Snap-on 105th Anniversary Special Edition Roller Cabinet Tool Box in Blue Flake

Snap-on has been promoting their new 105th anniversary special edition roller cabinet tool box on social media.

The new tool box, model KETP682ATWJB, is advertising as having a sapphire blue color with cosmic clear top coat.

In the product images in Snap-on’s social media posts, the tool box appears to have a very sparkly blue color, similar in appearance to a metal flake automotive finish.

They haven’t disclosed pricing, but other EPIQ 68″ KETP682 series roller cabinets – excluding the top hutch – are priced at over $16,000 on Snap-on’s website.

Playing devil’s advocate, if companies like Snap-on are releasing special editions of products that cost 5 figures, maybe it’s not all that bad that more hand tool manufacturers are getting into the limited edition product craze.

Snap-on says to check with your local dealer to see the new box in person.

Snap-On has been doing special editions for decades; I remember seeing their “75th anniversary” model tool box, and tools, in their print catalogs many years ago. They have countless special models associated with things going on in the racing/automotive world. In the past they’ve had special models associated with things like the 50th anniversary of the Corvette or Mustang, 100th anniversary of Harley-Davidson, countless ones associated with race car drivers, etc.

In my experience they are often less expensive than the standard boxes. I once owned a pair with “Southern Thunder” Nascar-themed graphics. I am not a Nascar fan, I simply got a killer deal on them. I ended up selling them and switching to a smaller box because I didn’t really need that much space at the time. I regret that now. I didn’t need the space then but now I sure could use it, and the idea of buying snap-on boxes at full list price is just nuts.

Yeah $16k without the top hutch, tall about insane pricing. Then again it’s snap on. Id expect this with the top hutch and automotive flake paint to cost even more. Which is insane that anyone would spend that much when a milwaukee, dewalt or 100 other brands have a similar model for less than $2k I’d imagine. Maybe im just behind the times and everyone’s charging exorbitant fees for tool storage.

Just guessing – but your tool truck guy might give it to you for easy payments of $359.99 per month for 6 years

Is it insane pricing? I feel like people say things like that because they INSTANTLY compare it to “the market”, but end up comparing apples and oranges on various technical aspects of boxes that really do make a difference. Are Snap’s prices insane compared to Matco or Cornwell or MAC et al? Or is it because you’re comparing it to Husky, Milwaukee, USG, ICON et al?

I think snap-on have missed a trick, they should of made a 105” epic box for this anniversary with a limited amount of numbers, I’ve been buying snap-on tools since the early 80s I would not like to add up how much I have spent over the years, I have recently bought new brushless guns 1/2” and 3/8” also brushless rachet 3/8 long neck, I love the brand always have.

I’m retired now but back in the eighties I purchased a couple Snap On boxes. At that time they were the best quality available. But sometime in the nineties Snap On box quality fell while Matco quality really came up. By the early 2000s I was needing more storage space and my 1989 Snap On boxes were showing wear so I went with Matco and have been very pleased.

Snap On (and most other companies) will gladly celebrate whatever gets a buyer to spend more money on their product.

Google how many companies have been around 100 years let alone 105 i think you would be surprised the number is less than 1 percent

I don’t understand the power symbol inside of the 5, does it control electrical power distribution within the box or just there for looks?

Think it’s just there to show the history from manual hand tools like the ratchet head in the “0” to their current power tools. That logo is on the power drawer though but they use that logo on all kinds of non power merch too.

I’d hate to see what a snap on impact wrench would cost. Probably cost more than a Mafell tracksaw.

For all things Snap-on, Facebook marketplace or similar…… I’m not quite sure why anyone buys new but plenty of barely used items around to demonstrate its still happening….

    Amazing products, amazing prices.

really easy why anyone buys new. it’s a chicken/egg situation. shops hire mechanics, and demand ALL mechanics have ALL the tools. it doesn’t matter the field, no one can have all the tools, and even more-so starting out in any field. and because of pesky things like food, water, shelter, and clothing, new hires don’t have enough money to buy all the tools to be fully equipped for their job.

snapon drives by, and offers to give them tools to use now for reasonable weekly payments. no other tool store offers door-to-door service, or allows you to easily make installment payments like that while working and keeping yourself alive.

