ToughBuilt StackTech Modular Tool Storage System

ToughBuilt StackTech is a new modular tool storage system, and it’s unlike any other that you might have seen before.

ToughBuilt describes their StackTech tool box and storage system as being the world’s most intuitive, and that it will offer unrivaled functionality through its effortless stacking, extensive product range, exceptional durability, and a groundbreaking transportation system that sets a new standard in the industry.

The first products will launch in October 2023, with major product expansions aimed for Spring and Summer 2024.

ToughBuilt gave me the go-ahead to share with you everything they showed me, as long as I make it clear what’s coming out and when. So, we’ll start with that, and then get to the features and examples of how everything comes together.

ToughBuilt StackTech Launch – October 2023

Here are the first (8) StackTech products, which will be available starting later this month at Lowe’s stores and online:

  • Tool Box
  • Large Tool Box
  • Rolling Tool Box
  • Compact Tool Box
  • Organizer Tool Box
  • Compact Low Profile Organizer
  • Tote
  • Crate

Before you think “that’s it?” know that this is the start. Everything you see below is expected to available by this time next year.

ToughBuilt StackTech Spring 2024 Expansion

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Spring 2024 Products

Shown here are all of the StackTech products that ToughBuilt expects to launch by Spring 2024. Yes, that’s a lot.

As I understand it, all of these products should be available by next June.

There’s going to be tool boxes, drawers, organizers, compact tool boxes and organizers, accessories, mounting and transport accessories, tool bags, and more.

The Transporter series will feature a 4-wheel cart, a cargo carrier, a hand truck, and also a convertible hand truck.

How many of these tool boxes, bags, and accessories do you wish other modular tool box makers offered?

ToughBuilt StackTech Summer 2024 Expansion

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Box System Summer 2024 First Look

ToughBuilt also provided a preview of what they plan to launch in Summer 2024.

Yes; at the very top, that does say “rolling drawer box.” To all of the many tool users who said “I want a drawer on the bottom, with wheels!”, ToughBuilt heard you loud and clear.

Here we can see more drawer units, compact tool boxes, two sizes of first aid kits, a water cooler, and powered solutions – a StackTech tower light, box fan, and vacuum.

ToughBuilt StackTech 2024 Accessories

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage Accessories Expansion 2024

Quite a few accessories are coming out as well.

These will all attach to the outside of ToughBuilt StackTech tool boxes.

There’s a compact area light, MOLLE plates, a magnifying lens, tablet arm, drafting light, roll holder, cord wrap, a hand tool bar, magnetic bar, long handle tool bars, and hubs for clipping on pouches and the like.

ToughBuilt ClipTech Tool Pouches

ToughBuilt ClipTech Tool Pouches and Accessories Line

ToughBuilt has a wide range of ClipTech tool pouches and accessories, all of which can attach to mounting points on users’ tool belts, tool bags, portable workbenches, and now StackTech tool boxes.

As shown in the previous image, StackTech hubs and bars will be available in 2024.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage Features

ToughBuilt StackTech Reinforced Corners and Accessory Dock

Each StackTech tool box has an accessory attachment plate at the corner.

I like this idea. If you don’t want to attach anything, just treat the plates as added impact protection that doesn’t take up any extra space.

The boxes are IP65-rated against water and dust.

ToughBuilt StackTech Locking System

I’m intrigued about how everything locks into place. Slide the latch to the left to lock a tool box to a stack, and to the right to unlock it.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Box Stacking and Latches

The stacking seems uncomplicated.

I’m also intrigued about the single latch lid closure.

ToughBuilt StackTech Storage System Integrations

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Product Family Teaser

This is how everything comes together.

Do you prefer a rolling tool box? Convertible platform? Dolly? A system that just slides out of the back of your truck? ToughBuilt’s got it all.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Boxes on Transporter Convertible Hand Cart

The convertible platform hand truck is what really got my attention at first.

Set it up with drawers, and you can move everything around without having to take a box off.

Do you need a large drawer? The XL tool box size will be available with 1, 2, 3, or 4 drawers, plus a traditional XL tool box with hinged top lid.

There will be 1-drawer tool boxes in medium, large, and XL heights.

ToughBuilt StackTech Drawer Tool Boxes and Roller Dolly

The mountable accessories can be attached or moved around tool-free.

The roll holder can be used for small wire spools, and the long handle holder for a conduit bender. It looks like there are solutions for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, contractors, and everyone in between.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Box Combo with Long Handle Tools

Mount the long handle tool bar attachment to the side of a tool box combo, and you can bring along tools like a sledge hammer and shovel.

Maybe you don’t want to bring a shovel with you, but what about a push broom? Painting roller extension pole?

