T-Rex Duct Tape

T-Rex Duct Tape

ShurTech has in recent years come out with a new super-duty duct tape that they call T-Rex Tape. In addition to being thicker than general purpose duct tapes, T-Rex tape has an aggressive adhesive that provides better holding power, a UV-resistant skin to prevent sunlight-caused weakening over time, and reinforced layers for strength.

Each tape has 3 layers: an extra-thick adhesive layer, a high tensile and woven fabric “co-extrusion” reinforcement layer for strength, and a polyethylene skin layer. All three layers are combined and locked together using heat and pressure.

Claims

  • All-weather
  • Works longer
  • Holds stronger
  • 2X the bite, 3X the staying power, 4X the holding power

The tape is 17 mils thick and comes in 1.88″ x 35 yd rolls.

It’s available at Walmart stores, and is listed on Amazon for $30/roll. It’s made in the USA.

I’ve never heard of this tape before now, but it doesn’t look like a brand new product. Perhaps ShurTech merely revived their marketing efforts? Here’s a promo video:

And here’s a factoid: Did you know that ShurTech also owns Duck Tape and Frog Tape? I wonder why they didn’t just stick T-Rex tape under their Duck Tape brand.

I also wonder how T-Rex Tape compares to Gorilla Tape. In theory, couldn’t a T-Rex eat a gorilla? Unless of course the gorilla heads into a forest where the T-Rex would have difficulty moving quickly between the trees.

Unless that gorilla was King Kong…

Sounds interesting. I may take a look at it, or at least try to remember it when a need arises.

But my favorite tape discovery in recent years has been Gaffer’s tape. The pressure-sensitive adhesive holds strong, but doesn’t leave any residue when removed. Pricing is similar to T-Rex tape (it’s not cheap).

Gaff tape and Spike tape have long been staples of stagehands. Now stop talking about them so we can keep them our secret.

A slightly (?) different roll sold at Wal-Mart for a lot less:

I wonder why such a huge price difference. It’s the same elsewhere – $20+ and shipping.

Since the Wal-Mart offering says 35 yards (not 40) and Gray (not silver) – I wonder if this is a made-for-Wal-Mart exclusive. Like you, I can see Amazon boosting the price a bit (as I suspect they often do) to cover their “free shipping” – but not by $22+

I am sure I am going to get some grief for this, but I am surprised this didn’t show up in the made in USA section of the site given Stuart mentioned this was American made. Maybe this is made in USA of global components?

Pretty cool tape, definitely something I’d be interested in having at least once.

Oops. I forgot to check off my little “Made in the USA” box, that’s all. Thanks for noticing!

Just glad that didn’t come off badly. I didn’t mean that in a rude sense, but glad that helped.

I’d like to see a T-Rex try to spool off a little tape and tear it with their short arms! I’ll keep an eye out for this stuff and maybe grab a roll just to try out.

Not very well known but if you know any commercial glaziers see if you can get a piece of commercial glazing tape. That stuff will hold your car together.

I’ve always been very happy with Nashua 357 tape. It’s not quite as heavy as this but it’s always been strong enough for my applications. Gaffer tape is more useful in my current job, lots of cords to carpet kind of taping needs.

Its $7.84 at Walmart and $11.00 online at Tapebrothers.com. Packaging looks the same. The one at TapeBrothers is also 40 yds. Don’t think I want to spend 30 bucks at Amazon if its the same stuff. If it isn’t that’s pretty misleading.

Just bought some at Walmart for $7.84 a roll, Now I’ll go home and compare it to the normal stuff and see how I like it. I can handle 7.84, 30 bucks, not so much.
