My father sent me an email with the headline diy @ home depot, so of course I opened it right away. What I didn’t expect was for there to be a brief message that some guy in Los Angeles tried to cut his arms off inside a Home Depot store.
Yes, that’s right, an unidentified man tried to saw his arms off. News reports are saying that he made it down to the bone on both arms before passing out. An off-duty paramedic managed to stop the bleeding with rags and rope.
Right now the guy’s in surgery, and since he didn’t have any ID on him nobody knows who he is or why he tried to cut his arms off.

Wow, just wow.
Aside from emotional scarring off innocent bystanders, at least this guy only harmed himself and not others. Did you hear about yesterday’s incident where a man stabbed 14 people at a Texas college with an X-Acto knife? Yikes.

I have similar urges every time I’ve interacted with the customer ‘service’ group at my local Home Depot, so I can sympathize. Hope he gets the help he needs.

Well good luck having any demo tools out on the floor after this. I saw this earlier and wondered how the hell it happened the Home Depot’s near me only has drills as tools that are powered up, and most of the time the batteries are dead and none of the corded tools are plugged in either. I’m sure if the guy was that determined he could have found an outlet, and took a tool out of its packaging.
Stuart
He used hand saws.
The batteries bundled in cordless tool kits are typically charged to about 40%.
Jason
Oh, the news report I read made it sound like it was a power tool that was used to do the amputations.
Lenny
Arms as in plural? This person was clearly not thinking this through.
Stuart
Yep, both arms.
News outlets felt the need to identify one of the saws as a small drywall saw.
Steve
When will this disarming of Americans ever end?
Mike
Did he have a saw in each hand, simultaneously sawing the opposite arm?
DIY project difficulty: 5 out of 5.
Javier
Who needs arms anyways? They just get in the way. Maybe he wanted to upgrade to brushless arms.
Seriously, I wonder how he didnt pass out on the first arm and managed to cut the other one with a badly damaged arm. They got cameras all over home depot, maybe the vid will end up on youtube.
Stuart
Maybe he was on drugs? Either that or he was double-sawing as Mike wondered about.

Congress will shortly introduce a bill to outlaw handsaws.
Ryan
This guy was a true multi tasker, sawing both arms while simultaneously screwing himself in the process.

I think that this guy saw a potential for a law suit and a chance to make money, so he went for this. Think about it, all this guy would have to say is that he has some issues and that this was Home Depot’s fault for causing the injury as they had the tools there.
To me, this doesn’t make any rational sense, but with the right lawyer, suddenly this guy might spark a change. This is the world we live in today people, for better or worse.
Stuart
I don’t think so. People trying to scam corporations are often clever about staging accidents, and what this guy did to himself wasn’t clever, it was severe and near fatal.
Colin
I remember reading about some real disorder where people felt their limbs did not belong to them, and were consequently undesireable. These people don’t feel right until the offending limb is removed. I wonder if this guy had this condition…

25 to 30 years ago here in Phx we had a guy who went to a pawn shop. He was in the tool aisle looking at saws. He asked if a circular worked and they said sure, here plug it in. Sure enough it worked and he proceeded to put the blade thru his neck and killed himself. One of my coworkers at the time had a habit of browsing at the pawn shop and was right next to him.

Yikes, how terrible!

I sense a new opportunity for the attorney Glass. A $90 – $100 cartridge that ejects the handle of the hand saw upon blade contact with a weenie.
