There are a lot of things that I want to share with you today, and some of the topics aren’t quite deserving of their own separate posts. So, I lumped everything together in a sort of big what’s new kind of post.
I really don’t like writing multi-topic posts, as I know it can be slow and maybe even frustrating to have to wade through parts you’re not interested in. But if you like this style of post, please let me know. It seems like a good format for sharing quick news tidbits and advance review recommendations.
And as a reminder, have you entered our Klein non-contact voltage tester with flashlight giveaway? If yes, thumbs up. If not, what are you waiting for? Don’t forget to enter our KC Tool “pick your prize” giveaway as well!

Reader Question: Must-Have Specialty Hand Tools and Accessories?
Adam also asked for some tool recommendations:
I do mostly plumbing (and a little bit of electrical). Are there any specialty hand tools or power tool accessories that you just can’t live without? I’ve got a pretty good assortment of the basic stuff (pliers, etc.), but there always seem to be cool and useful things out there that I’ve never heard of.
Hmm… Cool and useful tools? Check out my Ultimate Tool Gift Guide, which has lots of great upgrade ideas. Off the top of my head, that’s where you’ll find a lot of offbeat hand tools. The other solution: take a couple of hours and check out our archive of hand tool posts.
Deal: Milwaukee M18 Fuel Drill XC Kit
Adam wrote in about a Milwaukee M18 Fuel drill/driver deal:
Not sure if this even worth bothering with, since it’s such a small discount, but HD has the Milwaukee 2603-22 kit on sale for $254.00 through June 21st, 2015. It’s only about a 9% discount, but better than no discount at all.
Also, thanks for posting my USA drill bit question. The information from both you and the comments was very helpful, as always.
Hmm…. 9% isn’t much, but it’s also a 9% discount on a cordless drill kit that’s very rarely discounted.
If I were planning to get that Fuel drill, the savings might be enough to accelerate my purchase. But other than that, it doesn’t scream out “WOW what a great deal” to me.
According to Milwaukee, it comes with (2) 4.0Ah XC battery packs. Here’s a quick discussion about this model.
And remember, the 2603 is the top choice in our Best Cordless Drills recommendations.

Deal: Dewalt 20V Max Hammer Drill and Impact Driver Combo
The folks over at ToolNut are offering a great price on this Dewalt DCK290L2 20V Max premium hammer drill/driver and impact driver kit. Once you add the kit to your cart, you’d see that the ToolNut price is $20 less than elsewhere. $20 isn’t a lot, but it’s still $20.
This combo comes with Dewalt’s brushed motor 3-speed hammer drill and their brushed impact driver, and (2) 3.0Ah batteries.
Stepping up to the DCK296M2 combo, which comes with Dewalt’s latest brushless 3-speed hammer drill and brushless impact driver, as well as (2) XR 4.0Ah Li-ion battery packs, will cost you an extra $70 via Amazon and elsewhere, or an extra $90 if you consider ToolNut’s special pricing on the DCK290L2 kit.
Both kits come with a Dewalt 20V/12V Max charger and a canvas carrying case.
It’s uncertain as to when the deal ends.

Deal: Milwaukee Corded Sawzall Reciprocating Saw
Another Adam sent in a deal tip about this Milwaukee 6519-31 corded Sawzall:
I had to run down to Home Depot on my way to work and I saw that there were some things on sale for Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Ryobi. They had only finished putting up the Milwaukee display so I didn’t see what was on sale for the other brands.
-Sawzall Reciprocating Saw
-There was also a combo kit that had M12 12-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/4 in. Hex Screwdriver and Impact Driver for $99. I tried to find the combo on their website, but it doesn’t look like it’s on there.
I’m sure all the regular readers of ToolGuyd know about this sale, but there’s been so many times when things are on sale and I didn’t know about it until I looked here at ToolGuyd.
PS-I love when you post the sales that are on Amazon. It’s either too hard to find all the sales on there or too tedious for me too look through all of them.
It is uncertain as to when the deal ends. Maybe when supplies run out? There are a bunch of these saws in stock at my local Home Depot, so the deal might be valid until or thru Father’s Day.

