Gearwrench 120XP Ratchet Giveaway

Have you heard about Gearwrench’s new 120XP ratchets? They’re pretty sweet. The ratchets feature dual pawl gearing – which you can see in our ratchet disassembly post – that give them 120 tooth-engagement positions for a super-narrow 3° swing arc.

To celebrate the launch of the new 120XP ratchets and socket sets, Gearwrench is giving us 10 ratchets to give away to ToolGuyd readers.

I’d like to try a better quality ratchet than what I have now. Sometime it seems like mine has about 24 teeth. I’m slowly starting to replace some of my older, cheaper tools with better ones. The old ones go to friends or second-hand stores so I don’t add to the clutter 🙂

After reading your post on Tool Guyd and the follow up on Garage Journal–even though my ratchet collection is over flowing—I purchased the 1/2″ drive 120XP from my favorite Gearwrench online retailer Tooltopia. At that time they were out of the sets and only had the 1/2″ drive. I work on trucks and trailers so 50% + of my work time I am using a 1/2″ drive. So far it is living up to some hard use and since my other 1/2″ ratchets are older lower gear tooth count from ‘ the tool trucks’ I am really impressed!

I have a few gearwrench tools, namely their ratcheting combo wrenches, and more recently, their swivel head flare nut wrenches. In the case of every Gearwrench tool I own, if you really look at it, there is a lot of thought that went into it. The flare nut wrenches, for example, have a bit of taper to the head, to better reach recesses fittings, while being thicker towards the back, for more ‘meat’ to the head, for greater strength. They actually grip fittings in awkward places, than my buddies’ Snap On flare nut wrenches. Their focus on quality, value, attention to detail, and innovation, put them up there as one of the best values out there, for quality affordable tools. It seems that anything cheaper, is not as good, and anything better, is notably pricier. If the rathcet handles are made as good as my combo wrenches, I sure would like one in my toolbox. I’d even be wiling to review it compared to my current ratchets.

I really like the fact that Gearwrench took an innovative approach to the gear teeth game… not just making gears with finer teeth, but doing something different!

one thing I really wish Gearwrench will plan for the future…. to apply the 120XP stuff to new innovative design ratchets of different lengths, flex heads, cushion grips, etc. I think the 120XP stuff kicks snap-on’s stuff, but snap-on has their ratchets in many different configurations that is really attractive. if Gearwrench can bring to market a bunch of different ratchet configurations using the 120XP, and at Gearwrench price points… some folks at Snap-On will be soooo very upset!!!!

I’ve been using Craftsman raised panels for years, and got a Gearwrench flex head cushion grip ratchet and am blown away by it (it’s the first fine toothed ratchet I’ve ever owned). I think its only a 60 tooth, but the difference is amazing from the old cman stuff I’ve been using. It’s saved me a bunch of times working in tight spaces. I’ve been eyeballing a couple of the gearwrench regular ratchets to replace my most used cmans, and will probably get some when I get a little spare cash saved up. Love ’em.

Now that I have thought that, I am very worried, please promise me that when I win my first GearWrench Ratchet that it will not eat me. I could use a decent ratchet like one of these to take the place of the hodge-podge mix of random ratchets in my toolbox that came from things found in my dad’s garage and rusty tools left in yards….. 1- Flex head ratchet spanners, always my go to spanner. Very good on old / classic cars cars where you can’t rely on being able to spin the nut off once broken loose.

2- Pick set, I wonder why I waited so long before buying one !

3- 3/8 long flex head ratchet. Great for putting some power to bust loose.

While I think 120 teeth is quite a lot and not that useful in most case, I would like to own one for those situations with limited clearance. Also, I would like to see now the stacked double paw design compares to the side-by-side double paw design of the Wright round head…

I have a GearWrench Vortex 13+20 mm (aka 1/4+3/8) full inch+metric set and it is definitely my go to set. After so many times that I could not close a nut because the screw was too long, and I didn’t have a long socket for the size, I decided that the hollow sockets are the way to go. I couldn’t be happier with the decision.
The only thing missing from the Vortex set is a way to work in angles, such as a universal joint or a flexible extension. This is why I need a good 3/8″ standard ratchet – so why not improve fine tooth access along the way with the GW 120Xp?

