable.

The Ridgid version is on sale in the stores for $129.
The noise level is listed as 80 dB which isn’t bad for an oilless compressor. I’m wondering if the tank could be used to deflect some of the sound away from the user.

Just stopped in at my area Home Depot in Kingsport,Tn they had 2 of the Ridgid pancake compressors in stock says they just get them as corporate sends them. Had them priced down again from $169 down to $126. to good of a deal to pass up so I picked one up

I have had numerous guys comment on how quiet my Senco is, and it isn’t even an exceptionally quiet portable compressor. They are just used to the usual Porter-Cable, Bostitch, Husky, and DeWalt pancake compressors. I’ve never seen one that wasn’t painfully loud. I saw these new ones at Home Depot the other day and couldn’t think of a reason I would want to buy them, even if I didn’t already have a Senco compressor and Max & Hitachi guns.

My porter cable just crapped out this summer after only 3 yrs use. This looked good last nite while at HD so I bought it. Wife said Merry Christmas. I’ll use it soon so I’ll give a review when I do. Understand ear protection will be required; to be expected w/ cheaper price.

$46? I saw one just two weeks ago at a Home Depot nearby (one I don’t usually go to) and I can’t remember the price exactly, but I believe it was about $150. If it were less than $100 I would have remembered.
I bought the Ryobi version with 3 guns around Christmas 2014 for $150. It was such a bargain.
Although I haven’t used it much, I have zero complaints. Great price to get into nailers. I shopped forever for an air compressor and had decided on one of those big bulky 8-10 gallon ones with wheel. I’m glad I didn’t pull the trigger before this came out. I wanted the 3 guns, but I didn’t want the crappy Bostich or Porter Cable pancake combos, which typically run for $250, I think.
If the Ryobi deal comes around again at $150, BUY it.

I was in Sears the other day and I saw a very small oil-free compressor. It was listed for $179, but I’m sure it can be had for less.

It wouldn’t be good for tools that need a lot of air or if you were building a house, but for small jobs and occasional use this looks to be even more compact and portable than either the Ryobi or RIDGID. Does anyone have any experience with it? I liked the fact that it has ball valves for the tire inflator shutoff and the tank drain.

I can’t turn the valve up any higher on my compressor, but it won’t get past about 85 95 psi tank pressure. Does Sabine have any thoughts?