I hear you. I understand their formula, and certainly those pesky items like feeding the kids, but are the weekly payments actually « reasonable » ?

I feel like a new tech/mech can get a lot farther with second hand, especially when it comes to these high ticket items like the tool chest…

We have a snap-on chest in our shop that we paid $4k CAD for (retail $12k CAD) – 2x Harbor Freight is worth it for the quality for us, but not 6x.

Harbor freights icon line is awsome. Our snap on guy was caught looking at it in awe. 6500 for hutch, 73 inch long box, 2 cabinets, over hutch box.! If i didn’t get my box so cheap from a family member (200 bucks for my classic 96) I’d have e gone that route.

Some of it is environmental. If all one sees is steak day in and day out, eating noodles and rice seems weird, despite the cost advantages.

I have and use the 52″ husky tool box at work every day. It’s possibly the best space-per-dollar toolbox from any brand ever. The one that home depot sells for $700-1,000 depending on the season.

I’m outgrowing it to the point I had to get a 32″ cart. Not a big deal. I needed the service cart anyways. Now the big box gets the less common but needed tools, service cart has all my daily used stuff.

Now I’ve hit the point of box capacity again. But I have 95% of the tools I can use to complete any job I’m up against. But, and the next issue, there’s dozens of specialty tools that are still available I don’t have space for, that promise to do those same tasks even more efficiently.

Environmentally, when I see other guys in the shop using those specialty tools and doing the same job faster, it hurts. It hurts me from an efficiency aspect, but it also hurts me financially because taking that extra time with the non-specialty tool means less time I can work on another work order to be making more money. My tools work, but money is made on speed.

Unfortunately, there are no cheap storage expansions from what I have. 52″ is where most start breaking out into the ‘big boy boxes’

The Menards tool box I would build out prices out at $5,000-payable via their credit card at 0% for one year($417/mo payments).

Home depot doesn’t offer many boxes above 72″ that have the same storage capabilities, but easily range in the same price point.

Harbor freights lockers are more expensive, I’m closing in on $15k there. I have a their card, so I can do the 0% for 3 years(still $417/mo).

Montezuma boxes are in the $10,000 range, and extreme tools would be around $15,000. But I’d end up throwing it on a credit card, or selling my liver.

So staring down the barrel of cost estimates of $5k-$15k, I got some snap-on quotes. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

And it’s really hard not to be enticed. They were willing to sell me a 74″ box($12k), with a “free” 42″ shop cart, for $150/mo. Sure, it’s for 84 months, and sure, the financing costs are baked in. And sure, that’s only the core box– I’d need another $3k in Menards box parts like lockers to finish it out to my spec.

But the reality is that despite all the bad press, the price wasn’t all that different from other non-tool-truck brands.

But staring down less than $200/mo for a longer term instead of $400+/mo, is huge, considering I still have an interest in staying alive and haven’t resorted to stealing groceries. Yet.

And there’s resale as well. Snap-on has market value and a much lower depreciation. Even if I didn’t keep the box for the entire 7 year financing, it’s still mostly worth what I paid on the second hand market. Now look at a Menards box. Even if I get it on super sale and it only costs $4k, I’d probably be lucky to get $1k-2k for the box in 2 years.

Honestly after factoring all that in, I was ready to pull the trigger on the snap-on box setup. Despite all the knowledge of the markup and baked in interest, and zero desire to be part of the clique of the brand.

What stopped me was the tariffs were announced as I was deciding this. Now I’m in a holding pattern because I scared to invest in anything, tools or tool storage. I’ve fully moved to maintenance mode of keeping what I have because I have significant doubts of the economic path we’re on.

But after doing all that price work, I’m far less opposed to a tool truck box than I used to be.

      You spec’d out a $15K icon setup??

What was your interest rate and amount financed with snap-on?

      What model snap-on?

So maybe your best bet is a 1-2 year old Menards or Icon tool chest?