I have two sets of the GearWrench Flex combo wrenches that I really enjoy. The flex allows access to places that normally makes you want to break your forearm just to have an extra joint to get in there.

The 120 tooth would replace my go-to ratchet, the Harbor Freight composite. While I love the composite due to the fine teeth, I don’t always care for the shape and NOTHING beats the feel of chrome.

After buying bunch of GW tools such as flex ratcheting wrench metric set, SAW ratcheting wrench set, double box indexing set, roto-ratchet set, I would love to get my hands on the 120XP ratchet. I would like to compare it with the Triangle 120 teeth ratchet. Triangle is good but for every day work, I find it quite heavy and not as ergonomic as my other ratchets.

Long time surfer, first time poster.

Just bought my first house and one requirement: *must have garage*. I am the type who likes to get his hands dirty i.e. changing anything from oil to a transmission. Bought a 44 inch 22 drawer tool chest and being fresh out of college, I need tools to fill it.

I did pickup the Flexhead ratcheting 7-piece sets you have had previously listed in deals (SAE and metric both) and have been satisfied with GW.

90% of the tools I have bought since August have been because of Stuart and Toolguyd’s recommendations and deal postings. Even if I am no chosen for this wrench, just wanted to let you know to keep up the good work.

I’d like the ratchet because all my current ratchets (including the older Snap Ons) are low tooth count.

I work on a lot of different items in my shop. But mostly it’s old machine rebuilds and hot rods.

I’ve got Gearwrench reversible ratchet wrenches in metric and sae, x-beams and stubby sets of both as well.

I’d love the opportunity to own this ratchet and I’d be sure to post up a review with pics included for toolguyd.

    Thanks Stuey and GearWrench!

I reviewed some of the first Gear Wrenches available for Mopar Muscle Magazine when they were first released–both the standard length, and later the stubbies.
You know how long the original Gear Wrenches have been around! I have used, and abused, them regularly ever since–they replaced my Craftsman Professional wrenches in my tool box, and have been used working on vintage cars ever since.
I wouldn’t be without them, for any reason. Ever.
I have never used any Gear Wrench products other than the ratcheting wrenches–I’d be very interested in seeing how this new ratchet compares to my Snap-on and Craftsman Professional ratchets, including my fine-tooth models from each company.

I don’t own any Gearwrench tools. In fact about 90% of the tools I own are old Craftsman that I inherited from my Grandfather, whom I never saw do any sort of mechanical work in my lifetime. Based on what I’ve seen on the internet, they’re between 50 and 60 years old. I’ve kept them in good working order with maintenance and care, but as the work I’m doing in my garage intensifies (moving from motorcycles and tiny little engines to cars with much bigger powerplants) it might be time to enter the modern world of tools. My budget doesn’t really allow for the more premium brands like you might find in a professional shop- I just want an honest tool at an honest price that will last me as long as my Grandfather’s tools have lasted. Perhaps Gearwrench is the answer.

I love the design of these 120xp ratchets. I’m still stuck with the 36t ratchet and have been holding off on buying a fine tooth ratchet, so this would be perfect timing. With the tight spaces of my Mach 1 that I’m restoring, this fine tooth ratchet could (and will) come in handy in many instances!

Some feedback to Gearwrench may be for them to look into possibly producing a composite ratchet, something besides all steel/chrome. This makes the ratchet lighter in weight, which can be beneficial on the larger ratchets like 1/2″ drive.

Just returned from Advanced Auto Parts. The service was very good, friendly and helpful.

I returned one GearWrench 13mm ratcheting wrench (stopped ratcheting) and one GearWrench 14mm reversible ratcheting wrench (switch fell-off) for warrantee. Advance replaced the 13mm but did not have any reversible ratcheting wrenches in stock. They offered a choice between accepting a 14mm standard ratcheting wrench or personally shipping the reversible ratcheting wrench to GearWrench at my expense. I accepted the standard as substitute for the reversible. I did not purchase the wrenches from Advanced.
Although they did replace the broken wrenches, the staff instructed that Advanced Auto’s GearWrench warranty policy is to only replace broken/defective items purchased directly from Advanced Auto within 1-yr of purchase. The warrantee is good for use once per tool. If the replacement items are also broken/defective, Advanced Auto will not warrantee. Those items would need to be shipped to GearWrench at the customer’s expense.

