Porter Cable PCL180CDK-2 Cordless Drill Driver

We put Porter Cable’s new 18V lithium-ion drill driver through a few grueling tests and then into the hands of a contractor. We’re still putting the finishing touches on our review, but thus far it looks like the drill earns high marks across the board.

Porter Cable: We’re really proud of our upgraded 18V li-ion drill/driver!

ToolGuyd: I can see why – we’re definitely liking its ergonomics and performance.

I recently purchased the Porter Cable table saw PCB220TS from Lowes and it is an excellent saw that is very accurate and portable. The dovetail jig is on my wishlist.

I’m quite happy with my Hitachi drill and driver, but my wife tends to work alongside of me (I know, she’s a rare one) and we are constantly needing to share it back and forth (well, not so much since I added an Impact driver to the collection – now we mostly fight over THAT). If I win, it will be hers! I’d then need to go out and buy the PCC520B – the close quarters drill – or wait until they make a right angle impact driver to make additional use out of the batteries.

I’ve seen nothing but excellent reviews on the PC products, especially the new ones, but I went with Hitachi because I had an old Hitachi 14v NiCad drill that was still going strong and Costco had quite a deal on an entire assortment of the Hitachi tools (brand loyalty and price). I can’t think of a PC tool that has not been adequately reviewed elsewhere, so I can’t offer suggestions there.

As for the catalog of tools, hands down my favorite is the 7424XP random orbit polisher. This polisher is considered a must-have in the automotive detailing world, and is a class-setter. Great tool!

@Rocky – yep, I know what you mean. I have quite a few tools that I bought that fit this bill – for me it was cheaping out on pliers, cutters, and screwdrivers. Once I picked up my first Klein’s and Knipex, I was sold. I’ve been slowly replacing the craptastic ones with ones that actually work. Quality tools make everything go smoother. I do have several Harbor Freight items that work for me – you have to be careful, treat them right, and pay attention to overdoing it on the duty cycle (watch for overheating on the power tools). For precision jobs, hand tools, and long duty cycle power tools – where accurate machining and hardness is key – that is where you spend the money.

Another PC tool that I am interested in is their 18v Hammer Drill, I would love to see you guys review it and see how it stacks up to the pro-grade offerings from Dewalt, Milwaukee, or Makita.

I have a DeWalt 18 volt drill that lost high range, it only makes grinding noises on high now, and sometimes it pops out of low if I don’t have a finger on the gear selector, to hold it into low.
I hope that is a good enough reason.

I really like the looks of the P-C job site table saw. If I get a project big enough to justify one, or find a screaming deal, I think that may be my next tool purchase, once I replace the 18 volt drill. I figure I can get by in low, or use my plug in one until I win this contest (or find out I didn’t).

I really love my PC router. It will basically mount to anything. I think I’m spoiled, from bits to mount plates to bearing kits it feels like they’re the only one in the industry that really ‘sticks’ to their family of designs.

I like my PC 4.5″ electric angle grinder quite a bit more than any other I’ve used, air or electric. Not much to say other than it has taken everything I throw at it and still runs like new.

The drill would really be an upgrade for my dad & I, probably the weak point in our tools is the fact we only have an older 12v cordless & an older B&D corded 3/8″ drill from the late 70’s.

    Good luck to everyone.

It would be great to win this drill– my current go-to 18v (let’s just say that it has a lot of yellow plastic) is starting to come apart and the battery just can’t keep up with me. Time for a replacement, and I’ve been thinking about Porter Cable as a good choice.

For the extra bonus entry, I want to answer a couple of the questions, if that’s okay. First off– my best-ever-favorite-favorite Porter-Cable tool is actually no longer in their catalog: the FCN 200 Flooring Nailer. It never let me down… unfortunately it was very attractive to a thief who nabbed it from a jobsite. I missed a chance to grab a replacement on clearance from Home Depot a couple of months ago and still regret not jumping on that deal faster. My second favorite PC tool is my Palm Nailer, which surprised me with its versatility on the first day and made me wish I’d bought one sooner. Next, my wishlist: I need a new power (hand) planer and really want to check out the Power Paint Remover. If ToolGuyd has an “in” with PC and wants a third-party review, I’m your man for the job!

Finally, a comment in the hopes that PC reps are actually reading this: your Model 314 Trim Saw is a very good tool, but I’d like it to be great. Charge $10 or $20 more if you have to, but put a better shoe plate on the bottom, PLEASE!

I need a new PC drill because my current drill is a piece of crap. I had to run out and buy a replacement drill when I dropped my PC off a ladder and killed it. The store did not have PC and I was in a rush so I made a bad choice and bought another brand. My favorite PC tool is my ancient 6902 router. I have been making cabinets and furniture for longer than I care to remember and my router not only still works like new, it looks relatively new too. The only repair it ever needed was a new power cord when I accidentally ran over the cord with the job box and cut it.

I’d like to win this set because I don’t own ANY cordless tools at all. I had a cordless drill years ago and found that it was lacking in power. When the batteries finally died, I never found it really worthwhile to spend the money to get it working again, so I got rid of it entirely. I’ve been using my corded drills that are just about as old as I am and they still work great. Lots of torque and when I pull one out of its case, I know for sure it’s going to be me that calls it a day and not the drill. But I’d sure like to try the newer cordless tools to see if they’ve actually gotten much better or if I’m still just better off just staying with my good corded drills that never let me down.

I am planning to replace this with a newer technology, definitely Li-Ion, and the PCL180CDK-2 is the drill of choice.

My corded drill is a PC650HD. It rocks, but it packs more power than I am brave enough to use on most jobs.

There was a time when anything from certain manufacturers was generally good stuff. Some of them however, Porter Cable being one, have divided themselves into two categories. One category is the high end “professonal” tools that they’ve always been known for. The other is the lower entry level that are intended more for occasional users.

If you’re willing to spend the money on their higher end, that’s generally what you get. You can no longer arbitrarily assume however, that it’s all great by sheer virtue of the fact that is says Porter Cable.

What a cool give away! Everyone can use a cordless drill, including me. Thanks so much for all your reviews.

I’ve used Porter cable tool previously and never been disappointed.
as my current cordless drill is dead, this would be a great addition to my tool box.
thanks for the opportunity to support my tool obsession!

I would like to win because the current cordless drill I use is the spawn of Satan and
has a dead battery every time I need it.

I’d love to have the longevity and strength of the 18v lithium ion batteries, and to minimize battery changes.

My favorite current Porter Cable is my 7424xp buffer, works great for maintaining paint on vehicles.

I’d love to own the PC 18v detail sander for finish work on my woodworking projects.

This is a beautiful drill. My current drill is a Porter Cable that I bought in the year 2000. It’s been a diehard and I’d expect no less from another Porter Cable product.

If my dad was alive, I think he’d be amazed at my interest in tools and my crafty ability in how I use them (by myself!) for house and craft projects. He was a fellow “tool guy”, my uncle was a carpenter, and although I’m a chick, looks like I inherited the tool bug! I don’t have any Porter Cable products, only cheap corded stuff I find at rummages etc. I’d be honored to have a quality tool to use!
