Acme also has 20% off on a Freud 16 pcs. forstner bit set.

Anyone have insight as to the quality of Freud vs Fisch in this area and which is the better buy?
MoogleMan3
Both are very good sets; I’d go for the freud set. Cheaper and they’ve been very good performers in my shop.

For somewhat less you might look at the Diablo set:

For a lot more – we always thought that the Famag Bormax Forstner bits were about the best we ever used – but that was many moons ago – and the price difference now is stunning:

@fred & MoogleMan
Thanks for the input.
Is there a difference between the Freud and Diablo branding? They are both made by Freud, correct?
Michael M.
They are both made by Freud in Austria, and on the bits they don’t even bother to put the Diablo branding. The Diablo branding is just on the packaging. I guess it doesn’t make sense to have two seperate production runs for the same bits with different markings.
Fisch bits are also made in Austria.
MoogleMan3
Yep, both made by freud. Freud is supposed to be a bit higher quality than diablo, but having used both forstners in a few sizes, I couldn’t tell a difference.
fred
At one time Freud had several lines of tools like saw blades. Their Avanti (or Avanti-Pro) brand was supposedly their bargain (perhaps no-frills) offering. Then came Freud-Diablo (a step up ?) Then they sold product under the Freud name and finally ones that they branded Freud Industrial. I’m not sure how significant the differences are between the Diablo Forsner bits versus those branded Freud.

Just to throw in another possibility, Bora’s Tempest line of Forstner bits seems reasonably priced, and it seems Bora is going to be included in a Scary Good Deal soon.

Anyone know how the Hickory brand of Forster bits compares to Fisch, Fraud, Diablo and the other brands mentioned in this thread? I found a box of imperial Hickories up to 3 inch under dust at a pawn shop, and got them for I think $30.

Ha! Gearwrench makes what looks like a Knipex Cobra-style adjustable pliers. Acme calls them “Push Button Tongue and Groove,” but they clearly aren’t tongue-and-groove. 8 in., 21 positions, $24. If they work half as well as the Cobras, they’re a bargain.

I’d sooner get Irwin Groove Lock pliers – https://www.amazon.com/IRWIN-Groovelock-2-Piece-Vise-Grip-1763390/dp/B0CDNLLWCL/?tag=toolguyd-20
$23 for two sizes.
or a Knipex Cobra at the higher price point.
Koko The Talking Ape
I like my Cobras too, but the Irwins are about $12 each and the Knipexes are maybe $50 each and up. These Gearwrenches are almost exactly halfway between those two price points, and offer at least some of the advantages that the Cobras have. I thought somebody other than myself might be interested. 🙂

@stuart I’m looking to put together a cheaper power tool set for a friend. A handy homeowner. How does Craftsman compare to Ryobi? Any other decent tool platforms at that price point I should look at?
