Well, things have changed, and the SpeedHex FlipOut just hit the market for a cool $50. Once the holidays roll around, it might drop in price even further.

It looks like the FlipOut power screwdriver is a Lowes exclusive. The FlipOut driver is currently available at Lowes online and is listed as in-stock at stores.

The SpeedHex FlipOut cordless driver is powered by a built-in 8V Max Li-ion battery. Like the prototype, it features a compound multi-jointed pivoting head to help it reach fasteners in tight and hard-to-reach spaces.
Plus, the head also rotates a full 360°, so you can use the tool at any angle.
The FlipOut driver has a large trigger switch that looks easy to access from the front or back of the tool. Not that there looks to really be a “front” or a “back,” as the pivoting head can be angled both ways.

Torque specs are modest – 50 to 65 in-lbs, which is reasonable for a household cordless screwdriver. The speed is said to be 170 RPM “minimum.”
There’s also a built-in LED light that pivots with the head.
The battery is charged via a wall-pluggable AC charger, and a full charge takes just 45 minutes.
There are two versions – one with a 19-piece bit set, and another that also includes a 20-piece bonus bit set.
The standard 19-piece bit set includes the following screwdriver bit sizes and styles: 2-in aluminum magnetic bit holder, (18) 1-in insert bits: Phillips P1, (2) P2, P3, slotted 5/32-in, 7/32-in, (2) 1/4-in, star T10, T20, T25, T30, hex 5/32-in, 3/16-in, 7/32-in, 1/4-in, square S1, S3.
It also comes with a convenient 1680-denier ballistic nylon case that you can toss into a toolbox, or onto your belt.
The bonus bundle set includes an additional 20 screwdriver bits: (4) 1-in nut setters: 3/16-in, 1/4-in, 5/16-in, 3/8-in, (16) 1-in insert bits: Phillips: P000, P00, P0, slotted 1/16-in, 3/32-in, 5/64-in, 1/8-in, star T5, T6, T7, T8, hex 1/16-in, 5/64-in, 3/32-in, 7/64-in, 1/8-in.
It looks like the bonus bit mainly offers a lot of precision screwdriver bit styles, which are handy for electronics work and other areas where you might run into mini screws.
In the past, Lowes released two versions of flagship Kobalt holiday tools – one version that was sold in stores, and another that was sold online and bundled with a free bonus of some kind. It looks like they’re doing the same with the FlipOut driver sets.
Right now, both sets are priced at $50. I would expect for the price to drop a little as the holiday season inches closer.

When the FlipOut design was on Kickstarter and they were seeking funding, I really couldn’t see it being a “game-changer,” at least not with a $130 fundraising price and $200 expected retail price. Wow. it looks well designed and implemented. Comes with a holster and bits with a holder on the holster. I’m very impressed with these features. You can tell that someone who actually works designed it. I’m very interested and might have to try one out if I see it on display at lowes.

Something like this would be nice for small task such as computer work. I think it would work out well for car electronic as well if it’s powerful enough. I know some of the dash screw can be stubborn.
With that in mind quality is important. I bought a cheap power screwdriver (Channel Lock Dual Driver XL Compact Cordless Drill) before with the intention to use it for light task. It was such a piece of crap it so many way. The chuck wasn’t seating straight causing the screw to be wobbling around. So the simple task such as driving a screw or drilling a small hole becoming such a chore. Needless to say it quickly become one of my nephew fav toy 🙂

This is going to sound so… SO bad… but… I can only see this being useful as a toy motor. The kind of thing you build a K’Nex Car around, or a model of a merry-go-round. And it would be a fantastic motor, too!
But… As it sits right now, it’s a little too gimmicky for me. Kinda… cheap plastic where it should be metal, or heavier construction as a whole. Which is a shame, because like someone already said, it’s obvious someone who actually works has designed this thing. That holster design is absolutely drool-worthy. It just doesn’t quite meet the expectations I’d have for the perfect design of this thing. I’d prefer an interchangeable battery instead of a built-in, and for the hinged areas to be less plastic-knock-off, and more solid and metallic.
I’d love one of these if it wasn’t for those little details.

