ToughBuilt Reload Utility Knife with Extra Blade Magazine

The ToughBuilt Reload utility knife remains one of the most unique models I’ve ever used, and it’s on sale at Lowe’s for just $7!

It features a blade magazine that can hold up to 5 blades in the front section for auto-loading, and 10 more in its storage slot.

The utility knife ships with 2 magazines, allowing for quick swapping of different blade styles.

Even if you don’t swap blade styles often, the Reload allows for quick and convenient automatic-style blade changes.

I found the knife to be decent, and must admit there was a fun novelty aspect when using it.

The knife is regularly priced at $19.98. At the time of this posting, Lowe’s is selling it for $6.97, reflecting a discount of around 65%.

You can opt for paid delivery or free in-store pickup.

According to Lowe’s inventory tracker, my closest store has 50 in stock. Most of the other stores in my area have an average of 45 in stock, and one has 17. That might have something to do with the hefty discount.

Sale Price: $6.97

While I didn’t have any bad experiences with my test sample, I tend to favor folding utility knives. Once the novelty wore off, I rarely found myself reaching for the ToughBuilt.

It was fun, convenient, and an overall decent utility knife.

$7 seems like a steal.

I’ve been putting together a tool kit for a first-time homeowner, and think they’ll get a kick out of this. I’m also thinking that this might make for a fun and functional Father’s Day gift.

Definitely take a look at Lowe’s user reviews for the utility knife – there are some complaints and negative experiences amid a majority of positive reviews.

There’s no indication as to when the huge discount will end.

Is it discontinued? Also how many blades does someone go through in a day to need this?

Does it have an easy way to flip blades around without loading the next blade?

It’s easy but nuanced. From my review:

Fully extend the blade, and then gently pull back on the thumb-lever. Now you can depress the blade lock lever to release the blade.

I had to navigate to their main utility knives listing and then back to the toughbuilt one for the sale price to show up for some reason. Might be worth trying if it’s not showing for you.

Some stores have it down to $4.92 as well. Seems location-dependent.

I hope ToughBuilt is doing alright. They only have 2 more days to move into compliance (June 6) after not filing particular tax forms. Otherwise, they get kicked out of the stock market and I have to assume that would not be good for finances. I say “assume” because I know nothing of how that might affect their ability to manufacture product.

Whoa. I looked into ToughBuilt’s details after reading your comment. TB has been selling common stock to pay for R&D and cover losses. Adjusted for stock splits the highest share price was $316,875 in 2019. Now it is $2.84. The stock has lost 99.999% of its value.

I have had TB sawhorses for about four years. Think they are great. I thought StackTech was going to be good. Now I wonder if TB is going to survive

From a May 24 press release on their website:

“The Company intends to submit its plan to Nasdaq no later than June 8, 2024. If Nasdaq does not accept the Company’s plan, then the Company will have the opportunity to appeal that decision to a Nasdaq Hearings Panel.

The Company is working diligently to complete its Form 10-K and Form 10-Q and will provide an update once more information is available.”

I have never purchased a stock because I’m not smart enough to understand the risks. But I do follow the stock market a bit. TBLT stock has gone through a number of reverse splits to avoid being delisted from Nasdaq.

This is a good example of why I don’t invest in stocks. My pea brain would assume TBLT would be doing well given the general quality and innovation in their product line and the apparent trajectory of their new product launches.

Several weeks ago they got a modest cash injection loan that was earmarked for materials and production for the next couple-three quarters. Not a lot of money and really not a good sign, all things considered. If they’re delisted it might not be the worst thing and could be beneficial in some ways, provided they still have some investors interested in their success.

Those previous reverse splits were notable – the last one especially was far outside the norms of reverse splits. I hope they make it, or if they fold then perhaps some of the guys can re-form into another entity and keep some of their products on the market.

And if nothing else, since their relationship with Lowe’s appears to be faltering significantly, maybe they’ll expand their offerings (and availability) on Amazon in addition to spreading into more traditional channels. They seem to be in a tough situation, though…once you reach that point of not being able to stock your products and fulfill orders, people lose faith quickly especially when there are many alternatives to choose from for most products.

I just got back from Lowe’s and noticed all the toughbuilt knives and replacment blades in the back isle. Only marked down a few bucks though, so I didn’t get anything but since they’re already in the back isle I can’t imagine they’ll be staying around. I’m pretty sure I only saw these come into the stores around the holiday time last year, that didn’t last very long. That’s a shame because the subcompact one has become my go to utility knife.

I love the Magnum here. So much so that I gifted one of these, and the Scraper, to my buddy who works at my local Comics Store. He brought the Magnum to work, and they’ve been using it almost exclusively for… I think it’s almost a year now! They open Comic packs, Shipping Tape, and Heavy Sealed Volumes, without flinching, or damaging what is inside, no matter how fast they move. And my Buddy’s Dad saw both knives and drooled over them from the start, so he got a set of his own. It’s a very, very popular knife around here!