Oh, and here’s the link to that M12 screwdriver and impact driver combo deal.
Deal: Milwaukee M18 Drill and Impact Driver Combo Sale Price and Free Battery
Kyle writes:
I don’t known how good a deal this is but the local HomeDepot has the milwaukee 18v (2697-22) combo kit on clearance.
I don’t like clearance deals, as they can be very difficult to take advantage of, but I noticed that Home Depot has the same combo with a free bonus battery pack, for $279. The deal is valid thru 6/30/2015.
It comes with what look to be Milwaukee’s last-generation hammer drill and impact driver, and (3) 3.0Ah battery packs, including the free bonus pack. It also comes with an M12/M18 multi-voltage charger and canvas carrying bag.

Deal: Wiha Tools at Carbide Processors
Our friends at Carbide Processors sent me a heads-up about some specials they’re running on Wiha hand tools and sets.
Just wanted to let you and all your fans know that we are currently running a HUGE Wiha sale, up to 55%. The savings include all Wiha Hand Tools and Wiha Sets! Maybe a Father’s Day gift or just save lots of money on really cool tools 🙂
No coupon code required, and as always FREE shipping on orders of $150 or more.
It looks like there are some nice stuff on sale for anyone in the market for multi-bit precision screwdrivers, or high voltage screwdrivers and pliers.
I also saw that their recent newsletter mentions you can get a free SOG mini multi-tool on orders $75+. To do so, enter “SOG” in the comments section when you place your order. And don’t forget about your free registration gift (I picked a Bondhus mini ball hex set), which can also be added to any order.
Just a Couple More Tool Deals
- Ridgid Micro Inspection Camera for $99 at Amazon (We discussed this deal before)
- Ryobi 18V One+ (2) pack of 4.0Ah batteries for $99 at Home Depot
- Dewalt 12V Max cordless screwdriver kit for $99 at Home Depot
- Milwaukee M12 2407-22 drill/driver kit for $99 at Home Depot (mention in our Best Cordless Drills guide and several other times before that)
- Bosch 12V hammer drill (bare tool) for $85 at Amazon (bring the order above $200 with eligible Bosch tools to save an extra $50)
Round Table Tool Talk
After Dewalt’s morning media event and factory tour (did you check out my Dewalt’s “Built in the USA” post yet?), I breezed through the 3+ hour wait with Dan and Eric from Tools in Action and John from Workshop Addict.
So what did we do? A Round Table Tool Talk about some of the stuff we just saw. Since we were at the airport, Dan’s iPhone was the best we could do, but he mixed in some nice footage that they captured at the event.
We’re all going to get together again soon, and hopefully the next video won’t be in an airport food court.
Bosch Logo Spotted at the Dewalt Factory
I found it amusing that Dewalt is using some kind of Bosch anti-static fixturing support at their factory, somewhere in the motor production line. There’s no shame in that, I just found it amusing, kind of like finding an easter egg.
Gear Envy: Dewalt’s Using the Latest Air Filter and Regulator Units
I also noticed that Dewalt’s using the latest SMC air filter/regulator/lubricator system at many workstations. I have the old models in my workspace, and never thought I’d have gear envy over something so mundane.
You can tell this is the new series by the “urban white” color scheme, and how the air filter has a clear bowl guard. Mine has a metal bowl guard and a small squarish gauge on the regulator, as pictured in my recent 5 Unavoidable Nuisances of Compressed Air Systems post. It’s good to see that the regulator knob has been enlarged in the new series.
New Dewalt Tools!!
I saved the best for last! Please try to act surprised when you see these same photos in upcoming posts.
This is a brief teaser of what’s coming. I’ll have new tool posts up as soon as I can, but for some of these products all I have right now are my photos since the official specs and details aren’t available yet.
Bluetooth-Connected Batteries
Yep, there’s going to be an App that notifies you when your batteries are done charging, and when they’re low on charge. You can even disable the battery if it is taken too far out of range. Want to know more? It can tell you its temperature too. These batteries will cost $20 more than Dewalt’s regular Li-ion packs.
Bluetooth Tough System Radio and Speaker System!
I think this could be the coolest cordless radio I’ve seen so far. It’s one seriously sweet boombox-shaped radio, and it has very nice subtle touches too, such as the rubberized control panel. Pricing is going to be a little over $200, which lines it up with Milwaukee’s premium Bluetooth radio.