ToughBuilt StackTech with Pickup Truck Transporter

With the Transporter, it looks like you can load or unload your kit from a pickup truck without having to break it down.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Box Truck Cargo Carrier

If the Transporter isn’t for you, what about a hitch-mounted cargo carrier?

ToughBuilt StackTech Transporter Adjustable Height

The Transporter is height-adjustable.

ToughBuilt StackTech Transporter with Tool Platform Accessories

Do you need a work platform? The StackTech Transporter can do that too.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Mobile Van and Truck Setups

ToughBuilt also designed a system for mounting StackTech tool boxes and accessories in your work van, and it looks highly space-efficient too.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Workshop Examples

Do you want workshop storage? StackTech can go there too. There will be shelves, wall cabinets, a workbench, slotted back panels, and more.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Mobile Mounted Example

Here’s another look at a mobile storage setup. There are drawers on the bottom, removable tool boxes in the middle, and work surface panels on top, plus tool holders and a power tool rack.

Thoughts?

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System with Accessories

A lot of brands have stacking tool boxes, drawers, and externally-mounted accessories and attachments.

But this? This is just… wow.

Someone asked me last night, via social media, whether the ToughBuilt StackTech system is going to have drawers. They saw the SKUs for the first wave of products, and was surprised not to see any drawer units included.

Over the next 12 months, we can expect to see 7 different drawer tool boxes.

Yes, 7 drawer tool boxes – single drawer tool boxes in medium, large, XL, and rolling XL sizes, and XL drawers also in 2, 3, and 4 drawer configurations.

There will be 2 rolling tool boxes, compact and full-width organizers, compact and full-width crates, tool boxes, compact tool boxes, first aid kits, a work surface, attachments, and so much more.

For mobility, there will be the rolling tool boxes, a hand cart, convertible hand cart, 4-wheel dolly, and the Transporter system that can double as a work surface.

Other modular tool storage brands have coolers. ToughBuilt’s has a water cooler. And a cargo carrier. I mention the cargo carrier, because that seems like the perfect place for the water cooler at a jobsite.

Looking at everything ToughBuilt will be introducing over the next 12 months, it’s as if they asked every single modular tool storage user – and every potential user – what they wanted from a system.

As mentioned at the start of the post, ToughBuilt claims that StackTech will offer unrivaled functionality and set a new industry standard.

Do you agree with this? From what I’ve seen so far, I certainly do.

As a painter I’m looking forward to the box fan and long handle tool holders for painter poles. For my van, I’m going to get the convertible dolly. I just built shelves to switch from tstak to packout, but I’m going to hold out for this system, I love my tough built tool belt pouches and clips. I’m so stoked, I hope the lock mechanism is solid ASF.

I don’t see a way to lock the drawers. It’s not to stop genuine theives. It’s to stop the entitled people on a jobsite that think they can just go and use your tools. Or they think they are company tools anyway so they are entitled to use them because they work for the same contractor as you. Or they think they can get away with stealing just one tool out of your box and get away with it. Which they likely will.

If I can’t lock the drawers to prevent tampering. I don’t think I will be able to buy these as fantastic as they are in so many other ways.

Looks fantastic for consumers, but I have no idea how long this is going to stick around. Usually offering lots of different SKUs increases operating costs significantly and I have a hard time believing Milwaukee or DeWalt wouldn’t offer all these options if they thought it would be profitable.

I hope they do succeed, personally I haven’t invested in any of these systems because every one has massive flaws in my eyes. These, potentially, by way of being late to the party, have a chance to alleviate Apple-style the shortcomings of the earlier offerings.

I’m curious on this one myself. If they didn’t come out with their own portable power source I’d be very surprised. Looking at the product line as a whole they really have taken the crown from Milwaukees Packout and set the bar significantly higher in every aspect possible in my opinion. To do all that and drop the ball by not making the electrical products portable would really hurt the success of the product line. Also, this is just their first waves, can you imagine the potential growth thst we could see over the next few years!!!?!!! The possibilities really are endless with today’s technology. I also think that the delay in rolling what we’ve seen out has to do with the creation, manufacturing/production of the power source because if it were just producing from the materials we’ve seen then I’d say there would be no problem for them to have everything out by early spring 2024. Batteries are much more time consuming to bring to market, especially being their first experience with them.

I don’t use modular tools storage because I am a simple DIY kind of guy and already have reasonable tool storage on my garage (and no space for anything like this). But it looks like they took all (most of) the good things from packout and then made it even better, listened to what everyone was begging Milwaukee for and gave it to them.

Seeing this makes me want to think about getting some modular tools storage anyways (even though I probably don’t really need it). And I like that the color is neutral, not in your face screaming “I have a ton of expensive Milwaukee or DeWalt tools here, come and take it from me”

It will be interesting to see how their prices compare.

