Home Depot – Tool Deals of the Day
Today’s Home Depot special buys feature Milwaukee cordless power tool combo kits, bundles, hand tools, and accessory bundles. There are also a couple of Ryobi and Ridgid deals mixed in.
As usual, there are both new and returning Milwaukee cordless bundles, and so you’ll have to look through the list carefully.
One of the better deals, in my opinion, is the Milwaukee M12 Fuel stubby 3/8″ impact wrench kit with free battery, for $259.

I really like some Komelon versions I have. Standout is just average but I’ve never cared. This LED equipped version seems “interesting” but really…. If it’s not your only tape won’t the battery potentially go out before you really really need it and don’t have a light source otherwise?

It should be interesting to test for how long it holds a charge. Lithium ion batteries are supposed to hold a charge for about six months. I know for sure that my power tool batteries hold the charge for at least two months.

Thanks for the heads-up Stuart, I’ve been looking for a big set of hole saws for a long time now. HD has often had the Big Hawg 3-tooth carbide ones on sale but I needed the standard type, that 28-pc Hole Dozer set for $155 is a nice deal.
Funny to see that Amazon had the Wilton model 104 C-clamps on sale, that was not something I was expecting to see from Amazon. If anyone needs serious C-clamps for welding or other heavy-duty purposes those are it! I bought four of those over 20 years ago and it is absolutely mindboggling what kind of abuse they have survived over the years and they still work great.

Heavy-duty may be in the eyes of the beholder. I’d call those Wilton clamps as medium-heavy duty. For really heavy-duty applications we always went with “bridge clamps” – like this one:

But we had mostly ones from Williams. When you buy one of these you need to specify the screw travel (full closing or not).

That “Save on Select Pliers” page has some locking pliers and diagonal cutters from Denali, an “Amazon brand,” which is new to me. I wouldn’t buy them if they were free.
But that page also has KNIPEX Cobra QuickSet Pump Pliers (8721300) (12″) for about six dollars off, and I’m trying to come up with a reason to buy them.

Heh. And that Measuring Tools page offers this 12′ pocket tape measure from Crescent, but the reviews complain about bad markings, WRONG markings (not 1/10s” as pictured), poor chrome plating, etc. I guess it’s counterfeit.

Well it turns out there might be a reason why it’s so expensive. It’s an unusual tape measure with 1/10″ markings, instead of the usual 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, etc.
On the other hand, some of the reviews say they didn’t get the 1/10″ markings. Those could be counterfeit products.

Yeah, the decimal tapes are more. But Lufkin’s really gone downhill, IMHO. Not surprising since it’s an Apex brand. Why make it in the US if our offshore factory will pump it out?

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the M18 Surge impact driver? Today’s promo is quite attractive. I am looking for an impact driver to use for installing plywood subfloors in an occupied residence. I don’t need a ton of torque for screws and the quiet operation sounds appealing. However, some of the reviews on HD are quite negative about failures, leaking fluid, dramatic loss of power, etc. Just curious of folks here have any feedback?

No problems but I don’t use it daily. I can’t stand the sound of regular impacts now. Actually, I think I’d rather have the m12 version but that wasn’t available when I bought mine (and not part of this sale).

I use one and quite like it. I got a normal mechanical driver so I wasn’t thrashing the Surge putting in dozens of structural screws, but up to that point it had done everything I needed it to, usually on the number 2 setting. It’s definitely my go to in occupied houses and is just generally my go-to, period. I haven’t had it for years and years, but it hasn’t shown signs of failure. I try and use the mechanical driver when appropriate, like framing or working outdoors, but that’s just to help extend the usable life of the Surge.
It should work for you, but if you have an entire house worth of subfloor to put down, I’d look at some of the quick drive stand-up guns. If I recall correctly, they aren’t offensively loud and should make quick work of the floors. I’m pretty sure you can rent them for a day at a time or so. Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your replies and your suggestions. I’m just installing a new subfloor in two bathrooms and not the entire house. There is someone in the house on Zoom calls during the day on another floor and I already know a regular impact is going to be too loud. I can’t decide between M12 and M18. Because I have a lot of M12 batteries, maybe I will just go that route. I haven’t see a good sale yet like the one today on the M18 Surge.

Howdy! I picked up the m18 surge on black Friday. It was a good tool. I ended up giving it to a friend and shopping around for the m12. I had a bunch of m12 and no other m18. I personally like the m12 a little better. Totally just personal preference. Doresoom has good reviews of both. There is a sweet deal today for a combo with the m12 surge.

I love/d mine. I got a kit with the first gen m18 fuel surge and drill about 7 years ago(apparently) the surge has started acting up recently and i just got a 12v one as a replacement. Whenever I use a normal impact im startled by the sharp noise. Rarely if ever used ear oro with the surge but would advise it with a regular impact.

Has anyone heard any rumblings about milwaukee updating the M18 surge driver? I’ve wanted one for a while now but it seems like it’s been out long enough that a “new” version should be coming. I think the standard drivers have been updated at least 1 or 2 gens since the surge was released.

Home Depot claims that it’s a best seller – and reviews seem to be about 90% positive (1’s and 2’s). There may be some QC issues – with most of the negative comments talking about premature failures. But otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be a big incentive for Milwaukee to change it out immediately. But – as is often the case, I may be wrong.
Anyway. I always think we are most effective when buying tools based on need – not just because something is the latest and greatest. So, if you really don’t need it – then waiting is prudent even if a new model release is not imminent.

I’ve had pretty good luck with those OMT blades, plus they’re US-made and work fine in the DeWalt multitool.
The newer style storage case used for the 28-piece Hole Dozer sets is awfully… not for me. During the holidays I bought the one that came with Sawzall blades that seemed like they were to fit in the little flip top box in the case, but they don’t fit right. No problem, I keep my blades in the lid of the Toughsystem case I use for the saw. So I put pilot bits and other stuff in there, but the lid will not stay closed. So I threw it away. I eventually moved all the hole saws back to an older Milwaukee hole saw case for EDC, and used one of the half-size Packout cases provided with the large Big Hawg sets. I doubled up one set into one case and put a nearly complete Hole Dozers set in another. WIth some high density cut foam to hold everything, it’s a much better solution.
Oh yeah, and that case also LOOKS cheap. It’s glossy and nothing like the old cases. The movable pins are a small consolation, they tried to improve one thing and devolved the rest. Actually, I would prefer a packaging engineer figures out how to store things instead of making me design my own. That’s why the old blow molded case with the fixed size depressions works. I can fit the proper one where it goes, and then nest two more (in between sizes or diamond/carbide versions).

In other news, the Craftsman blowout of RP-replaced items continues, with my local Lowe’s lowering the CMCD721 hammer drill to $23.77… this is a US-made brushless model with a full metal chuck. I needed one to use the chuck as a replacement for one of my Dewalt drills. The RP-replacement I believe is identical except for the RP sticker, which you can probably buy from servicenet (or at least the whole housing, which are usually surprisingly reasonably priced).

I received my order earlier in the day and you were not kidding about the case for the 28-pc hole dozer set. I do like its compact size but it is very flimsy. It looks and feels cheap. It’s not well thought out either; that extra insert container which is supposed to hold the arbors and spare pilot bits is an odd shape and you really have to play around to get all the bits to fit inside. The twist-lock posts which hold the saws are far too flimsy to hold that amount of weight. Honestly? The case is garbage.
The tools themselves look great though!