Industrial Ball Bearing Tool Storage
I like what I saw in Dewalt’s latest ball bearing tool storage combo. Seems solidly built, and they said it’s aimed at industrial markets.
You can’t see it in this image, but in coming days I’ll talk about how Dewalt is expanding their open stock mechanics tool selection. In other words, individual sockets and wrenches are coming! And I’m told the tools have been completely redesigned, presumably for better strength and performance.
Comfy Screwdrivers
There are some nice hex-shanked screwdrivers coming out. One thing I liked is that the slotted drivers are hollow ground.
One-Piece Steel Hammers
At first swing, these new one-piece steel hammers seem pretty decent.
Small 20V Max Blower
One Dewalt rep said this is ideal for blowing the dust out of masonry holes, and not really for general jobsite cleanup, but someone else said the opposite and that it’s suited for general jobsite cleanup. Either way, a new small-sized blower is on the way!
20V Max Threaded Rod Cutter
A Dewalt product manager said that they’re also looking for ways to expand the usefulness of this tool beyond cutting threaded rods. The rotating jaws can be removed and user-replaced, so maybe there will be an attachment for cutting small pipes or something like that.
More Ridgid Gen5X Tools Now Available
Some more of Ridgid’s new Gen5X cordless power tools are now available, such as their bare tool palm sander ($70 via Home Depot).
You can see the growing listing here, which now includes a combo kit, this sander, a gooseneck LED worklight, and a hybrid fan.
Tom
That’s one hell of a post! Lot to digest!
Stuart
Took a long time to hammer out as well. But I hope you saw my point that none of these sections could really be a post of its own.
Nathan
Thanks for the monster post!
Here’s another deal heads up:
I have been watching for another “+free battery” Build your own Combo sale on Milwaukee power tools at Home Depot (the one where you buy a bare tool and get a matching battery for free). It hasn’t materialized for Father’s Day as I had hoped, but it turns out CPO is running it. There are options for both 2 Ah and 4 Ah bonus batteries and it seems to include even the latest FUEL models.
Stuart
Wow, there are some great deals at CPO tools, thanks for the tip! It’s a mess to navigate all of the different deals there, so I added just left a single link.
As you mentioned, they brought back the “build your own combo” deal (https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/milwaukee-m12-custom-tool-combos-deal-112014/%3C/a%3E%29, which is a mess to explain by itself. It doesn’t look like they expanded the selection of “Group A” and “Group B” bare tools that are eligible for the deal, but there are still 20 options to choose from.
Dave
Stuey,
Thanks for writing up this informative post! I’m looking forward to reading your future article on the redesigned and new Dewalt hand and mechanic tools. This might be the reason why Sears recently put on sale and blowing out a number of Dewalt mechanic and wrench sets from floor inventory. Who else will carry these new Dewalt hand and mechanic tools besides Sears, Home Depot, and Hartville Hardware?
Stuart
You’re welcome!
I barely had a chance to look over the new tools at the media event, and will try to get some wrenches and other tools sent my way for testing later on.
I do have 2 of the new modular socket sets, and the quality seems to be decent.
Dewalt has a HUGE pool of experience to draw from. Their mechanics tools are developed by the Stanley hand tool team, which I presume is responsible for Stanley, Blackhawk, Proto, and Mac hand tools. Even if not, I’m sure they pass know-how back and forth.
Some of Dewalt’s hand tools are a little clunky, such as their bulky but super-strong adjustable wrenches, but I think their mechanics tools are nice. I’ve tested the older style wrenches, and didn’t find much fault with them, except for lack of open stock availability.
Some independent tool dealers are starting to carry the modular sets, I’m not sure who will carry the open stock items.
If you search around using the model numbers from my modular Dewalt tool set post (https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/dewalt-mechanics-tool-sets-modules/%3C/a%3E%29, you’ll see some of the retailers carrying these tools.
Acme carries some SKUs, Ace Tool and Summitt Racing carry some others. I think that, once distribution is in full swing, there will be plenty of more purchasing options.