Stuart , can we assume that this is the game changer modular tool storage system you mentioned in a post a few days ago?

Yeah, you weren’t wrong Stuart. This is a pretty complete lineup, and having a timeline for the range helps their case. I’ve been impressed with most everything I’ve seen from ToughBuilt so far. Have no doubt there may be some teething problems, there’s a lot to put together, but it looks really promising. I really like the range of drawers, for sure. Finally a place to put a nailgun and circ saw without y stacking everything!

Looks good. I just wish they had a “drop front” like the Flex Stack Pack Cabinet (FS1107).
The van mounting options is great. Too bad it will 6 to 9 months before many of the components are available.
Also, since I do some work on trail structures, lean-tos, I wish there was a backpack straps version of “tool bags.” The regular backpacks are not quite big enough for a couple of the larger volume cordless tools – circular saw, reciprocating saw.
I really like my C700 SAWHORSE / JOBSITE TABLE.

Trail work! I do that too, and FWIW I built an chainsaw-and-other-tool carrier out of a surplus backpack frame and a chunk of scrap lauan. I used 3M casting tape to mold ‘pockets’ for the saw and other tools to slide into. Sort of like a Kydex holster, but made of fiberglass tape. It keeps everything fixed in place so I can bike in without things flopping around on me.

Very tempting, esp. the StackTech Transporter — if it will fit my Shapeoko 3 XL (and the chunk of quartz countertop I picked up off the side of the road to put under it) and move all that around, and store it vertically when not in use, I’m in, at least for that. Not sure if it offers enough of a synergy to replace the current plan of getting a Tanos MW 1000 Mobile Worksurface and going all in on Systainers.

I dont think it’s ever a bad tin of going with tanos/systainers. they always make them backwards compatible and you dont have to worry about it being phased out next year.

the Europeans have it figured out when it comes to standardized storage. I use all Ikea samla clear storage bins for the house/garage and systainers for the shop. Started about 15 years ago with the systainer classics and maybe 12 years ago on the Ikea when it opened here in Colorado

There are downsizes to Systainers, namely their smaller size, high price, and lower durability. I won’t give mine up, but I also use them very differently from other modular system products.

Ikea Samla boxes are inexpensive, but also flimsy. They’re good for light-duty long-term storage in my opinion. I’m much more a fan of Sterilite and have been pleased with my recent purchase of HDX clear storage bins.

I just started investing in TSTAK, and now I’m having heart palpatations, seeing ToughBuilt show up with this Mic-Drop level of detail. Absolutely blown away by the amount of product showcased. I would say if it was the initial stack offerings I don’t know if it would be a massively successful launch. Other companies showcase stuff as it becomes available. But with Toughbuilts ambition and showcasing all of this stuff for a near future release I believe more people are going to be buying into the system.

I will definitely be checking this stuff out as this is what Dewalt should’ve been doing with the Tstak and toughsystem.

Tstak is the right size for me and I’m hoping this stuff is a bit smaller than the toughsystem stuff but time will tell.

This certainly feels different than any other modular storage brand. It’s definitely not “lets just dip our toes in the water” like countless new entries into this category have been.

It’s so big that it might become the thing the brand is best known for.

Their stock is tanking and the rollout of this system is in pieces. No guarantees this will all come out, anyone who has worked on product roadmaps knows they change quickly. But they don’t really have an option if they want people to buy into a brand new system with only a few SKUs. Now Milwaukee, DeWALT, Flex, etc. will all have plenty of time to design and release their own of anything on this roadmap. Seems more like a desperation move, tbh…

        lol.

        https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/introducing-raspberry-pi-5/

“Bringing Raspberry Pi 5 to life has been a seven-year, $25 million endeavour, involving tens of organisations and hundreds of individuals.”

stock valuation is not a barometer of a sustainable company. it’s a barometer for a profitable investment. those are very different end-goals. many investors are also really only in it for short terms under 1-2 years.

as quoted above, a tiny ‘simple’ $60 computer module has cost a company 7 years and $25million to bring to market. this sorage system is custom-designed, with custom tooling. i would not doubt for a second that toughbuilt has been working on this for at least as long, for at least as much money.

my point is, release of the line now is only the work of many years finally coming to light. it’s nearly impossible to spin up tool, production, and legal investigations in a matter of a year or two.

more than likely, what you see as floundering on an investment side, was them working behind the scenes on products like this for many years. it’s not like tooling, design, engineering, facility re-tooling, or product placement can happen overnight.

it’s just ironic to me to have such a piss poor gut reaction to a huge announcement that “it’s a move of desperation”, when everything they announce doesn’t copy or re-use any existing storage architecture that would imply slapping a sticker on pre-existing tooling/molds…

