Yesterday, I posted about new Ridgid and Ryobi vertical pancake air compressors that I think look pretty decent. The “vertical pancake” design gives the compressors a small footprint, and it also improves carryability. For how much they cost, hopefully they perform decently as well.
Right now, the Ridgid compressor is available for a limited time and is priced at $169. The Ryobi compressor is priced at $199.

In the comments, Derek and Jason pointed out something surprising – the Ryobi compressor is also offered as part of a nailer set, for the same $199 price.
The special Ryobi bundles comes with the vertical pancake compressor, a 16 gauge finish nailer, an 18 gauge brad nailer, an 18 gauge narrow crown stapler, starter fasteners, and an air hose.
This gives you two buying options – the Ridgid air compressor by itself, for $169, or this nailer combo kit, for $199. This makes a lot more sense than seeing the compressor by itself priced at $199.

I need to replace my current portable tank-only (expired a few years ago, while probably not a safety issue, with small kids around Id rather be safe than sorry)
These vertical pancake compressors could be an excellent alternative to lugging around a tank that never seems to have enough air when I need it. Plus I can use it for trim work when not near an air source.
While I really wanted to try one of the Ryobi cordless trim nailers, a portable compressor like this will have many more uses and is cheaper (I would be buying the Ridgid version since I already have plenty of nailers to go around)

Thanks for the shout out and answering my question last week.

Here is some more info on it from Ryobi’s youtube channel.

So, the compressor is the same… but I’m having trouble deciding between the Ryobi with the nailers versus the Ridgid. Are the three nailers worth $73, or would I be better getting the Ridgid and picking up better quality air tools as I need them?
Stuart
Personally, I’d go the later route and buy the standalone Ridgid compressor, unless I knew that the combo kit had most of what I was looking for in nailers.
Chris
No idea what just happened but early this AM the Ridgid compressor was still 126 and in stock at my store.
Now its 169 and not available for pickup.
Dang you Home Depot.

I have no air compressor I wonder if this would be a good starter kit for me? Or should I get something of higher quality? Any thoughts?
Stuart
My first compressor was a small $100-$130 Black & Decker model that came with a brad nailer. Never used the nailer before coming across a Ridgid one. At the time I also considered a small Craftsman model that still always goes on sale.
If the compressor specs for your needs, I’d say try to get either the Ridgid version on sale, or consider the Ryobi kit if you think you’ll be able to use at least two of the three included nails in upcoming projects.

One review up so far, and the nailers seem to miss the mark… http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-6-gal-Vertical-Pancake-Compressor-with-3-Nailers-Combo-Kit-YG63CK/205377898#customer_reviews
I’m still waiting for the Ridgid to drop to $130.
Matt
This combo is now $150.
