ToolGuyd Tested Tools Giveaway Part 1 (Dec 2013)

Dec 22, 2013 Stuart 34 Comments

If you buy something through our links, ToolGuyd might earn an affiliate commission.

We are looking to give away the following used, tested, and reviewed tools:

Black & Decker 20V Platinum Drill/Driver Kit
Kobalt Hypercoil LED Worklight
Kobalt Triple Cut Utility Cutters
Kobalt Magnum Grip Locking Pliers
Husky Reversa Adjustable Wrench (large only, as the small one is MIA)

These tools are all in like-new condition, but lack packaging and in some cases instructions, so we’re giving them away as-is.

They will be provided as part of a single giveaway gift package.

Some of these tools we like, some of them we hate, but what they all have in common is that we probably won’t use or test them further. Rather than leave them to collect dust, we wanted to offer them to readers.

How to Enter: Leave a comment at the end of this post to express your interest in the giveaway gift package. Then, leave comments – genuine and thoughtful ones – in response to at least (4) other posts (excluding other giveaway posts) before the close of the entry period. The comments can be left all at once or spread over time.

To win, you must have commented at least 4 times, not counting giveaway posts, before the close of the entry period. Past comments DO count.

There will be one winner who will be selected at random. I italicized winner because we really mean gift recipient. Since these tools are not brand new, I feel better calling them gifts and not giveaway prizes.

You must reside in the continental USA to be eligible to receive the gift package.

There will be (1) gift package.

Entry period ends 12/31/13 (11:59pm ET).

The Kobalt and Husky tools were purchased, the Black & Decker drill kit was supplied by Black & Decker.

Stuart, thanks for the opportunity. I recently purchased some irwin vise grip pliers to round out my always-on-my-truck toolkit, and broke them on the first day when trying to remove a bathtub drain on a job. Needless to say, I’m in need of some higher-quality locking pliers and I sure hope these Kobalt ones would work! I support and enjoy your website with great enthusiasm — as a remodeling contractor, I am simply always looking for good equipment to make my job easier… and in reality, so I can focus on the fun of building as a craft. Happy holidays.

You should know that I did not have good luck with those Kobalt locking pliers. But, maybe they’ll work better for your needs.

      Happy Holidays to you too!

“I recently purchased some irwin vise grip pliers to round out my always-on-my-truck toolkit, and broke them on the first day when trying to remove a bathtub drain on a job.”

As a person who has removed many bathtub drains, I can’t imagine how you broke them (the bath tub drain fragile and old metal would crack first). Also, I can’t imagine why you would use vise grips to remove delicate metal (mixture of copper and galvanized metals I believe..i.e. That fight oxidation).

This is a great idea Stuart! Thanks for your generosity! I know a couple of those items you sure don’t mind getting rid of 😛 but it would be interesting to see if there is anything redeeming in those triple cut utility cutters, haha 🙂

I have a lot more giveaways planned. If there’s something in particular you have your eye on, let me know. (No guarantees!)

The fact of that matter is that I have been buying too many tools and too many reviewed tools are in storage. Although I often joke that there’s no such thing as too many tools, my toolbox has reached critical mass.

When I do a complete audit in a few months, some of my well-cared-for and duplicate personal tools will go up for sale. Until then, I plan to give away as many tools as I can, as gifts to readers as with this bundle.

Hey, who cares how used they are? Tools are meant to be used and show character! I have been wanting a new drill/ driver for quite a while now. I have a hard time making a decision on things. It’s easier (for me) when someone else makes the decision. Currently, I have many projects going on at my house. Better tools would likely help me get them done faster. Just because I’d be able to play with some new toys. 🙂

I started reading ToolGuyd some time back, for the honest reviews you had, as well as your previews of new tools, and deals you posted. I liked your reviews because they were a good balance of being thorough enough without being too lengthy. The tool giveaways that seem to be getting more frequent, are just the icing on the cake. I can think of several occasions where a TG review helped me decide what to get, and so far your advice has been very helpful. As a thank you, when I purchase a tool you have eviewed, or are even comparison shop and want more info, I use the links from here whenever I can.

I’m interested in this package, especially the wrenches. Those would be nice to have in my garage. The drill would go to my neighbor, her current drill is a rickety old mess and she only needs it for light duty things.

I would be interested in the magnum grip pliers.

I own a pair of sears robogrip pliers…they are my “trusties”…so to speak. Where some people don’t like them, I found a way to like them, and not just in the sentimental way, but in the productive way.

Here I share a picture of what I have done to my small robogrip pliers…(i have them ever since they came out)

    http://i.imgur.com/LEs9t8A.jpg

    In the picture;

1- I dremel front teeth…this I did it because I was working painting office bathrooms. The office bathrooms screws here are made to screw in but not screw out for security reasons. In order to paint the panels, I needed to take out some screws…this did the job easy…after I dremeled front teeth.

2- The plier normaly stay open by the handle…a simple coat hanger piece of metal did the trick to lock them close…easy to fit in the pant pockets or tool bag…

so yes, I would like to try the pliers if i’m lucky.

being a young journeyman carpenter (27) I’m still building my tool collection and really enjoy bring new tech to the job site and having the older carpenters come up to me and ask where i got something and how great of an idea something is. The way the job market is these past years if you bring something that makes work easier or faster makes you a more valuable employee. no quality tool is to small to make a difference in your everyday life as a carpenter. Merry Christmas

When Kobalt of others come up with poorly designed tools they just increase the cost of tools. (Somebody HAS to pay for those tools that don’t sell). I hate to spend good money buying a tool only to have to buy another because the first one is worthless.