While you are generally correct, you are missing the point of WHY their stock is in the toilet. They spend WAY more than they make, their products are good deals because their margins are poor, and the amount of pure capital it takes to invest in a launch at this scale is enormous. Probably on the order of 10s of millions of dollars in upfront cost just to start manufacturing, not counting any development or design costs.! So for a company that has yet to turn a profit, it’s not a good sign to announce practically doubling their company product offering. If the first round of products doesn’t take off, the rest gets shelved very quickly because there is no way they have designed and started production on even a majority of this line. All the images except the things you have seen people hold are just renders and these days AI can pump those out in minutes, designers in days. If a company like TTI or Stanley doesn’t put out lines at this scale, what makes anyone think Toughbuilt has any way to? They have a tiny fraction of the resources and cash flow (and theirs is negative lol!) so I don’t see any reason to assume somehow this product launch will be different.

And releasing an entire roadmap to the public for products that are still a year out, yeah, it’s kinda desperate. Not necessary a huge negative but they’re either afraid of people not buying in to a fresh system without a breadth of product or trying to keep hype up for the brand. Also, for a company that just started sizing up in the last few years (and now downsizing again) there is no way they have been working on this for 7 years with the other products they’ve released. This is all public information if you follow their stock and so while they are putting a lot of nicely designed products, they are bleeding money and that won’t stop unless they take huge portions of the cost out, raise prices, or just go under.

I love how clean it looks. Smooth edges. No bulging plastic all over the place like every other system. With the boxes stacked, its got a very Systainer feel, but with all the functionality, size and features of Packout. Especially the accessory plates on each box. If this is cheaper and as good quality as Packout, its a win for Toughbuilt.

I’m interested in the diamensiobs too.

Tstak are way too small, Packout interior drawer width isn’t wide enough. Dewalt tough system boxes aren’t big enough to put a circ saw front to back.

I’d actually prefer if these storage systems were a tad bigger than than all the others out there so far.

Found a video of a box from Lowe’s already. The interior measures 18.5” side to side.

For me that’s not wide enough. I was hoping for around 24” outside width.

And based on the sound of the latching and moving the box around, it seemed to be a thinner basic kind of plastic rather than the dense heavy duty plastics of the tough system or Packout boxes.

Unfortunately I’m thinking this may be a cheaper feeling box, but I really hope not.

Good question, I’ll add it to my list. As long as there are seals around the drawer openings, they could close water-tight. I’m told the drawers will have active retention so that they won’t open unintentionally.

I’ll admit I was pretty skeptical when I saw the “wait and see” post. Even starting with the first 1/4 of product launches I was like okay cool another Packout clone with some improvements like Flex did. Than it just. Kept. Coming. Holy cow.

Now I’m like “okay I don’t have THAT much Packout and the resale value is pretty good”. I like many others are sick of the bright red and would love to have seen the European black here. At this point I’m sure Milwaukee can always pull that lever to get more sales of the same product but man. Depending on pricing and launches getting pushed back I definitely see myself buying into this, especially if there’s some launch bundle promos. Still a bit more yellow than I’d love to see but whatever.

Dewalt is probably more worried than Milwaukee, but if I’m Milwaukee I’m announcing a bunch of whatever they have planned on the next couple years as well as special edition black boxes like the tumblers as defense because this is the first real threat I’ve seen.

The boxes are black instead of screaming for attention red. Love the wheeled flat cart. Love the 1 2 3 4 drawer units. Love the raised platform. Love the Vehicle and Home Racking.

This ticks a ton of boxes!

If it is not cost prohibitive and made comparably strong / durable in the direction of Ridgid & Packout boxes … this could be real a game changer and make people change allegiances away from Packout. I love my upgraded organizers, and my two main tool boxes; probably would never part with those … but for the rest Milwaukee is too pricey and not quite adaptive and versatile enough for my liking.

ToughBuilt appears to have done this right. They deserve a lot of credit for listening to users and offering what they want.

I am blown away by four very different ways to move boxes. Workshop smooth floor dolly up to a hand truck which goes into more places than a wheeled box.

Drawers and drawers. Corner attachment for accessories. Van systems, workshop systems.

And smart marketing on top of good design. They want everything announced now – anyone who can wait will want to touch this stuff before buying another brand with less variety. How does Milwaukee respond? Dewalt?

Stuart, you nailed it in your first post. Game changer. Just need to see how robust the designs are and pricing.

Very impressive depth of product. I’m not very familiar with the brand so a quick Google search shows they are basically a design R&D firm that subcontract all the products. Interesting concept. Focus on your core competencies and outsource what you need.

