Tajima makes a two-handed utility knife for use in heavy duty cutting applications.
The Tajima Strong J-Grip utility knife exerts 55 lbs of locking force. It features a 1mm thick stainless steel sleeve, elastomer non-slip handle grip, and lanyard hole.
It also has a recessed slider button to minimize accidental release of the blade lock.

Tajima says that the Strong J-Grip knife, model DC-690, can be used for cutting thick materials such as carpet, thermal insulation, plasterboard, and plywood.
It can also be used for caulk removal.
From the images and description, it seems that there are two benefits. First, the shape of the handle gives you hand positions for both control or guidance, and another for cutting pressure.
The 55 lb of locking force can also come in handy when cutting high-drag materials.
They ship the knife with a 10-pack of blades.
It takes heavy duty J-Power 0.9″ 22mm snap-style blades. I wasn’t able to find a SKU for replacements.

That’s a clever idea. It’s not something I would use regularly, but I can foresee applications where the cutting force of a two-handed tool would be useful – and it’s not terribly expensive for something specialized like that.

I’d like to see someone cut plywood with a utility knife. I didn’t see a spec but maybe 1/4 inch an under plywood? 1/8 inch an under?

Our guys sometimes used to cut small pieces of Luan underlayment with a utility knife to fill gaps – but I’m thinking it was under 1/4 – possibly 5 or 6 mm

I’ve trimmed 5mm ply with (chunky metal bodied) utility knives before. Needs multiple cuts if you want it to be straight, but you can caveman your way through if necessary.

I don’t work in a trade that would have any use for such a thing, but it seems to me that the handle might get in the way of certain cuts. A handle that for instance can swing and lock would be nice (I imagine). But that’s hard to do because of the length of the blade, which limits placement of the handle. Also
So why can’t somebody make something similar that uses regular utility blades? The short blade would allow repositionable handles more easily.

We mostly had moved on to using Fein Supercuts – with knife edge blades = for removing tough caulking and gasketing materials (plate glass windows, shower doors etc. in the remodeling business – and elastomeric materials in our fabrication shop). But looking over some old tool inventories I see that we owned some 2-handed utility knives from CRL:

Olfa also has one (Olfa LL) with a pretty long handle. I have one, spare blades store in a flip-out in the handle, just uses regular 18mm snap blades that are sourced easily enough.
I dig it. Sometimes a regular utility knife just doesn’t have the ergonomics etc for the job.

So I followed the Amazon link and ordered one – it came without any blades at all. Returned to be replaced, but we will see if the second try comes with the blades this time