The end of story is I have two new wrenches which is cool enough. Kudos to Advanced for their customer service.

Gearwrench has become my go to wrench for several years. As my right hand becomes more crippled from my accident (scar tissue buildup), I have bought first the flex heads and then the x beam ratcheting wrenches. The added flexibility of using these wrenches overcomes the “fumble fingers” and I am almost as productive now as before.
I have been curious to see if a high count toothed ratchet would aid me the same way the wrenches have, but the big name brands 80 tooth and up ratchets have been outside my budget.
I will certainly give updates if chosen to receive one of these new ratchets from Gearwrench.

I would love to try out the new 120xp ratchet as I’ve used my tools constantly since I was about 11 or 12. I am currently in Automotive Technical School, and use my tools almost everyday and plan to make my living with my tools. Coincidentally my 3/8 ratchet being my most used tool by far, and ratchets in general are my favorite tool, again by a wide margin. What was surprising to me was that it seems like no student at my school loves tools as much as I do. And even more surprising was only 1 instructor seemed to share my love of tools. I introduced him to one of my favorite websites “GarageJournal.” My school is partnered with Snap On so I would definitely like to bring such a high toothed, quality ratchet to school and put it up against Snap on and see what its made of as well as introduce Gearwrench to other fellow future technicians. I do not own any Gearwrench products so I think I would be an even more ideal candidate.

I’m a working tech and around the shop everyone has at least one set of Gearwrenches. We depend on these and I have yet to see them let anyone down. I personally just bought a pass-thru 1/2″ drive set that has worked superbly at doing alignments, especially on Euro cars that can get tight in some spots.

I have gone through at least twenty-five wrenches in the past 10 years. I don’t misstreat my tools but I also haven’t gone out and bought expensive ones either. I am always looking for a good tool and from what I have read this one has completely caught my eye. I am not a collector but do still have every tool that my Father gave me. He was a master mechanic his whole life and would have been 88 this coming Jan. Yes, he had an amazing collection of “classic” tools that are now mine. Hence the attraction to tools for me. I look forward to handing the Gearwrench off to my Sons.

I have a GW 1/4″ ratchet from last year’s Secret Santa that I really like. I have numerous other GW pliers, screwdrivers, sockets and ratcheting wrenches. All good stuff and would love to add this ratchet to the arsenal!

I like and appreciate that GearWrench is available from various sources and not a single location or truck. I am able to go to my local and nearest parts store and grab a quality GearWrench tool. I have yet to have my hands on a GearWrench ratchet, but I (and my father, whom is a Auto Shop owner) would love to try one on our many projects around the house and shop. I would truly appreciate the opportunity to compare this ratchet to others that I have been using.

The first GearWrench tools I bought was a set of ratcheting wrenches that I bought about 8 years ago. They endured a great deal of use and abuse over the years and are still working great. I purchased two additional sets last year. I wish I could add this 120XP ratchet to my collection.

I’ve got the GearDriver ratcheting nut driver set in SAE & Metric. I also got the T-handle for it and I use it all the time working on small 2-cycle & 4-cycle engines. I love it!

I have a fair amount of Gearwrench stuff, most of it seems to be very good quality for the price.

I would love to check out the 120xp to see if it is worth upgrading all of my other ratchets to.

Add a set of ratchet wrenches to my collection recently and found them to be a “go to” wrench. Would love to have this new ratchet and suspect it would immediately become my “go to” choice. Found gear wrench products to deliver excellent value.

I’ve been using the Vortex pass-thru ratchet and socket since they first came out. I bought a 71 piece metric/sae set at a NAPA store and thought they would be a nice household set ,for the wife and kids, basically a novelty item. I own and operate a fleet of triaxle dump trucks and 8 pieces of heavy equipment,so I knew they would never hold up like my “real” tools for the tough jobs. Well, its been more years than I care to think about, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. That original set found it’s way into my shopand I became a believer. It and many other gear ratchet products purchased since have become my weapons of choice-no matter what job on which machine I’m going to tackle. In several cases they have literally made impossible jobs very doable and they always make servicing my fleet more comfortable and quicker. If this new addition is anything like the rest..I gotta have it.