They certainly look to be focused on industrial users however I don’t know how strong they are until I get my hands on them. Looks to be a very thoughtful and purposeful design with the added benefit of they are late to a saturated market so get to pick the best of existing design ideas.

From what I can tell (I may be off base) tough built is a value oriented brand? Not cheap stuff but middle of the pack pricing I guess. If that pricing model holds up with an innovative product line like this I think this is going to be a home run. They might even be able to go up market. Maybe not Milwaukee pricing levels but somewhere close to it.

Certainly has me reevaluating my Dewalt tough system cases.

i would say the brand is more ‘toyota’ in most qualities.

they tend to show up late after all the big players blew their wads on ‘new and innovative’, take the root innovation, and apply it in a more reliable methodology, for a fair sales price.

i have many of their tool pouches, and feel they’re all better designed for the task than other brands, while still maintaining a similar price point.

i tend to watch them specifically for the late-commer-innovation they offer. i haven’t regretted buying any of their products.

The brand as a whole I think can be considered a very good one. Generally they have upped the quality and/or features on many items they sell compared to the competition while keeping reasonable or similar pricing. Just depends on the product/category. Most things would be considered home game or light and disposable professional use but they have some gems. Their market penetration and product availability has been pretty poor over the last several years, though, which gives me some pause in considering any of these boxes and such (i.e. will the products be available or discontinued, will the company still be here…there are some reasons to be cautious there, imho).

Not a plastic engineered box, but their tool bags are exceptionally well made, a big notch up over the poor bag on the market these days (better than the DeWalt ones and older Makita/Milwaukee (both have dropped in quality), and not the price level of leather Occidental or Veto. The bags could easily satisfy industrial users who use them all the time and treat them roughly. (Cannot really say that about their tool belt pouches, however.) If they put that level of quality and thought into the modular box systems then they should be excellent. Even if they were only older T-Stak quality that would still be ok for many people, and many more options to build a setup.

Toughbuilt’s marketing is pretty fluffy (sounds like it with these items, too), so for me it’ll be a purchase only after hands-on or maybe some really good review videos.

I understand the need for a national retail B&M partner. But Lowe’s – ouch. So now they’re going to be selling Flex, Craftsman, Klein, Kobalt and this? There is not enough floorspace to give half those systems their due! Someone is going to have to lose out, by a lot…

      Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0

And have a full range of October roll out samples at the entrance to the store. Instead of all the BBQ, or Christmas or Valentines Day seasonal stuff you hardly glance at.

Milwaukee announced their Packout system 6-1/2 years ago, and the first products launched around 6 years ago, at the start of the 2017 holiday season.

Ridid’s Pro Gear system launched 9 years ago.

Dewalt announced their Tstak system 11-1/2 years ago.

Dewalt announced ToughSystem 12-1/2 years ago.

Bosch announced their Sortimo-made L-Boxxes 13-1/2 years ago.

Festool’s Systainer system has been around for far longer.

I’ve lost count as to how many different new systems launched in the past 5 years.

Consider that there are three types of users right now:

      A) users who bought into a system and have no plans of switching
      B) users open to switching brands
      C) users who want to buy storage products (whether part of a system or not)

Perhaps it’s not very common, but users do switch brands and systems, similar to what happens in the cordless power tool industry. This happens in a lot of industries. Photographers and videographers switch on occasion, with professional camera bodies and lenses costing many thousands of dollars.

But ignoring users who are happy with their current storage system and those who might switch, the market for new sales is still huge.

Why do tool brand still aggressively market cordless power tool combo kits or gateway offerings such as drill or impact driver kits?

What about mechanics tools? When Milwaukee entered the market a few years ago, how many tool users who needed wrenches and sockets didn’t already have such tools? Milwaukee built a factory to produce USA-made screwdrivers and pliers. Aren’t those already crowded markets?

Other brands have had head starts – absolutely. But that doesn’t mean ToughBuilt and other brands don’t stand a chance at winning over new users.

Milwaukee’s Packout system launched years after other brands’, and look at them today. What will the landscape look like 5 years from now?

Milwaukee entered the mechanics hand tool market less than 7 years ago with just two 12 pc 3/8″ sets, one SAE and one metric. Look at what they offer today.

Flex launched a new line of cordless power tools 2-1/2 years ago.

Is the storage market a little crowded these days? Yes. Is it saturated? I don’t think so. I believe there are plenty of opportunities for even newcomers to any particular tool industry segment to gain market share. It’s just a matter of winning over new customers and continuing to do so over time.

I imagine there’s always room in a market for an entrant with something new to offer. This is a very comprehensive system with some unique offerings.

Even when there exists a competitor with a similar product (say the paper towel holder add-on), I don’t think there are any modular tool storage options with this breadth.