I still have mine that I purchased Christmas 2014. Wished I could find another just like it. The main thing it would do is run screws in on a door lock set without scratching the knob. You lost buy not purchasing one. I lost by not being able to get another.

It looks kinda nice, but I don’t see that much use for it at the DIY level. This is a tool for an electrician, a plumber, an electronics installer (car stereos, alarm systems) or something of that nature, where difficult installations/repairs are a daily occurrence. It will also speed you through jobs that would take longer with a manual screwdriver, and time is money.
The price (and probably the quality) came down, because you can’t sell a $200 low-powered, cordless screwdriver to the masses. You can, however, sell a $50.00 low-powered, cordless screwdriver to a lot of folks on the “cool factor” alone, whether they need one or not.
Lowering the price may actually hurt sales to it’s intended buyers (techs) who may feel it won’t be up to the tasks they need it for. They may soon have to come out with a “Professional Model” (a longer-lasting battery, metal gearing, etc.) in order to woo techs back to it. You can’t have a tool stop on you because you forgot to charge it, or because the gears were stripped or broke in the middle of a job.
I don’t have that kind of stuff coming up a lot (actually, I can’t remember the last time I needed something like this), so I won’t be buying one. It’s not useless; I just don’t see a need for it for the things I have to do. I have too many ratcheting, standard, offset, stubby, electronics and other styles of screwdrivers that work fine for the types of jobs I need to do around the house.
That, and medical bills coming in have caused a significant hit to my bank account. It’s funny how things like that cause you to focus on what is and isn’t important in your life.

This tool is more of a specialty tool where I’m sure will be very useful in a laboratory set type of scenario (there are laboratory experimenters that use your average dewalt drill to mix stuff around for example) or in hard to reach places.
I really can’t see the downside to the innovation (since welding automotive robots use such arms to weld), the only downside is that it is not a festool attachment lol. I’m guessing it uses 18650 batteries too that can be bought all over the place.
The charger looks like your generic 5v output too (the amp output mostly determins how fast to safly charge a battery)…I’m sure your generic cellphone charger can charge it too if you are the hacking type when the charger craps out and don’t want to spend the money to buy a new one, I would say 15-20 bucks for a new one.
I do like it and I would not mind if a regular drill implements this type of head in it…you can’t really appreciate innovation when you actually use it in a job site. I know this for a fact cause’ I use tools made specifically for doctors sometimes and makes my life easier. I also use nail clippers here and there for things where nail clippers are only made for clipping finger nails.
$50 is not a bad deal if it comes with good 18650 batteries, even better if they can be replaced but I would imagine it would take years to deplete them in such a tool.
Conclusion, not a bad idea. I can picture myself using it in a lot of different areas, and when owning it, discovering different areas where I was just settling with frustrations.

It would be nice if the unit used micro usb as the way it charges. I have seen a few smaller battery powered tools use this method to charge and its great. Saves money like you mention if the charger dies over the money a proprietary charger would cost.

I came across one and it will not charge. Probably 6 years old. The batteries are non replaceable . Unless you can take it apart and adapt new 18650 batteries to it. I noticed the newer versions do have a detachable battery pack that is replaceable

I bought one of these last night at Lowe’s. It wasn’t even on the shelf yet. They had to find it up on top of the rack, and open a box for me to have one. I put it through some tests last night, and it’s pretty impressive. I’m going to use it in my job, where you have many screws, and not a lot of room to use a standard drill type screwdriver. The only thing I didn’t like was the LED lighting. It’s an add-on and has a separate battery. It doesn’t come on when you hit the trigger. You have to manually turn it on and off when you want to use it. It uses a little watch type battery.

