I swore off pegboard for years, until learning about Wall Control’s 32″ x 16″ colored steel pegboard panels. These panels have pre-formed flanges that act as wall separators. So there’s no need to futz around with wood spacers and the such during installation.
Wall Control panels are also somewhat modular, as you can add as many panels next to each other as you wish. If you just want a single panel, that’s okay too, although they’re sold in packs of two.

These steel panels are easy to install, they are quite strong thanks to their 20-gauge steel construction, and they are available in a variety of colors. So they work well and look great. There is also a galvanized finish option.
Wall Control offers a couple of kits, but I opted to purchase panels and standard pegboard hooks separately. Right now my panels haven’t been put back up after I rearranged my workspace layout, but I hope to have them back up soon.
Pegboard strips that measure 3″ x 16″ are also available, but I find these to be of limited utility. I bought one such panel on impulse, but have yet to find a place to install it.
You can use standard 1/4″ pegboard hooks, or slotted ones such as the ones Wall Control offers separately and as part of their kits.

I completely agree- I do not like pegboard one bit. It gets chewed up and ratty pretty quickly, and just looks plain ugly most of the time. But, we have been using a similar, steel pegboard at work for a while now (a decade and a half, about) that is indestructible- the stuff takes a heck of a beating in the industrial setting and still looks new. It doesn’t hurt that we use an orange/blue color combo the looks pretty good, too. I have been setting up my “shop” recently and am looking for storage solutions- and the stuff we use at work (on our manufacturing floor) is not really available in the States (AJ Products)- so I am definitely going to look into these- thanks!

I did a lot of research on boards before deciding on Wall Control, and they really are the best. The “best” means that they are nice looking, easy to install, durable, use standard pegboard components (which generally suck IMO), AND locking wall control components (which use the slots). This system really is the cat’s meow. Accept no substitute. Am so glad I chose this system.

I own some Wall Control steel pegboards. If you like Pegboard, they are the best, IMHO.
They are really well made and their hooks are mostly top-notch. Unfortunately, they are very expensive and charge a lot of shipping. If they had more products on Amazon, I would own a lot more. I mounted the large sheets to the side of my Seville Classics Wire shelves (which I discovered from this site) and the narrow strips to the side of my workbench and router table.
I have mixed feelings about pegboard, but I definitely think they are the best of every maker I have seen. Their website charges too much for shipping, but that’s common with most places that aren’t Amazon or MLCS (or I guess the other large retailers).

I have something similar, strong, works well, and is aging far better than pegboard. One thing I will say, spring for the locking hooks. There is very little that aggravates me more than having the hook fall off when you grab a tool. The locking hooks prevent this, and help bring peace, joy, and harmony to my shop.