I’m an existing Toughsystem user – yet I could see expanding my use of modular tool boxes because of how versatile this new Toughbuilt launch appears to be.

Wow! I’ll look at these when they come out.

I am a little hesitant about the single latch that locks all the boxes together. It’s nice that the lever or switch is designed to indicate clearly whether the boxes are locked together. But it looks like there are four catches under each box, and for the one lever to move all of them, there has to be some system of rods and levers inside the box, kind of like the door of a safe with multiple bolts. I’d worry that the mechanism would loosen or get clogged with dirt over time, and stop working. For that kind of thing, I like the mechanism to be dead simple.

Right … the issue is when you unstack somewhere, get dirt and grime on the base, may get dust and crud on top, … which is why I have loved the old school simplicity of Ridgid systems, with solid lids and beefy metal latches. Packout is simple enough too, but in dusty environments or with some errant piece here or there, it is possible to wedge lock two units. And I’m always weary of people wanting to move unstacked packouts by shoving them around on the floor, pavement, … can’t be good for the base feet, and damage may transfer to other lids.

I abuse the heck out of my Packout stuff, in particular the crates. We have 30+ crates for random big stuff, large plumbing fittings, etc, and I slide them around and kick them around and throw them around. I have yet to see a piece not click in or otherwise be damaged after about 3 years.

Prior to that we had L-Boxxes and the plastic is so brittle, and the latches gum up, and…….

I do keep a few open L-Boxxes (don’t remember the model, but they have no lid) around as my job prep jobs as parts arrive. They’re great because if the top handle which makes toting them around much easier than the Packout crates.

But if the job is big, everything gets transferred to a crate before the job so that they can sit on the rolling stack.

I have been using several models of their clip-tech pouches for around 10 years and have an few other tings like bags and such from them. They have really nailed their previous their previous tool storage and transport products. From the look of this that have a really good handle on what the market wants in modular tool storage products.

I am a little disappointing that attachment points for their existing clip-tech system seem like an afterthought. The ease of attaching accessories to the outside corners of the large units definitely seems better that what Packout offers. But the main option for hanging any clip-tech pouches appears to be just a bar with standard clip-tech belt clips on it is underwhelming. Seamless integration of honestly one of the best modular tool belt systems and what looks to be a otherwise really well planned modular tool storage system would have been amazing.

What I do really like and hope Milwaukee eventually adds to their product line is more half width storage options. The half width crate, half width half height tool box and water cooler are all really great ideas. Giant case and boxes are great but many times I want to organize and kit my tools an accessories so I can grab only what I need for a task rather than drag in my whole stack. More half width options makes it easier to use the right side box for the task.

I really hope that they can bring all of this to market. While I may be solidly in team red at the current moment, Having a few more solid competitors with innovative ideas never hurts.

Quite the debut! Showing all of their cards so early makes me think ToughBuilt is well on their way to delivering what and when promised. Finger crossed, because the system looks incredibly well considered. Thanks for keeping on top of this Stuart.

This YouTube short (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HdY1XFHrogU) shows more of the locking mechanism. I like the autolock, and hope the slider area is easy to keep clean. That the cart handle is removable means this might fit upright under the tonneau covers many of our pickups have. I have 19″ of clearance, and neither the ToughSystem DS450 Mobile Storage roller nor the Festool MW 1000 Mobile Workshop fit.

I use these storage systems for non-tool stuff, too. When coaching lacrosse to save my back I use a ToughSystem DS Carrier and load it up with a large case for the heavy ball bag, Deep Compact Organizers for a first aid kit and a tool kit, a Mobile Storage Clipboard for my coach’s stuff, and then I throw the goalie gear bag on top of it. On extra hot days I add a ToughSystem Cooler to the stack. (I bought all this gear using a buddy’s “Friends & Family” employee discount code that saved me ~75% off of retail.) I don’t think I’ll replace this stack with ToughBuilt, but I love the Compact First Aid Kit, Compact Water Cooler, and Box Fan. A Compact Radio would be a welcome addition!

A lot of my tool and shop storage is made up of Systainers, with the ToughSystem cases used primarily for stuff I throw in the truck, so I have no problem using different platforms for different needs. I hope this ToughBuilt system is priced to make it enticing to add or even switch!

This is truly unbelievable. I think I was starting to get “modular storage” fatigue and feel like brands were too late to the game. They conducted some serious market research to launch such a comprehensive system. For someone not yet invested in a platform- this seems awesome.

I started thinking that some of these elements could come together nicely for a small shop setup before scrolling to the actual shop storage 😂. I use my tools for DIY projects and don’t really have a need for this type of system. But I would love some of these storage items and you could put together a really flexible and efficient mobile storage system.