I purchased this yesterday at Lowes. I’m an engineer with the Four Seasons Hotel and intend to use it for small jobs like changing drawer tracks, door locks etc. I also purchased extra Dewalt tips(long ones) due to the short ones that come with it can only be used with the bulky extension. I don’t have to many good things to say about it aside from it having a lot of torque and it slips into your back pocket lovely. The placement of the directional switch is in the worst place possible, right where your hand goes so it hits the switch every time you grip it tight. Also every time you put the tool down it changes direction. The direction switch is also very small and it is hard to tell what direction the driver is set to without engaging it to find out. I find it to be noisy also. Well this was just day one with it and I do not plan on returning it I’m going to stick it out and see how it goes. Also I should add that you can use it like a regular screw driver to ensure tightness with out it slipping. I’m not a review writer in fact this is only my second review ever written, hope this helps other decide if it is right for them to purchase.

Update, it only lasted 3 days on the job, I think with the 2 knuckles it has to many gears in it and one of them stripped out, it no longer works 🙁 thumbs down on the Flip Out.

Based on the fact that it’s got plastic gears..It’s not meant for heavy duty workloads. It’s a little too bulky for my tastes to be used for PC repair. I think it either needs to be sturdier, or more compact for getting into REALLY tight places..like inside a PC case. This tool seems like it falls in between. Maybe it’s ok for around the house occasional lite work. It is hella sexy, and the robotic like design is appealing…if only it were made of steel.

They were supposed to move the forward/reverse switch.They replace the battery charging to a removeable rechargeable battery.This new unit was supposed to be on the market this past April.So far I have not seen any advertising on this.

Not impressed, the button that holds the battery for the light fell off several times before I lost it.The button that changes the drill from forward to reverse is right where you hold the drill to use it, so when you apply alittle pressure the button will move to neutral .needs to go back to the drawing board because it something that could be good with alittle tweaking..I would not recommend

I bought 2 for a large lighting retrofit job and they worked ok. I had one with a battery that would only hold a 1/3 charge and got a replacement at Lowes with no problem. HOWEVER! Please change the placement of the damn forward/reverse button It is constantly being switched off when you use the tool. Very irritating.

I want to give you all a heads up.I recently emailed the Flipout’s manufacture and was told they will be introducing a new model that will be introduced in April of 20`16.The model will have the forward/reverse switch moved.They have changed the battery feature.It is supposed to be removeable for recharging.Lowes has advertised the old model from last Christmas at $19.99.They had exclusive for last year.It left a lot to be desired.I am interested in the new model.

I’ve had mine for over a year now and it has worked very well. You have to get use to the forward/reverse switches location but once you do that it is very simple to use. It has plenty of power and torque for up to medium difficulty jobs. It isn’t designed for heavy duty work. It’s great for those around the house jobs your wife keeps coming up with just to make sure you’re not sitting around doing nothing.

Purchased one of these a year ago! The gears broke the second time I used it! Lowes did not have any more in store! Waited a few months and went back to Lowes and they had some in stock! They replaced it! Used the second one once and it worked fine! I charged it up after using it and placed it in a drawer in a work bench! I had not used it for 2 months! Tried to use it to put Christmas present together and found that the battery was dead! Plugged it up to charger an the “red” charging light activated for about 10 minutes and then cut off. Thinking that it was charged I tried to use it it would not work or charge at all after many attempts to get it to work! Frustrated! I like the tool when works properly!!!

I really thought this tool would be great. Not so! I found so many areas that could use a little improvement. The first day, after installing the button batteries for the light was the last time I ever saw the blue battery keeper or the batteries. I found way too much backlash in the drive train. There seems to be an excessive amount of backlash in the movable heads as well. The forward/reverse button was poorly placed, so as to cause your hand to hit the button while using the tool and shutting it off. Finally, after trying to loosen a very tight screw, stripped the gears in the top drive head. The only thing I liked about it, is the long battery life between charges. Great concept idea, but not ready for market.

I had purchased 2 at Christmas 2014.I had to return both.They were unable to charge the battery.I recently emailed the manufacture.I got an immediate answer.They told me that there will be a new model available in April.They have changed the battery.Also they are relocating the switch position.If you are able to pull up earlier comments.I had listed the factory address.If the new one proves trouble free I would buy one.The idea is terrific so different than other drivers.

