Ryobi is about to launch a new battery-powered cordless butt warmer!
Officially called a Heated Cushion Kit, the new tush heater (model FVT51K) will be part of their USB lithium line of cordless tools and accessories.
The Ryobi heated seat warmer features 3 temperature settings and up to 5 hours or charge on 2x 2Ah batteries set to low.

It measures 3″ thick, for padded comfort in different environments, from jobsites to bleacher seats.
Ryobi says that the cordless heated cushion can reach a temperature of up to 150°.
The included power pack works with 2x Ryobi Lithium USB batteries and has a built-in fuel gauge. It looks like there’s also a hole for a lanyard strap.
Here are expected runtimes for the 3 temperature settings when the cushion is powered by 2x 2Ah batteries:
- High (150°) – 2 hours
- Medium (130°) – 3.5 hours
- Low (110°) – 5 hours
The power adapter has a USB-C output and doubles as a mobile device charger.
The kit comes with the heated cushion, power pack, 2x 2Ah batteries, and a charging cable.

It’s not exactly unprecedented. Makita was first to tackle this type of product, with their heated blanket.
Ryobi’s new heated cushion makes sense. I wonder if it’s suitable for use in other environments, outside of broad jobsites, tailgating, and stadiums, such as outdoors for camping, fishing, or hunting.
Will its 2-5 hrs runtime be a downside?
This looks to be Ryobi’s first dual battery USB Lithium product, and one big question comes to mind – what else might the new mobile-charging-capable power pack be used for?

The runtime doesn’t seem to be an issue for the things I would think you’d use this for – outdoor lunch break in a colder environment or a winter football game. Products like this are a good way to give consumers value in that they either get you onto a platform or provide alternative uses for already owned batteries. I’ll probably buy a ryobi cordless vac and wet vac when our current ones go.

The Makita blanket is “cool”, but too small. At 27”x55”, it might be good for some uses, but I’d love a larger heating blanket for sleeping when camping or when we lose power.
I’m curious to read comments about different uses for the Ryobi cushion. I’ve been so comfortable with my heated vest, I don’t see a need for it. But I think Ryobi will sell a lot of them. It will be a hot seller come Christmas.

I assume Ryobi did user tests, but the output temperatures (other than the low set) seem uncomfortably high. Maybe 130 and 150 are what’s needed to offset cold steel seating in Green Bay during playoff time.

Agreed, 49°C or 120°F is what NASA considers the limit of tolerable touch temperatures for momentary skin contact. For continuous contact it’s a little lower at 45°C or 113°F.
But that’s for bare skin. I’m betting the temperature measurement is at the heating element internal to the cushion. So you’ll have a layer of cushion along with pants that the user needs to feel the heat through.

You’re probably correct in your analysis. While the differential temperature may drive the heat transfer the heat capacity and heat conduction properties of the intermediary layers between the heat source and your skin will have a great impact on your senses. You might be able to pull a wooden spoon barehanded out of a warming oven set at 250 degrees F – but try that with a metal spoon left in for the same amount of time.

You’ll also lose heat to the elements as well as the bench the cushion sits on. I’d pay for a full size cushion for the vehicle if it doesn’t have heated seats but a button warmer for $89? I think the makita blanket would be better as well in cold conditions while in chicago,though sadly they’re going domed.

When I first got my heated vest, I called Milwaukee to see if they would make a heated sleeping bag – thought it would make a thinner, lighter rectangular bag for camping in winter. Their response was no. I still want one.

This could be a low cost alternative to having a seat heater installed in the truck. May have to look into it for the other half once it’s released.

You can buy heated seat covers that plug into the 12 outlet of your car. They’ll be far superior to this in places where you have access to 12v power.

+1 for this. We were trying to avoid a new car and added a seat warmer, remote start, and some winter tires and saved a lot of money.
Those seat covers are really inexpensive too

I bought a heated seat for my work van off Amazon. Plugs in the 12v and has 2 heat settings. Best 12 quid I ever spent.

I’ve been though enough freezing cold bleachers at late fall football games to realize this ain’t so crazy an idea.
I thought heated jackets were silly when they launched but it brought people into the battery platform. This and the tiny speaker could help do that (it has me thinking about it)

Initially I checked to see if it was April 1st. Then I realized that this product really does have some appeal.
The price seems a little high, and I personally don’t need the product, but I know a LOT of people for whom this product would be great…
As others have mentioned, this seems like a great product for those attending fall & winter outdoor sports games, especially if it’s pretty soft & cushiony when the heat is off. It might also be useful around the shop & house, for when the rolling stool in the garage is ice cold, or as an ersatz heating pad for sore back muscles.

The pouch for the battery pack should have been more integrated into the cushion than sticking out like that.
I wonder if the interface with the heater is also via the USB. Which would be interesting for a higher power draw device like heater. Also wonder if there is some sort of voltage processing is involved to get the USB voltage or it come straight from the batteries.

I was also wondering about the connection from the power pack to the cushion. E.g. can I get a Ryobi 18v adapter, or even another brand, to power the cushion instead?
Like with heated jackets. Don’t they all pretty much share the barrel connector?
I’d like it if that were true for this cushion. If it’s USB-C, then you could plug it into your car or use it with Dewalt’s DCB094K “USB Charger / Power Source Kit”, instead of relying on 2x 2ah 3.7v cells.

Why not make this 18v not usb. The runtime and power would be worlds better and the side pouch would be bigger but 2 to 4 hours!?! We all know these companies say x hours battery life but it’s a solid 20% less. I would rather not stress a bigger battery rather than draining small batteries fast.

I agree, the only reason I can think of is the added weight and bulk of an 18v battery. But I don’t have anything else that uses those lithium batteries, so I’m unlikely to buy this.

They should come with 2x 3AH instead of 2AH. They probably did this to keep the prince under 100 bucks but cmon 2AH for a heated product is not enough. I have the USB fan with a 2ah and the runtime is bad at high speed..

The difference in cost between the batteries at wholesale prices for Ryobi is probably less than 50 cents. The decision to include the smaller batteries is more about encouraging you to buy the bigger batteries at the huge markup they sell them for.

Sell it as bare tool 18v and keep it under 100 dollars. It would become the gateway drug to ryobi platform for the soccer moms. Its why the usb platform has something interesting tools but im not willing to accept the compromise in runtime.

3.7v lithium ion batteries are cheap and easy to replace. So you could buy 10 of them and have 10 hours at high temp.

i’ve already got a usb heated pad like this. my main use is fall camping trips. i like sitting out by the fire, but camping chairs are designed for hot environments and to be well ventilated. not so great when the temps start dipping into the 40’s.
the pad works great on the colder nights, and i can use the usb pack to top off my aging phone as well.

Maybe if i get my hands on one ill use an adapter to convert it over to a high draw large power bank. You can do that with the headed m12 gear so why not give it the runtime it deserves.

It seems silly to some but I think it’s genius. Some of my kids soccer games start at 8am on those late October Saturdays…had a few games in the 40s, so this could be useful to some or many.

Great value at the $69.98 price point. Wonder why they lowered it from the launch announcement. Two batteries, a power back, heated cushion for $70 is great.
