I ordered a pair of the slip joints, and was very impressed with them when they arrived. I have also been flipping through an SK catalog this morning and can’t help but notice the striking similarity between the Tekton slip joint pliers and the SK slip joints. As I haven’t actually handled the SK pliers side by side, I could be wrong, but they look identical to me. Is it safe to assume Wilde makes pliers for SK also? The SK Pliers are Probably made by Western forge, as they like SK are owned by Ideal.

What do people even use these for any more? The only thing I can think of is to destroy something lol because that’s pretty much all it’s good for. But really what do people use these for? Pulling on some junk plastic tubing or junk hose? Junk wire pulling?

Cotter keys come to mind. Oh, and roller chain. Holding something hot. I could go on, slip joint pliers are my most used single tool.

What wouldn’t you use them for? Lots of professionals and DIYers still use tongue and groove Channellock-style pliers, and slip joint pliers as well.
I’m not ready to banish slip joint pliers from my toolbox yet.

I don’t really know. My Knipex Cobras (and pliers wrench if I don’t want to mar the edges) fully replaced anything slip joints would be used for.

Absolutely, but I have slip joint pliers in every tractor, sprayer, combine, truck, tool box, whatever.
I probably have 15-20 pairs, with one always close to hand. I also have the Cobras and pliers wrench, but only one pair each and in my shop box where there isn’t any chance of them being left on a machine or accidentally “planted” in the field.

Rusted fasteners are the first thing that comes to mind. That or a pair of vise grips.
They’re also good for keeping an eye bolt or hook from turning while trying to tighten up a nut on the other end.
Like any tool, it is a matter of using the right tool for the right job. Also, your typical DIY type person usually doesn’t have the spare money on hand to throw at a special tool just to keep from marring something that nobody is likely going to see anyway.

I go for the slip-joint pliers when I need a straight jaw, as opposed to the angled jaws of groove-joints.

I use mine several times a month despite having a well stocked tool chest. Their usefulness depends much on the kind and variety of work that one is doing. A good set of slip joint pliers can last a lifetime.

I ordered two pairs of these – the 10″ and 8″ slip joint pliers. The 10″ pliers came in today and they are disappointing. They are rough. The casting (are they cast? They look cast.) looks like it was sloppy. There is a large seam on the side that even creates an overlapping groove with a sharp edge. If they are forged, it looks like the forge slipped when they were pressed.
And a more minor issue, the plastic dip on one handle is noticeably shorter than the other handle. I don’t think I’ve ever had a pair of pliers with lop-sided dip like that. I may have been willing to live with that, but along with the rough casting seam, they are going back.
I’m disappointed, since I was drawn to the USA made status and the sale price. I was buying these two pairs as a test and if they looked good, was planning to get seven more pairs. If the 8″ pair looks good tomorrow, I’ll exchange the 10″ for another and press on. If they are rough, too, I’m sending both back and going back to Channellock or Proto.

A positive update – I received the 8″ pair of Tekton slip joint pliers today and they are correct. So, I’m sending the defective 10″ pair back to Amazon for a replacement and will also place an order for the additional pairs of Tektons.

Another very positive update. A rep from Tekton contacted me and wanted to make it right. She sent me a replacement pair of pliers pronto! I appreciate the great customer service and that they took the initiative to get in touch with me.
(They didn’t ask me to post this – I’m just very satisfied with their customer service. I’m always looking to do business with companies that are making efforts to sell USA made products.)