I think my only complaint about it, is that the Magazines for the Blades have a little notch-switch so you can label the Magazines 1, 2, or 3. Which makes sense, standard and ToughBuilt blades in one, Hooked Blades in the Second, and the Third can be something like Scalloped or Serrated blades (depending on which word you use to call this type of blade.) so you always know which magazine is loaded by looking at the knife. This helps you decide if you want to swap magazines to a different type before use. Enter my complaint… It comes with 2 magazines… They don’t sell, offer, or remotely have access to, spare magazines to get that third for the knife. It isn’t an expensive knife by any means, and I suppose these sudden sales do mean one could pick up a couple spares, then end up with 2 knives with all their magazines, and one empty knife to keep as… I dunno… Backup? But it does bug me that they don’t either come with all three magazines, or offer single magazines, so that the knife can have all 3 labels going to the maximum efficiency of their use.

Considering how minor that is, I would say this is a pretty awesome knife to have around, and that I hope ToughBuilt isn’t in trouble. I am a true believer in this brand, and I sure hope the bad behaviour of Lowes isn’t going to sink this company that invested so much trust into an Exclusivity deal with them. Up here in the North, 90% of all ToughBuilt products are available outside of Lowes… I fear this situation with Lowes gaining such a horrible reputation over all this time, is going to hurt ToughBuilt in the long run, and right at the cusp of them releasing the StackTech lineup in its full force!

ToughBuilt stuff has been on clearance at Lowes for quite a while. You have to actually go in to the store to see most clearance pricing. Lots of clearance items are all gone where I’m at because they went on deep clearance (50% to 75% off), including laser levels, box levels, screwdrivers, work table, roller stands, tape measure, garden tools, and more. The clearance price on other things has gone down slowly and are still available, including hammers, many razors and scrapers, and various saws.

The ToughBuilt tape measure I bought on clearance for about $10 is probably my favorite I’ve owned. Very nice stuff IMO, but all the clearance suggests that it doesn’t seem to sell well. Maybe just too expensive at full price. For example, ToughBuilt has a 20-oz framing hammer for $45 that is made in China. A similar model by Kobalt is $25. Made in USA framing hammers from Vaughan and Estwing range from $29 – $35. Why would someone pay so much more for ToughBuilt?

I have the scraper/knife model and it was a boon to getting pine sap off a door that after 50 years is still leaking pine sap. Its a neat gimmick but I can see that 1) its much heavier than my other utility knives, 2) there is no storage so you need the 5 blade pack included somewhere, 3) not cheap as I can get a utility knife and paint tool/scraper for same price or less.
I wonder if they will get bought out?

I’ve seen all these toughbuilt products either lack stock in stores or clearance them out. A year ish later I can’t get the electrician 5 in 1 utility knife basically wiped from there catalog. They definitely going downhill and this is why I buy packout and not systems that won’t be around in a couple years.

There are two versions of one particular knife – with and without blade storage. If you were looking for one, try to find the other. I think one replaced the other, or one was seasonal.

Just shy of ebay I can’t find one to buy on lowes Amazon or toughbuilt website I guess I didn’t need one that bad. It was only one I didn’t try/buy I guess it’s klein or fastback with screwdriver models for now.

It looked for a while like ToughBuilt was going to be Lowes mid-to-premium house brand for storage and organization. Their modular tool organizers looked to have some rare genuine innovations in the space. Plus, their ClipTech holsters/pouches/belts etc looked pretty cool, too, with the added bonus of being able to integrate with the box system. I was strongly considering switching for a while. Lowes was loaded with the stuff…until they weren’t.

I wonder how much of the problem is Lowes and how much is them delivering the goods? Lowes seems to be an unstable retail partner at best. They don’t know how to market stuff. They don’t know how to organize a website and make stuff easy to find. They don’t seem to be very patient about giving a product line time to hit big before cancelling it (though they hung in there a pretty long time with Flex). On the other hand, ToughBuilt’s “Available in 2024” product listing features a lot of products. We’re approaching the halfway point of 2024–how much of it is available yet?

On the third hand: ToughBuilt’s product catalog (present and future) has a lot–A LOT–of different products, and there was no realistic way a store the size of even Lowes would be able to stock more than a fraction of it in-store. But ToughBuilt’s “Buy Now” but ton redirects directly to Lowes.com. I wonder if they would be better served expanding to other retailers like True Value or Ace with their best sellers and bringing the rest of their sales and fulfillment in-house?

On the fourth hand: The ToughBuilt website is weird. The required privacy notice and terms&conditions pages are there, but that’s pretty much it beyond the marketing pages. No “About Us”, not “FAQ”, no “Contact Us”… None of that. They offer a lifetime warranty, but there’s no info about it on the site. The whole thing is weird.

    Who actually owns ToughBuilt?

I was really impressed with ToughBuilt Stacktech. I’ve bought a number of pieces. But I am really looking forward to the next wave of releases in the product line, especially the “Transporter.

A couple years ago Menards put clearance prices on all of their ToughBuilt pouches & tool belts. I live in California but grew up in Chicago. I still have family there. I attempted to have the sale items shipped to California but Menards wouldn’t. So I had it shipped to a family member in Illinois and picked up the items when visiting.

I was concerned at Menards clearing out ToughBuilt. But Lowes carried it here. So I chalked it up to a decision by Menards to drop the brand.

Seeing ToughBuilt clearance items now at Lowes make me concerned the ToughBuilt StackTech may be DOA.

I really hope they hang in there & deliver on StachTech.