This is going to be huge. So far everything I’ve purchased from Toughbuilt has felt like a solid pick. I’m especially excited for the van loadout options. I have a few packout drawers and boxes in the work truck right now but I was missing something more dedicated. Huge move for Toughbuilt.

This stuff looks fantastic. I can’t wait to see the pricing.

I can see it immensely popular with the ‘all our stuff has to be black’ crowd -film/tv workers, stagehands, etc.

Too bad it has toughbuilt plastered all over it. One thing if you had a big stack and it had one logo, but when each piece has a huge name on it, makes it look cheap. I suppose it could be fixed with black adhesive vinyl. The group I mentioned above would happily pay $20/pc more for an all blacked out version with no printing on it.

Gaffer’s tape…cures all the world’s sins, in fact makes the world go ’round, and it’s cheap.

Another comment above mentioned this market, too…one I haven’t thought of. If they’re reasonably as durable as the $$ Pelican cases and similar, Toughbuilt could really make a mint here.

Be nice to see some new foam options on the market, too…a denser pick and pluck would be fantastic.

Why is this dead on the Dewalt Side? I once thought that Dewalt was cutting edge and they were 2nd to none. They may be the case in the 90’s & early 2000’s but have they stopped innovating? The Tough System are just crates that serves nothing more, while Milwaukie & ToughBuilt has continued to evolve the Tool Storage Genre. I am seeing some great technology with the Transporter & Hitch . . . Great stuff indeed

I was worried the teased upcoming system would be another lukewarm addition to the space, but wow, this delivered on the hype and then some.

Not only does the industrial design actually look great, but it’s black(!) and the small logos look easy to cover over for those who don’t like advertising brands to the world.

The worst part about this is having to wait until realistically Q3/Q4 2024 for the full lineup to become available. The one thing that might make me give up on waiting is if Milwaukee released their European black packout range in the US.

The sheer variety and creativity of this system is an immensely strong selling point. It shows dedication from the company. If the prices are reasonable, and they are easy to find at hd/lowes, then we have a strong contender.

Just seen a couple of these in store. $64.98 for both the compact deep toolbox and the regular sized suitcase. So basically same price as Packout. The suitcase felt heavy in comparison to the Packout of the same size and Packouts aren’t light..

I have to admit it’s an impressive launch but with possible caveats. A few short questions need answering.
1: What warranties are in place?
2: What load capacity compared to steel storage especially systems with drawers.
3: What type of hinge system (bearings ECT) for drawers?
4: Any UV and possible dry rot issues overtime?
5: Security, Security, Security. This is a tough one but must be addressed. Worksite applications need some working form of theft redundancy. How has this been addressed if at all?
6: Are these systems warranted for military service contracts?

I like having multiple industry options so it’s great to see companies stepping up. I wish all the great success and will be following closely.

Can you help us understand Toughbuilt’s distribution potential?
I know that I can reliably find Toughbuilt at Lowes and Menards (and, back in the day, sears), but I seem to recall also seeing Toughbuilt in smaller/local hardware stores.
This seems like it would be an advantage, over say Ridgid or Flex, who are limited to a single national retailer.
But I also know that Dewalt and Milwaukee sell from specialty trade suppliers, parts houses, etc…
Do you anticipate that Toughbuilt will be unique in its ability to compete across multiple [types of] stores and suppliers in ways that other brands aren’t??

This stuff looks incredible! One huge flaw that every modular company is overlooking is how to lock all the boxes together so they can’t be stolen individually, lifted off the base separately or eliminating the need for 15 padlocks to seal every lid. I currently am using the Packout system and it drives me crazy that they still haven’t found a solution yet.

Individuals or smaller teams will usually load everything back into a truck or van at the end of the day, and larger commercial teams might have a JobBox or similar on-site.

In theory, you can use a security cable through the handles as a deterrent. The reality is that if a thief wants your gear, they’ll find a way to get it. Security measures are usually most effective at deterring opportunistic thieves.

Looks great! It’s all about the drawers and dollies for me. Love that the coloring/branding isn’t overly obnoxious.

I just hope the insides of the drawers don’t have excessive ribbing – that’s a pet peeve of mine with many of the current offerings. Robs you of internal space and makes it more difficult to make custom dividers/inserts.

That’s quite a lineup and some very innovative items mixed in. Thanks for getting the scoop and sharing it with us, Stuart!

Can you share COO and maybe what plastic(s) are used?

Any pics or info on divider options for the drawers? One of my peeves has been that I have to make my own because nobody’s options seem to accommodate holding 5″ grinding wheels/discs/brushes. A 4″ or 5″ deep tray with at least six 5″ compartments would be great…nine even better.