It looked like a great idea until the problem with the on /neutral/ off / switch being highly misplaced arose. Yet with my minor degree in afro engineering and one roll of cheap chump Chinese electrical tape I wrapped 50 passes around then cut out where switches were located also drilling for charging port and now it’s not a problem. However not having replaceable battery and having to use tools for a living makes this a non-realistic product for me.

The only comment that I can make is that I had 2 that wouldn’t charge.I took them back to Lowe’s for credit.I wrote to the factory.I got a response that a new one would be available in April 2016.They moved the forward and reverse switch.They also made with a battery that charges in a unit separate from the drill.

Two years ago I purchased the Flipout and it was a disaster.I returned it to Lowes twice for final credit.I just received the new model and it is so far superior to the original model.If you look closely you don’t need to remove the battery.Just plug in the charging tip into the socket on the opposite side of the trigger mechanism.I hope you will like your unit as well as I do mine.It is one of the most useful of all drivers on the Market today.I am sure some tool manufactures will also introduce something in competition with this unit.It may start a revolution in driver design.

I just received your comment.Apparently you must have a different model than I have.my instruction sheet states never to remove the battery since it charges while remaining in the unit.The only time you need to remove it is eventual replacement

Bought mine at Lowe’s. The end cap has two depressions that are pressed to remove it. I still can’t figure out why it’s so hard for a senior to remove. Kinda like those child-proof Rx med bottles which are also adult-proof! Despite the end cap, I really like the screwdriver and think it’s an engineering marvel. I learned about it in a TV ad and had to have one.

Forgot to add this… once removed, it looks like the charger “cap” is supposed to slide into the device to charge the battery without having to remove it. I don’t see any kind of hole opposite the speed control that could be used to charge it. In fact, the charger cable doesn’t even come with a “pin” end.

I agree with all of the comments and responses relating to the performance of the Flip-Out. I have used mine for 2-years, tolerating the forward/reverse switch location, the illumination light battery cover issue, and the inability to retrieve 1-inch bits from the chuck. However, I am now experiencing a breakdown in the bit chuck. The chuck will inadvertinently fall out of the swivel head. If you can fine all the pieces and reassemble the head, the condition will keep reoccurring. I would expect Pell Industries to replace all defective models, but I have not received any feedback from my inquiry.

You apparently have the old model.They now have 2 new models One is an exclucive at Lowe’s.This model has a removeable rechargeable Lithium battery.They have repositioned the forward and reverse on the side.There is a second model that I purchased from Amazon.This model has a built in Lithium battery that has an external charger.They also have installed a lock to keep bits from falling out.It also has the forward /reverse moved to the side.I had 2 of the old disaster models that wouldn’t charge I returned to Lowe’s and waited out this newer model.It is day over night in performance.I do hope that in some way I have helped you.

I have both models of the flipout cordless screw driver. One with internal batteries and the other with the remove to charge battery pack. The latest model has very little power and the battery has a very short usage life, goes dead very quickly. My other model with the internal battery was great until the battery would not charge anymore. Want to replace the batteries but unsure where to buy them. Any ideas?

Why doesn’t the battery charge? The charge light goes on for 2 seconds and then goes off? This is a new charger as well. Any suggestions? This has 2 battery pack wired into the motor.

If I were you I would return to the store of purchase.If you bought it from Lowe’s they had exclusive.I had 2 units that went bad I took them back for credit.No problems.Thei initial offering was a disaster.They offered the unit long before the kinks were worked out.I have one know that is working perfectly.I do hope that this may have helped you.

Mine runs all the time when forward and reverse button is pushed back and forth, side run button does not affect anything

Does anyone know who manufactures this item? I can’t find anything about them online and my tools battery has completely died and will not charge. It seems this is a version that the battery has been solder in. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a similar issue with charging the battery. My daughter gave me one of these tools a couple of years ago and I absolutely LOVE it. I have had NO problems with it at all until now. It has been a “go-to” tool for difficult spots (saved many scrapped knuckles) so I feel lost not being able to recharge it.

Your screwdriver is good in theory but the fully charged battery only lasts through about 2 screws. I am very disappointed in it. Love the idea of it but wished it worked at least through a whole job. Thanks for listening. Everet K Horton.
