Target LED Flashlights Pose Fire & Burn Hazard

Target LED FLashlight Recall

Target has voluntarily recalled 55,000 6-piece LED flashlight sets due to a fire and burn hazard. It has been reported that, when turned on, these flashlights can heat up to the point of smoking or melting. Thus far there have been four incidents, including two minor burn hand injuries.

These sets were priced at $10 and were sold from Oct 2010 through Dec 2011. The remedy is to return the flashlight sets to any Target store for a full refund.

Sounds to me like a major design flaw where flashlight bodies and LED modules were slapped together without regard to proper heatsink design. This is why everyone should be cautious of all those “special buys” that pop up during the winter holiday shopping season.

    Guys,

you can buy pretty amazing quality flashlights that are machined from aluminum with Creed emitter for less than this cr..p from Target.
I’ve bought several lights from http://www.dealextreme.com and can’t be happier. They have free shipping too. The only drawback is that it takes 2-3 week to get it. They ship it from Hon-Kong.

I’ve heard a lot of hit or miss about DealExtreme as well. A <$10 no-name Cree LED flashlight is not going to be as reliable as a name-brand that cost several times as much. I'm not saying that one needs to spend a fortune for quality, but one usually does get what they pay for.

Ha, yep, you get what you pay for. But usually that just means the cheap thing breaks or falls apart, not catches fire.