I love the Gearwrench wrenches I own, although I’m careful not to put too much torque on them. I have been hearing about the 120XP from lots of people…all good things. I would love to replace my old Thorsen ratchet with a new Gearwrench 120 XP!

We do a lot of specialty mechanical work for racers of all kinds and a wrench we can use to remotelyaccess nuts and bolts easily in crowded spots by one tech is a real time saver. beyond measure. We have a couple of specially designed tools we use and one of the rotating shaft types but they are 2 tech operations, not our favorite.. We’re looking forward to seeing one of these.

Love the GearWrench PassThrus. It’s acutally a money saver, I have just 3/8 drive passthrus and I don’t need anymore. The adapter hardly adds bulk. The best part, is if I need it as a passthru wrench it’s still an option! My flex head, ratchet wrenches are outstanding too. The GearWrench line jsut feels like the fit and finish is more polished and controllable. I’ve never tried the cushion grip but I’d love to, but first I want to enjoy the benefits of a 120!!!

I’m in the tool manufacturing business, and I have been using the 120XP series as the quintessential example of a great tool made even better. We focus on specialty tools which haven’t been brought to market before, which is an interesting niche. The 120XP on the other hand is a ratchet, many manufacturers make them, and everybody already owns a few various makes (myself included). However, the engineering, design, and marketing behind the 120XP are just so great you can’t help but want one.

In my case I find Gearwrench Tools to be the better bang for the buck purchases. Have been buying their products since 2007 and have yet to be disappointed. I didn’t have warranty problems thus far. Since I’m in the Philippines I had to send back the tools to the USA for exchange and so far only for a 19mm flex head wrench. 🙂

These look like a promising ratchet. I have been using the 84tooth craftsman premiums with success, but these seem like a good option for a fine tooth ratchet. I recently picked up the flex combo ratcheting wrenches, which are a little less quality to what I had used in the passed, a step in the wron direction, but these Ratchets seem like a step in the right direction. I have been eyeing their ratcheting tap and die set for a while.

Most of my tools are craftsman except for two sets of Gearwrench wrenches. I remember when I first got them being impressed with how well they worked and how much easier it was. I’ve been shopping for better ratchets, and have been looking at the Williams stuff, but if the Gearwrench ratchets are that good, I’ll just buy those and be happy.

I currently own Gearwrench combination wrenches in both SAE and Metric. I like the reversible versions best (I own both reversible and non) I also have the flex heads and the stubbies. I use them all pretty frequently and don’t know how I lived without ratcheting wrenches for so long! I would not be without them now. Thanks.

I just started revamping my tools and ran across some gearwrench tools that my father had. They seem to work great and feel great – I just started collecting all of the Ratcheting wrenches and I have compared them side to side with the Craftsman and found that these are well worth the money. I just purshased the Gear Wrench Standard Reversable for $39.99 through Sears. For the money there is no comparison. My next investment are all three of the 120XP Rathets. Hopefully I will need to only buy two.

I’d like to win because I have never even heard of your brand until right this minute. If they are good, I’ll be glad to let the public know. If they are not? Well, I’ll be glad to let the public know that too. I work with tools every day & I need not good but GREAT tools. I’ll yell it from the top of the fire tower what ever the kind of tool it is good or baaaaad.

I don’t know much about hand tools but I have been reading and watching youtube to get familiarized with different tools and brand. My neighbor gave me a toolbox with some basic tools to work on my car. He also gave me lessons here and there on how to maintain my car. I think I am hook… I actually love getting my hands dirty!! I enjoy maintaining my car myself instead of taking my car to the mechanics.

I am now in the market of new set of tools. A lot of people have commented very positive feedback with GearWrench – it last a long time, excellent quality, easy to work with, and it stands out. There are plenty of very popular tools and I am sure some measured up with GearWrench. But why GearWrench? For the affordability, quality of workmanship and a well known brand in the industry, I do not need to look any further. I will be collecting GearWrench as my standard tools.