I’ll wait to see these in person, or maybe some good video reviews and feedback, but several things look like they’re worth the switch. The bottom drawer cart…big win. I don’t know about that hitch tray – surely they did not underestimate the amount of steel that can end up in boxes, so hopefully the tray is stout enough to handle driving with that sway and leverage (of course hitch size and class will still need to be heeded).

Picked up a couple of those small OXO cups, by the way….thanks for that. Stouter than I expected it to be and some small design aspects that are pretty smart! Wish they made some smaller 2oz size.

My first 2 test samples (small and large tool boxes) arrived today. According to the labels, they’re made in China.

I’m not certain of the plastics, but everything feels rigid. The latching method is very clever.

I was also impressed with the packaging.

ToughBuilt packaged both boxes in a double-thick corrugated box with added carboard sheets on the top and bottom. They arrived in pristine condition. It’s rare for a tool box I receive via shipping to *not* be cosmetically damaged in some way. Brand new tool boxes shouldn’t arrive with scrapes and gouges due to insufficient packaging. ToughBuilt put a lot of thought into this. And, there was no noxious outgassing smell, at least not that I noticed.

This is my biggest concern. I own several of their products and really like them and I want to like these too but the company seems very mismanaged. That wouldn’t stop me from purchasing more of their products like saw horses but would be hard to invest into a modular system that could be discontinued early on before most of the product selection is produced because the company goes belly up.

I was doing a little reading after seeing the comments here – I knew they weren’t doing great (for awhile now) but I didn’t realize how bad it was. I’m surprised they haven’t been delisted yet. I think more than the current stock level, they are probably more concerned about investors. Good gosh they sure hosed a LOT of people with two high ratio reverse splits combined with horrific capital management. Apparently they have been way, way overspending for years now and the times of higher revenue haven’t been enough to justify or offset that. Geez.

They’re probably sweating bullets on this introduction of the packout system and banking on it being a huge quick success.

All this said, and assuming they could manage their affairs better, if they are delisted and/or go private, sometimes that really benefits companies (look at Dell, for instance).

Sure looks like a mess, though, worse than I thought.

This is a very nice debut by toughbuilt. I was looking for the a journeyman bag about 2 years ago and stumbled upon toughbuilt. they had a hard shelled version and were phasing it out with a soft shelled one. idk why they would do that, but i quickly grabbed the old version. i love that bag. i added packout cleats to it.

Researching toughbuilt a little more at the time, my feeling was they have great innovation, but they are terrible at running the business. This makes me hesitant, no matter how nice it looks.

Additionally, its nice that they are showing us what will be in a 6-8 months from now earliest, but like many have said, who knows what will be between now and then. Who knows what competitors will bring out and which new brands will enter the ring.

Regardless of what system you are using now, people always need new pieces and i am not halting my purchases and waiting for a product to debut on time. especially if the company has a track record of running poorly.

Finally, toughbuilt isnt sold as broadly as competitors. This makes the price less competitive. Packout is very expensive for a toolbox. most of my packout stuff i purchased when deals came around. In fact, I am waiting for the holiday season to get more drawers. I rarely shop in store, and Lowes online experience is far less enjoyable than other stores i shop at. I think this severly limits toughbuilt.

looking forward to see what the future has in store

I always wonder why manufacturers design converterable 2 in 1 hand trucks with back/ bottom (rear) all-terrain wheels and small casters on the “forward” end. Good for hard surfaces but suck when used in the horizontal position on rough terrain/dirt/grass etc. . Sometimes you need a cart more then a hand truck. Very nice products though. I like the transporter colaspable high lift ( gurney style ) cart for heavy loads into back of vehicles.

I went to a couple of Lowes stores around me where supposedly, the Toughbuilt boxes were in stock with aisle numbers and everything. Nothing at all! I stopped by the new Klein section and it was so lonely it gave me the creeps. I only saw a couple of Flex boxes. I don’t see how any of these companies can get ahead selling at Lowes. The inferiority to Home Depot is devastating! Very few contractors and workers go there on a daily basis. Maybe every other day, or to get something quick and it’s the only thing close by.

I’ve been generally impressed with a Toughbuilt’s stuff. (note, I work at Lowe’s so I get to mess around with them pretty often). Not all of their tools are hits obviously but they consistently are trying to innovate. Gotta respect that even when it flops. This lineup is really impressive. The price point are what I’d expect and the quality feels inline with the high tier boxes like Milwaukee and such.

The other big Lowe’s brand, FLEX, is still expanding their lineup and yet still is missing a lot of the stuff Toughbuilt is coming out with. I liked the FLEX boxes and the innovations they came out with but I can’t see anyone choosing FLEX over this new Toughbuilt lineup.