Are there any new dewalt tools that we haven’t seen yet?
Stuart
When have you seen any of the Dewalt tools shown in this post before? They’re all new. There are a couple of other new ones too – you’ll see more about them here soon.
Chris
I was just wondering if there was any left besides what you posted today… I figured there was more but wanting to make sure

RE: Bosch at Dewalt…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1xfz1sEXdA
Kontronik has something to do with Bosch’s brushless tech. Which is slightly crazy given what I know about Kontronik in R/C.
Stuart
There weren’t any Bosch motors involved here, at least that I can tell. The Bosch branding was only found on the anti-static fixtures.
GM
The fixtures probably come from Bosch Rexroth which is a Bosch subsidiary specialised in manufacturing equipment, production lines etc. This is a very large company and their equipment is used in manufacturing plants all over the world.
Stuart
Good point! I assumed the t-slot extrusions were 80/20 but they could very well be Bosch Rexroth. That might still be a reach, as these didn’t look like off-the-shelf sleds or automation parts.
Oscar
Speaking about Bosch , has there been any news on the 12v brushless impact driver ?
Stuart
Not for the USA market =( .
KL
Wow!
Ok, the Milwaukee 2697 deal ain’t so great. The 2691 kit is $169 at HD’s right now and should be the same EXCEPT regular drill instead of hammer drill. Add about $128 from online retailers and your 3rd battery could be a 5.0 – worth the premium.
I don’t understand the Bluetooth batteries? Bluetooth range isn’t THAT great. If my phone can pick it up I can SEE the charger….? I guess the temp thing is cool but I’ve never needed it before.
Stuart
I wrote about the 2691 kit deal last week – https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/milwaukee-m18-cordless-drill-impact-combo-deal-062015/%3C/a%3E . It is a great price!
Don’t forget, the 2691 kit comes with compact battery packs, the 2697 kit comes with XC extended capacity battery packs.

For the gardeners among us – I got a email about a clearance on DeWit (nice Dutch) garden tools:
http://www.gardentoolcompany.com/collections/dewit-garden-tools
Eric Hamilton
Any estimated dates on availability on the new DeWalt batteries and radio?
Stuart
Between the summer and maybe October? I’m going by memory here. The new thread cutter and blower won’t be out until October I believe, and so everything else should be out sooner.
Eric Hamilton
Ok, thanks. Super excited about these new toys! I’m getting ready to buy into the tough system, so that new radio is just icing on the cake.
Andrew
Thanks for the great post! Love these type of updates.
Albert
Why would you leave out the most important DCN 660???
Mizzourob
With the launch of a full range of DeWalt pneumatic tools, does that mean that Bostitch is now dead? DeWalt rather quietly launched the pneumatic mechanic’s tools last fall that is slowly rolling out to Lowe’s
Ken
Bostitch is still alive and well
Mizzourob
Both Bostitch and DeWalt are Stanly Black and Decker (SBD) brands; when was the last time there was a new Bostitch tool? I think it was re-branded 20 volt Porter Cable tools for WalMart about a year ago.
Stuart
Bostitch’s bread and butter are their air nailers, and I guess their compressors must sell well too.
I don’t think Dewalt will position the new air nailers to compete with Bostitch. You might never (or hardly?) see these Dewalt nailers at retail locations where Bostitch nailers are sold.
Ton
I would never shop at CPO again. They have the worst customer service. If you receive everything the way you expect the first time then good for you, if you need to contact them for any reason, good luck getting anything out of them.
Ed
I order from CPO probably 10 to 12 times a year and have gotten great service every time.
firefly
Great post, I love the Dewalt tool storage combo. Love the color as well. I am not a big fan of the all bright yellow color so I am glad they tone that down :).
Been thinking of getting a few 12V tool, I currently have the Bosch 12V system. They have been great but I have been eyeing the sub compact bandsaw from the red man… Decision decision…
